So i was presented with the opprotunity to get a 350 from a '95 GMC Suburban to put in my '88 IROC-Z. But i was told by my mechanic uncle that GMC's turn opposite Chevy's. One turns clockwise while the other turns counter-clockwise. I tried to look it up on google, but all i came up with was truck comparisons that do me no justice in finding out how the motors turn. Does anybody have any input? I'd be putting a carb on it rather than FI. I prefer it old school.

im quite sure thats BS, Chevy was generalized in 77-78 or something like that. by generalized i mean pontiac, gmc and all other GM made brands no longer made engines, chevy became the GM standard. GMC didnt have their own engine in 95.

Maybe he was getting confused with marine SBC engines where if 2 are fitted one is run reverse rotation so the props balance each other out?

The motors in GMC trucks are absolutely identical in every way to the ones in Chevrolet trucks.

Nod approvingly like a wise old graybeard when your uncle says that; mumble something deprecating about "gummint motors" or whatever other catchphrase he applies himself to such situations; thank him kindly for his input and willingness to help; then ignore every word he says.

They would never do something like that imo because it would needlessly increase costs through the entire drive train, which would be compounded further from production to inventory. They had already switched over to using the same engine and drive train between makes (Ie. Pontiac vs. Chevy) in the early 1980's to reduce costs.

Could possibly have gotten it confused with the water pump for a serpentine set-up vs. the older style belts for the accessories, but your '88 would also have a serp iirc.

Here are a couple of links that may help you learn about different engines. They are identified by a three digit code, and you can see where the same engines are used by both Chevy and GMC.

Ok so that's settled. Next question: would the cam and lifters out of an older 283 SBC (I'll post block casting numbers tomorrow)work in the '95 350?

Depends on your definition of "work".

Beyond that, there would be the question of whether that would be A Good Idea or not; which would depend on what cam and lifters they are, whether they've ever been run, and stuff like that.

Edlbrock Torker II cam and lifter kit, never used. Not sure of any details more than that honestly. My dad bought it for the 283 when we built it, but when i went to pull it our not long ago, he said the motor was no good. Something about the heads. So our plan was to use what we could off the 283 in the 350 im getting

You'd be better off to leave the stock one in, that put that in there.

If you REALLY want a better cam, get one that's been designed some time in the last 40 years or so, instead.

That's what we figured. Got the block casting numbers for the 283. 3834812. Looking it up came to '62-'63 2 bolt main 283 for car and truck
