Headers

Guys,

I have found a pair of Flowtech headers which are within my budget AND will fit on my car. I have also convinced the wife that I "need" these headers, for reasons of safety and the like. The problem is, I am stuck with the Y-pipe. I have found a place which will fabricate one, but the price seems to be more than the headers. I'm sure there are many places which could make one from scratch, but surely there is someone out there who has a pattern for one? It seems like a lot of work, because I would have to drive the car to get it to the exhaust place, but the headers would have to be fitted to enable them to make me a Y-pipe, and I DON'T fancy driving with open headers...

Any suggestions? I'm in the process of checking the usual places. Dave Eady is trying his best, and a couple of places are getting back to me. Anyone have the magical answer for me?

Thanks,
Si

You know what, stuff it. I'm ordering the Headman headers and Y-pipe kit tomorrow. Sorry to have wasted anyone's time!

Hi Si.
Where have you ordered these from? How much?

I am going to have to fabricate (or have fabricated) a stainless Y pipe to suit my chromed headman headers. Either that or have a new y pipe chrome plated!!

Andy.

PS Good move persuading the Wife there! Please pass on a few tips to the rest of us.

I have ordered the set from Ultimate Spares of America. £250-odd for the lot, and before anyone says there are cheaper ways....I am done with the hassle of getting one place's spares to mate to another place's spares. I'll pay that little bit more to make the job bearable.
I had a quote from Pipecraft (back of Classic American) for £120 to fab a Y-pipe, but by the time I'd figured out a way of getting a header-equipped car to Essex from Nottingham, I'd already ordered the kit.

And the persuasion bit? Simple. Pick a wife who doesn't know a Headman Header from a Header Tank!
"What are headers?"
"Oh, they are fundamental in removing toxic gasses from the engine quicker and more efficiently than a manifold, so there's less chance of Carbon Monoxide poisoning"

Sorted.

Hi Si,
I've got the headman 1"5/8 headers with y-pipe.For that price thats quite good. The only thing with them is that the header collectors are 3" but the single tube on the y-pipe is something like 2 1/2"!!! I might modify mine to 3".They are a good value for money set-up and are a huge improvement on the dog**** standard stuff.Try the car with open headers though mate, they sound awesome.A friend of mine drove a Chevy powered Granada from Gloucester to Santa pod(100 odd miles) on open headers and never got pulled! As far as the wife goes I've got loads of copies of carcraft and talk about Chevy stuff to mates all the time, she has got half an idea about what I'm talking about.

The main reason I took the plunge and ordered is because I snapped a stud on the manifold-downpipe on one side, and she now blows like a steam train. The cost of standard stuff is not going to be much off the cost of the headers, so there was really no excuse.
I'm not too phased about the different sizes of pipe and collector, because as you say they will be a huge improvement on the stock equipment. Having said that, I now have the kit and could quite easily take the Y-pipe to a cheap pipe bender and have a 3" one made.

I must resist.

Baby to think of.

Let's face it, I'm running with an LG4. Aside from a cam, the next performance step will be a 350, and maybe while it's all in bits I'll modify the exhaust. Maybe.....

And PM....let me know how those headers work out for you. What was the shipping like, if you don't mind me asking?

Well although I've had the headers for two weeks, and had them on the car for one week, they were technically a birthday present. And today is my birthday! So here they are :

Always remember to remove the dipstick tube before installation. I had to remove mine DURING installation....with a pair of bolt croppers and a hacksaw

As you can see, my next task is to clean everything up and reroute all the cables and pipes. It's only an LG4, and the likes of powermite and ZZ42fast have no fears from my old girl, but I'm still proud of her!
