Transmission Rebuild

Could any of you guys tell me approximately how much it would cost to get an automatic transmission rebuilt. I have a TH220C in an 82 Firebird and I think it's nackered. I don't think they were very good to begin with. Is it better to rebuild or buy another one.

I got prices from a local place for a stock rebuild and it worked out very little more for a custome performance unit from the U.S. Shop around on both sides of the Atlantic.

I got mine from Dana at Probuilt. Not sure if he does the TH220C though. If not you could post on the transmission board.

I would buy from the US too, i dont trust many in the UK to rebuild a unit like this anyway due to lack of experience, and if you do find someone good, it wont be cheap.

yup Probuilt is very good guy. Do not waste your money on your TH220, because it would cost more money to rebuild. Just get 700R4, and save yourself from a headache.

Send a message via ICQ to Dr G
So Gholian, how did you get on? Did you get the transmission from the USA?

I am still trying to figure out what to do. Transmission specialists in the USA seem to be selling preformance units but since I only have the 2.8L engine preformance isn't an option and I do so little milage with the car. I can't get the same transmission that is in the car so I would have to get a 350 which is the closest match but then I would have to buy a converter kit to fit it properly. I rang the automatic transmission specialists here in Ireland to see if I could get my own one rebuilt but none of them will touch it. There are some US sellers on ebay for rebuilt transmissions but that is a big risk getting one sent across and hoping it works.
I am still in a state of denial about my own transmission but will have to make a decision in the New Year about where to get one.

Gerry.
