getting coated edelbrock headers with y-pipe from Jegs

What do you guys think of those headers? Are they any good? I want to get them because they come ready with a y-pipe. And here is the hard question: What is the difference between the rs version ones and the tpi or z-28 version ones? If its just the end size of the y-pipe (bigger for the tpi or the z-28's cause they came with bigger cats) than i definitely want to get the bigger one. Is that the only difference? Has anyone installed these headers on their car and if so was it a PITA? Thanks for any comments or suggestions, i plan on doing the work myself.

The only difference is the Y-pipe and some of the mounting hardware maybe. I got my TES over a year ago and love it. I bought it uncoated and spent some time cleaning up all the casting flash and grinding down the air tubes that stick into the inlets. Then I sent it to Jet-Hot coating for an in and out job and they look as good as new today. I've seen cheaper coating peel off on the first startup so be careful. As for the install, it was a PITA but do-able. Read through the archives here for some good tips on how to do it.

I thought the installation was fairly easy. If you've never done it before you might not think so. The system I have is Edelbrock part #6872, the y-pipe is made up of two 2.5" pipes that end in a 3" collector.

jed, i have the same headers! but i was worried about them because the package says that they are for 87-90 Irocs and Z28 350-305 and i have a 91 Z28, but i haven't installed them yet, im waiting untill i get more money and buy the cat and the cat-back and me and some buds are going to do it all in a weekend (hopefully it won't take longer then that) But, as for now i'm having a hard time on finding a nice cat and cat-back to go with this system. Any suggestions? ANYONE?

oh, and i almost put the TES in my self b4 i got the cat and CB, i had most of the passengers side off.. not too hard and that is the hardest looking side (because of AC)

Well, enough babbling

I would go with the hooker cat back system. You can get it from jegs. Suppossedly the aerochamber muffler makes slightly more torque than straight open pipes. I got it and its great.

yea, i really like what i'm hearing about the hooker system, i also wanted somthing different because my friend has the flowmaster on his car but, i'm wondering if i should try to go 3' back? Or, is it OK to have the headers outlet at 3' and then get a 2.5' cat and CB?

Opnions wanted!

Oh, BTW one more question, should i heat wrap my TES once they are in? and if so what heat wrap should i use? I'm looking at this stuff by thermo-tec, but i really am kinda clueless on this. Any help would be great!
Thx again!

I have the TES and they were a breeze to put in. Easily a 1 man job. If you need instrutions just ask. I have that going into a 3in Catco then going into a 3in Edelbrock catback and i LOVE IT

About the header wrap. I know a guy on this board that had that done and some oil leaked on to the wrapping and when they fired the car up it caught on fire. Luckly they put it out in time.

If you're getting coated headers then why are you wanting to put header wrap on them?

Abe an anyone else trying to choose exhaust pieces,

I'm gonna share my exhaust experiences with you guys because I ended up buying two seperate exhaust systems over the course of a couple of years. If you get the right pieces the first time maybe you won't have to.

System #1 - done by exhaust shop. Edelbrock headers #6876, factory dual-cat y-pipe (gutted cats) 2 7/8" pipe to Flowmaser 2 chamber muffler.

Problems with this system:
1) Got sick of the Flowmaster sound
2) Gutted cats can be noisy
3) In order to pass emissions my exhaust shop removed a section of the 2 7/8" pipe and installed a cat. After the test the removed the cat and installed a 2.5" pipe.
RESTRICTIVE!

Your exhaust system will only flow as much as the smallest section of pipe will allow!

System #2 - done by me! Same Edelbrock headers but with y-pipe from #6872, 3" Hooker Aerochamber cat-back, Hedman 17164 exhaust tips.

This system is way louder than the Flowmaster system, and sounds deeper. The performance difference between 2.5" and 3" is BIG. Go 3" all the way from the y-pipe.
The factory y-pipes all suck, even the dual-cat pipe. It necks down to 2" in several places. The Edelbrock y-pipe maintains two 2.5" pipes all the way to the 3" collector.

Just what I picked up on while going through all this. Do it right the first time.

What about the slp y-pipe? I think i'm gonna get the slp headers (1-5/8) because they are on sale on special right now and i won't have to get them coated cause they are stainless steel.

Jed,
your second time sounds awsome i was really thinking of a hooker catback, but on your 2nd time where was your cat?!? :P just messend with ya, i was thinking of running catless, but then i'll never pass emissions up here in WI. So, i'm wondering where could i get a nice 3 inch hi-flo cat for our cars? any suggestions? I'm kinda on a 400$ budget here and i've found the cat-back for roughly 250$ so, i have around 150$ ish to spend on a cat (i can go over 400 i just don't really want to
Thx!

According to everything I've read the SLP headers & y-pipes are a little better than the Edelbrock stuff, but damn...those prices.

Jegs http://www.jegs.com sells Dynomax high flow converters. Last I looked the 3" cat was a little under $150.

Personally, I don't care for cats. I'm more of a dog person.
