Flowmaster vs. Dynomax vs. other

I am restoring a Trans Am. It has a fresh 350 pushing around 350 hp. Anyway I need to put a full exhaust on it. Ofcourse everyone recomends Flowmaster, but not only is Flowmaster expensive, my friend has it on his Trans Am and it doesn't impress me much. Has anyone ever put the Dtnomax system on? Better/Worse? Any other opinions?

Well I have the Dynomax system, and I'd say it's on the other end of the scale for noise level.. My Ultra Flo system is loud enough that it sounds good (nice deep rumble), and makes it's self heard when you step on it. I like the sound of it v.s stock. fro m what I have heard you can get a 3 inch cat back from Dynomax, but they don't list it.. from what I have read the Dynomax system flows better then the flomaster anyways.. so since you are making some good HP, I'd go with something that flows good.

My exhaust sound clip is in the sig, or a stock 350 with just exhaust.

Hooker cat-back $200.

i prefer flowmasters, and im not a big fan of dynomax . but if not flowmasters, id recommend hooker aerochambers. they have pretty nice sound, cost, and performance. it would sound different than marks, but ive never heard a bad sound out of a hooker aerochamber

I don't think dynomax is really all that good of an exhaust set up. I'd get with hooker or flowmaster...I'm very happy with my flowmaster.....and I've heard some pretty mean hooker exhaust set ups too....I had dynomax on my car when I first got it (not sure what type it was)...and it was soooooooo quiet...much queiter then even the factory exhaust.....I didnt like it at all.....I heard borla is suppossed to be pretty nice too.....but..I wouldn't get dynomax....just an opinion..though..

First off....

You guys need to specify which Dynomax system you have.

Super Turbo's are a step above stock performance and sound wise, they don't really compare well to hooker or flowmaster.

Ultra Flo systems on the other hand are a whole different deal. They make more power than the flows and Hooker, cause they flow better. Sound wise..... I let you guys know, cause I just got my Stainless Ulta Flo Muffler in the mail... have'nt put it on yet. But, if it's louder than my super turbo... Which I know it is, it's gonna sound pretty killer.

By the way akatrans: My motor in my 91' is pretty stout and even with the Super Turbo setup, it's really loud. If you've got 350 horse, it'sll still be loud as hell. My 91' is way louder than my 84'. My 84' has a flowmaster American Thunder system. BTW: your friend may not have the 2 chamber system (muffler) cause any 2 chamber flowmaster on a V8 sounds wicked.

For the price: go with hooker.
For the performance and longevity: Get a Dynomax Ultra Flo or a Borla

Ill let you guys know how it sounds, plus the guy with the 3" dynomax rumor, its not true, I didnt ask straight up however I also bought a dynomax high flowcat, (some of you guys need to hook it up with smog so i can gut sometime) and asked about their 3" system, they said they have none for 82-92 camaro just 2.5 , hope this helps some.

RAVIN muffler from Midas is what i have on my 1992 Firebird now, very nice sound not to loud like a flowmaster and is supposed to outperform/flow flowmaster and dynomax,...RAVIN have been on the market now for the past 2 years and hasnt been aggressivly marketed for exhaust setups for our 3 gen rides, ill have to take the laptop out to the car and make a sound clip of it maybe this weekend if i get time to.......

I have a 85 IROC TPI 305. When you talk Flowmaster, Dynomax, etc, you need to be very specific about the model muffler in question. First, have you ever seen a cut-away Flowmaster in person? Joke! If not check their websight. How can exhaust gasses flow freely around all these "V" shapes, and mis-aligned tube-ways? I'm not at all convinced their flow scavenging capabilities are up to what people "claim", though I could be wrong. Furthermore, the "crossflow" style Flowmaster ( one inlet/two outlet) does not flow nearly as well as their normal one inlet/ one outlet, 2 or 3 chamber style. Bigger joke!
Now, as for Dynomax, in the Ultraflow series alone, they have 2 different Ultraflows for 3rd gens (one inlet/two outlet). Ultraflow Stainless Steel, 2 1/2 in inlet, and Ultraflow Welded Racing Muffler, 3 inch inlet(#17227). I have this one, stock TPI manifolds, with no cat, 2 3/4 in factory mandrel bent exhaust pipe into it, and the sound is great. You can look through this muffler one end to the other, straight through...super free flowing. At first, it was only SLIGHTLY louder than stock. After about 300 or so miles, it became a very throaty, deep rumble in normal driving, and quite aggressive at WOT. Plus , no "Flowmaster drone" in the car when cruising. This muffler is much more muscular sounding than the OEM was . Then again, I'm not 18-25 years old, so I don't go for LOUD just for kicks, or because "everybody else does". However, it definately don't sound stock.
I would say that if you just want "loud"for the sake of noise, go Flowmaster. If you want both excellent flow and deep, rich sound, go Ultramax Welded.

Dynomax did (don't know if they still do)make a 3" exhaust, I still have it on my Camaro. It is 3" intermediate pipe and over the axle. Muffler is a super turbo with the dual tailpipes on the same side. It has a quiet rumble at idle and has a nice "musclecar" sound to it. At cruise it is almost OEM quiet. I've had it on the car for over 5 years, 4 of which were daily driving in NYC. Only now is it starting to show signs of needing to be replaced. The car is autocrossed, been down the drag strip, late night 'runs', been trhough blizzards, etc. Much better than the Flowmasters I had on my '77 Camaro, sound wise and quality. If you are going to use the car as a daily driver, go with the Dynomax. If it is just a weekend toy and you want to sound like everyone else, go with the Flowmaster/Hooker setup.

Dynomax does not actually sell a 3 inch system preassembled for our cars, however, if you purchase the parts individually you can build one. I have the part numbers here somewhere, but I can't seem to find them. Someone just recently posted them in another thread....they took it from my original thread....anyways, my only problem with the 3" setup is that the tailpipes do indeed exit on the same side. UGLY The muffler that is used in this setup is the one that was designated for early 90's Chevy trucks.

Directly off their website. It's in a Acro Reader format. I have also called them earlier this year and spoke to one of their reps.

Maybe somebody had another 3" system installed, then put on a Dynomax muffler.

I have on my car for the last 5 years Dynomax part number 17499 (it might have changed, or they stopped making it). It is a 3 inche I-pipe, muffler with dual outlets on the left side with 2 1/2 tail pipes.

So, I KNOW they did make a catback at one time with a 3inche I-pipe, bought it from Jegs or Summit (can't remember).

I do want to argue with you

Since you can't order the kit anymore, then you can use the #17227 crossflow. It flows 940 cfm, and will allow 427 'loss free' HP (that's what Dynomax calls it ). Or it will support 854 'loss free' HP if you can use two of them somehow.

Here's a couple pics. One of the #17739 which is the Super Turbo 2.5" in/out that flows a 385 cfm and will give 175 'loss free' HP.

In the next post I'll put the #17227

Funny I should read this thread today. I just bought a Dynomax cat back without a muffler from a guy who had it laying in his shop floor. It is the 3" I-pipe part number 44063, 3" over the axle pipe part number 43248, and the 2 2.5" tail pipes part numbers 43252 and 43253. After I went to this site:http://www.dynomax.com/documents/pas...al_motors.pdf, I found it is for a 3rd gen camaro/firebird. As you see it is all indeed 3" to the muffler with the 2 on the left tail pipes. By the way, I paid $30 for the pipes.
