1992 Firebird 3.1L tpi to 5.7L carb want tpi

I have a carbed 350 out of an IROC-Z and I'm going to rebuild this engine over the next couple of months and then drop it and the matching transmission in when I have available time. It's daily driver(rarely driven over 25 miles a day though), and I heard carbed engines aren't as good as tpi for a daily driver. Would I be able to convert the block back to tpi without major problems? I am aware of the modifications I have to do to the car for the 3.1L to the 5.7L. I'm just wondering if I could swap out the carb parts of the block to tpi parts, or should I just stick with the carbed engine and rid the tpi system? I'm not familiar with carbed engines.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

The factory never put a carb'd 350 in 3rd gen f-bodies. So, either the engine was converted to carb, or the 350 was swapped under a carb. Which was it? What year is the IROC it came out of?

Now, the block doesn't have anything to do with TPI. It's the heads, and even then, probably still doesn't make a difference whether or not TPI can be put on it. The most important compatibility issue is with the cam - everything else can be worked around. Get the casting #'s from the heads, and we'll go from there.

Do you already have the TPI system?

For what it's worth, carb is a fine daily driver when properly set up and tuned. I drove my '82 daily with a carb from Aug '99 to July '10. Daily, as in year-round. In Colorado.

Before I answer, I talked to more people and I have decided to keep the engine carbureted. I was misguided about carbureted engines.

I'm not sure if the engine was converted or swapped into the IROC. I'm pretty sure it was an '88 or '89 Camaro. I can call the guy to make sure.

I do already have the TPI system in my car. I won't be doing the whole swap anytime soon though(I'm thinking around spring or summer of next year). On my free time, I'm going to rebuild the engine and probably the transmission too. By the looks of the engine, I'm expecting to replace a lot.
