A different way to buy parts

I know we've got the "useful vendors to Europe" thread but I have a different idea for getting parts.
If anyone needs stuff for their car then they should let everyone know what they want in this thread.Everyone can then chip in with the best deal they have found and post the price. If no-one is in a major hurry for the stuff, then I see this as a good way of getting a good deal.I have found tons of vendors giving stuff away tucked away in the vaults of Ebay etc.I've seen this in threads on the other side of the pond and the difference in price is a fair bit,Imagine what it's like here.I just want everybody to get a fair deal on stuff, even if it means buying everything direct from the US.I have no allegiance to UK vendors anymore, when the dollar/pound exchange rate goes up,do they pass on the discount,do they ****.

BTW.Does anyone know where I can get 8 cans of Strongbow Super for less than £5.68!

front and rear shox

Right, I'm first then.
Any good suppliers for front and rear shox? Nothing special, just normal, common or garden dampers. I'm going to a place in Doncaster tomorrow to pick up some parts so I will get a price from there and post it here.

Thanks
Andy.

Hi Andy,
I know these are a bit more special than standard stuff, but £64 for all 4 corners seems very reasonable, obviously shipping is extra.Check this out: Ebay Item number: 7922520613.

Thanks eric.
I have sent an e mail to the sellers for a shipping cost.

I am going to find some parts costs for some common items tomorrow and post them up.

We need to rack out brains a bit more. There must be a better method to ship parts over the pond. The last time I sent anything to a member in the UK, it was almost a week for a relatively small parcel. I would presume that the current exchange would make parts purchases in the US fairly attractive if the shipping and customs weren't such a costly P.I.T.Arse. Availability and the subsequent sompettition keeps prices fairly low here. Too bad you people have such difficulty getting the same kind of pricing. If there were only a sympathetic importer there...

How many people are inclined to get parts from the U.S.? It doesn't have to be third gen specific. I have an in with a couple of container shippers, and I could probably get it all together and shipped out. The hitch is the smallest unit is a 20' container. It would need to be filled up a good bit to make it worth while. I would also need someone on the other end inclined to receive the container.

Vader you are quite right. Her Majesty has it covered and must have hired in more customs officers to cope. How dare us have access to some good value

The only thing the Government over here is good at is taxes and customs.

I recently bought a EGR pipe from Florida. $60 plus $40 shipping! It worked out about £70 once here compared to the quotes in excess of £100+ VAT in the UK. The item arrived in the UK 2 days after ordering via DHL, this is where the problem arose.

If you use normal postage to import your parcels, all come through the Royal Mail sorting office in Coventry. There, spot checks are made on packages entering the country. If you are unlucky and your purchase is over about £50 (I think) you will get stitched for duty or VAT, plus a charge from RM for clearing the package for you. If the package is not picked up, you will receive it with no extra charges.

If you use a courier however, in my case DHL, you receive your package what seems like FOC. Some two weeks later you will also receive a bill from the courier for clearance and VAT. The charges will be more than if by RM because courier services are not exempt from VAT. Couriers automatically pass on the charge to customers they think are liable whether you are or not, relying on most packages going to large companies. If you complain however and demand to see proof that customs have targetted your package, they tend to go all quiet and don't pursue payment!

Well, it worked for me the couple of times I have brought stuff in.

Rick at mrweatherstrip@aol.com (mostly sells on eBay but will respond quickly to email enquiries) was the cheapest I found and delivery time was excellent. They are not genuine GM seals but they have been alright for me. I bought my hood struts from Rodley Motors in Bradford at £40 per pair. The price was similar at John Woolfe Racing in Bedford. Both offer mail order if you aren't close enough.

here it is at the mo. All door handles and locks welded up, all bare metalled and epoxy primed. Tailgate glass removed and realigned(!). I am going to spend my 2 weeks off at Easter getting this car to the body shop for the red to go on.

Best regards.

Those flames make it look like it's actually on fire...mmmm

Leave the front cone off and the car looks like the 2007/08 Camaro concept, nice.

Larger items

Hey guys,

I'd like to know if any of you have any good experience with US companies selling larger items and being willing to ship them across the pond? Im looking to get my hands on a complete set of 91-92 gfx pluss front/rear bumper covers.
Im in no hurry, so slow shipping isn't a problem if the price is decent.

For us Norwegians/Swedes, http://www.jetcarrier.com is good source for reasonable shipping, they do both air and boat freight. Unfortunately a lot of US companies won't ship to a US destination (JetCarrier is located in NJ) while charging a credit card from outside the US.

I had it flown in to my local airport and then the courier delivered it to my garage. Pretty straight forward with no hangups.
