The Great British Garage.....

Well, we are going to move house.... Wife has made the decision so for ease of life I am going along with it. At the moment we have the luxury in Bicester of a nice double garage. I made the statement that I would only move if the IROC had a home too. Well the house in Dunchurch, Nr Rugby Warwks also has a double garage but is 16 ft 3" long. Will it be enough for my baby? How long is an IROC? Doesn't it pee you off that the garages in this country are so small! Cars have grown in size so much in the last decade that pretty soon they will just be made into woman space as the 'car won't fit in'

Thanks guys, mildly panicked as we have an offer on our house

It'll fit just don't know how you'd get it in....

Camaro's are 16' long for irocs & 15' 8" for berlinetta etc. I got these numbers from the 1985 brochure on www.iroc-z.com

Garages seem to be very thin on the ground these days. I cannot get a garage in my part of town for anything reasonable, and the only garage I've seen up for sale looked as if it would be tight for a mini....

I think the only solution is to buy a house that has space for a garage to be built, and get it fully custom built to fit real cars! Now if only I had a spare million.....

Good luck with the new place,

Si. :lala:

Thanks for the info si. If worse comes to worse, at least the front cone is deformable plastic LOL. Sounds like its going to be cosey in there

There is space to the side for potentially a double length garage. The beauty is that I can convince my wife with her own tactics (if we ever have the cash)- it would make a great 2nd reception room LOL

Cheers

Why don't you ask the owners of the house you're interested in if you could try the garage out for size?

Just remember to watch for the door mechanisms the first time you are trying it, and make sure the angle of descent of the door isn't going to catch the hood.

You might be able to park it in at an angle? Worth a try.

How did you get on with the rear defrost repair recently?

Best of luck with things!

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for the best wishes guys!! Problem is that the IROC isn't taxed, so getting her there is a problem for a start. I would ideally like to check it first hand but it isn't possible... An angle may be the only way around it... I wonder if there is a specialist door that juts out to allow a little more space?

The rear defosted is on the back burner as things with the little one have been hectic. Couple that with a change in career and an iminent house move... you get the idea. Still got my wheel colour debate going on as well LOL

Hope all is good with you mate.

Felix

Bane of my life at the moment my garage or lack of one!Got virtually all of the building materials for next to nothing(ebay addict) for a huge double garage.Got the plans drawn up and then the bastards at the planning office turn it down!!!Still got a long way to go to get the car finished and I'm sick of trying to do it outdoors.Still, now got somebody in the know who can "persuade" the planning office, corruption's a useful tool.Good luck with your garage quest.

how does it compare in length to a 1990 XJ6?

When dad had his old 90 XJ6 it fitted into our single garage, with 1/2 inch on each mirror to spare, and in termas of length, you had to push the car against the wall at the end, so the door would shut. there was a 1/2 inch gap behind the car.

yup, it was tight.

I'm pretty sure the XJ6 was almost exactly the same width, an i seem to recall about an inch longer than a Camaro.

Just measured mine and its 17'-6" x 8'-6" wide. When the TA is in there, there is just enough room to squeeze along between the nose and the garage door.As far as width,if i keep it close on the passenger side,I can open the drivers door wide enough to get in and out quite easily. If the roofs are off it makes it even easier

cheers

Arrggghhh!!! PM if your garage door was 13" inbefore that still makes it 16 ft 5"? That is still bigger. Was it a conventional up-and-over job? Damn that is bad news.

I'm still holding out on Phil's Jag story though....

Maybe I could just take chunks out of the brick end wall until she fits... or just park it in the lounge?

Eric good luck man, would they reconsider if you didn't make it the size of a BA hanger?

Cheers guys

BA hanger mmm should be big enough heh heh.Seriously though it needs to be a good size because the car will need to be sprayed in their as well as have enough room for storage and a big workbench. Will have to keep up the pressure on the Gestapo!

So this is the house you move into in 2 weeks time then? Does the car fit in the garage, or is this still to be determined?

Unlike the sensible Scots, the house buying procedure down here is awful. So becuase of this everything has just been delayed and delayed. Latest according to the solicitors yesterday is that we may complete on the 24th May... Trying to pack a house with 2 young kids, 2 cats etc.. is not easy.

Fingers crossed!

Would love to have a garage.
My poor car has to sit on the road. A one way street used as a rat run. About 2 months after getting it someone hit the wing mirror which of course doesn't fold so it pulled the door skin. Now it always goes on the kerb so it's tucked further in.

mine is now garaged as well, it is about 1 inch smaller in each direction than an XJ6, so its goes in ok, as long as your carefull.

i find its best to leave the drivers window down to aid getting in and out, and throw a dust sheet over the car.
