I know its probably not necessary, But im really interested on buying header wraps for my 92' camaro(88' 305 TPI motor). U can see my modifications on the sig down below, But before i get the header wraps just curious to find out their goods and bads. I have edelbrock's TES headers and i believe they are the 16 gauge steel. Now i sprayed high temp. header coating paint on it and im sure its just gonna peel off. I heard the header wraps trap so much heat on your header they tend to bend and deform the headers. So thats why im asking you guys for help. I know getting them Jet hot coated is probably better but i really dont want to go on my way on traveling places or sending my headers to a shop. If possible please note the goods and bads on the header wraps and if u believe i should install it on my edelbrock headers. Its only $70.00 to fully fit all both sides so please help me out.

Man let me tell ya
I just took off my Edelbrock TES that I installed Nov 97 with header wrap -upgrading to Hookers 1 3/4- and I didn't witness any of the disadvantages associated with excess heat being trapped between the wrap and headers- they didn't melt, sag, rust or catch fire - the advantage I can vouch for is the cooler underhood temps
You were smart to paint the headers first (I hope you stripped the factory paint off first ) I didnt and under the wrap the factory paint burned off - but no serious amount of rust accumulated - there was a lot more rust on the flange and air tubes - I didn't want to waste the film but I'll take pics and post em
I really don't understand why so many people hate it
Dont give me too much credit, cause i think i screwed up. I sprayed one coat of 2,500 header coating every hour for just two hours (two coats) and i believe u need to put them in your oven and leave it at 350 degrees or something and i didnt do that. All i did was spraypaint it and let it dry. Before i put the header wraps on should i take away the high heat coat paint. I dont see it in the back of the can to put it in an oven or something. Sorry im just new to this header thing. I did scrub away that black residue that comes with the TES headers. Can u just give me a procedure, once again im sorry.

you're ok with taking off the factory coating and using hi temp paint on the bare metal to protect it- them wrap em- oven heating is a toss up IMO since the paint can cure with exhaust heat
for the headers I got now I chemically stripped all the factory paint off- paint, bake 400deg- paint again no bake- wrap - then painted the wrap-
Dont wrap them. Every header manufacturer will void your warrenty if you do. Header wrap is evil. Yes it traps the heat inside, it traps so much heat that it actually melts the headers and causes them to crumble.
hey kevin have u had a problem with a header and the wrap and by the way since i just added only two coats of high temp. spray paint on the header and just let them dry, is it still effective or will it peel off the moment the motor runs. I dont know im still skeptical, i wanna get the wraps but i need a few more suggestion from others, ill keep your info in mind thanks everyone.

forget the paint, get the wrap.
the wrap works super. I have used it on mild steel TES and it did reduce the life of the metal some, but 7 years was still plenty of life for some cheap headers to last with daily usage.
I like the thermotech wrap.
great im gonna order it today, and since im sorta new to this header wrap, one more question. Do u have to coat the wrap with something or just put it on and hold it with steel clamps?

I painted mine with some 1500º aluminum spray-coating. Yes, I've seen headers crumble after they've been wrapped. Try calling Dynomax, Hedman, Hooker, Edelbrock, and SLP, and ask them if they recommend header wrap. My bet is they'll say no, for the reasons I've given.
Great now ive got some people saying they have seen headers crumble with the wrap and others say they love it. But since ODB has used it for 7 years, ah what the hell, u live once right im ordering them right now. Hey ODB u wouldnt happen to have a pic of your wrapped header a while back. I hope edelbrocks 16 gauge steel will hold up..

yeah the TES lasted 7 years and are still wrapped. The Y-pipe was also wrapped and is basically unusable by the 7 year mark. The Y-pipe has rusted and is crumbling, but the headers are fine still. TES will not last forever no matter what you do, so I say the benefit is well worth the damage to the headers.. they are cheap anyway.
my SLP's are wrapped the same way, and I'd wrap any other header I run in the future no matter what the maker says. It's not like I'm going to ask the company to replace my headers after I race with them for years.
I have no pics of the TES but I have a couple of the SLP's I think. Email me and I'll send them to you.
