Hi Surgeon,
I'm afraid injection is above me at the moment(dirty old carb until the 400ci turbo motor comes together)but you could ask the same question on the TECH/GENERAL ENGINE board. One of the things that board deals with is not starting.By the way what a lucky bugger living so close to the Pod.

Welcome aboard!

I trust you tried the usual stuff, like checking for a spark, and anything blocking the flow of air to the intake? I would be more inclined to say ignition, since you say it doesn't fire, which I presume to mean it cranks with absolutely no firing at all. If there was a spark AND fuel in the chamber, there would at least be a stumble.

Si

Since the engine service light comes on and stays on, it should have a trouble code stored in the computer. Have you tried pulling those codes yet, if so, what are they?

thx for the replies people

ok dont mean to be sarcastic to no one, this is the chain of events

1key in ignition dash lights up ,get the buzzer sound if u know what i mean

2.engine turns,no fire up then the smell of fuel, like flooded

3but engine check light never goes out

im hoping that it flooded and then try again tomorrow i will let you know what happens ? sorry to sound negative but ive had the car 3 years and have spent a fortune getting the body work done ,total respray, tinted glass, torque thrust 2 wheels, just to drive it to the M..O.T station to get it to pass (more money)
then go in home for a drink to come back and it wont start

thx everyone its much appreciated:hail:

No sarcasm taken, can understand the frustration. It would help if you could pull the trouble code from the computer, this would give us an idea of what could be possibly causing your problem. Are you familar with how to pull the trouble codes from the computer? Also, don't keep clearing the codes by disconnecting the battery, that will not solve your problem and since you have not listed any codes, it makes diagnosing your problem a little hard.

no im not familiar with pulling the codes but would be willing to learn, but the thing i dont understand is why after re-setting the ecm it wont fire up?as in all codes have been cleared,so it starts afresh if u know what im saying

and correct me if im wrong the ecm checks the whole system prior to fireing?

Ok Surgeon,

I have gone back and re-read through this entire post and I mis-read some of it and apologize for that. Your service engine light will come on when the key is turned to the "ON" position and will remain illuminated until the engine starts. The ECM won't check the entire system prior to firing. It will check the VATS system for the correct signal prior to enabling the starter enable relay and the fuel injectors. This system does not appear to be your problem at the moment. What size engine do you have in your car? Enclosed is a picture of the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) that is used to get trouble codes from the computer. You can use a paper clip to jumper pin "A" & "B" to read the codes. when you do this, the fan will come on which is normal. The first code is 12, the light will go "FLASH...FLASH FLASH" three times and if there are no other codes it will repeat this until the jumper is pulled. Code 12 is a normal code and means there is no pulse from the distributor. After code 12 flashes and other codes are present, they will then flash 3 times: example; code 32 will be "FLASH FLASH FLASH...FLASH FLASH"

Doc,

If you've disconnected battery power from the ECM, all error codes will have been erased, so your scan may not reveal much. Additionally, the SES light will not turn off until the engine is running, therefore, your light is acting normally.

You need to determine if you have strong spark at the plugs. Simply checking at the distributor will not eliminate all possible problems. Another thing to remember is that plugs that are soaked with fuel will not spark at all. The spark energy will be shunted (conducted to ground) through the saturated insulator. If your plugs are fuel fouled, remove and dry them, or replace them. You would need to dry them thoroughly, preferrably by heating, to drive all the fuel out of the insulators.

Once you have clean and dry spark plugs, crank the engine briefly to expel any accumulated fuel in the cylinders, then install the plugs and try again.
