Man, i don't want to sound like an a$$ but i pretty sure your going to have people tell you "You can't, it's a v6". Now i'm not saying you can't achieve something 'close'. With the proper cat-back system, and maybe a hi-flow cat you can get something close...Again, i'm just telling you what to expect, no flame intended. Heck my cousin has a 3.1L 92 RS, with a 80 series flowmaster muffler and it doesn't sound half bad till a certain rpm.

you cant make a v6 sound like a v8. a trained ear can be tipped off in less than a second i hate fakers but your a thirdgenner so you have my grace

Just kidding, but V8's have their distinct sound from the firing order and half-order exhaust pulses through the different length pipes used in the exhaust.
you'll never get it to sound like a V8, its a V6. Mine sounds close to a V8 at low RPMs but higher RPM's sounds like a 6 banger, which it should.THe V6 doesnt have the farty 4 banger sound and it doesnt have the deep V8 sound, it actually sounds kind of odd, but odd is good in my opinion.Dont worry about making it sound like a V8 it is what it is and be proud of that.
V8s have their own distinct sound, and so do sixers. Id say instead of trying to make it sound like an eight, just make it sound like a powerful six. My sixer sounds good, but maybe thats from the multiple-backfire victim muffler. Seriously, though, get aftermarket, and dont make it a strait pipe and dont use glasspacks and it should sound pretty good. You still wont get the rumble in your chest feel of an eight though.

It might make more sence just to get a V8 transplanted. Than you'll just worry about making it a LOUDER V8.LOL
why would you want a third gen to sound like a damn blender??? speaking of which i saw a rustang with one of the ***** "whale mouth" front facias a huge double decker spoiler, tinted windows little wire rims the whole 9 ***** yards. and to top it off it was a v6 and it did sound like blender....i almost wrecked i was laughing so hard

Dont try making a V6 sound like an 8. I heard a Z26 berretta,Lumina Z34, and a 3.8 grand prix all with TRUE DUEL exhaust and they sound great. They key to a good sounding V6 is true duels.
the only six that could ever possibly sound like a V8 is a 225 ***** six, since its naturally balanced. the way other sixes are balanced cant give it the deep half tone pulses of a V8

Yeah, we're missing two exhaust pulses, but you can have a louder exhaust. Bolt on Dynomax cat-back #17493. That's the same single-in dual-out cat-back spec'd for thirdgen V8's (not engine code H or E). The kit (all 2.5" pipes & super turbo muffler) is $160 from Summit Racing, 800-230-3030.
You'll need to hunt down the "correct" right rear exhaust hanger from a dual-exhausted V8. I got mine from a junkyard, they're also available from a dealer. V6's used an oval rubber hanger, and the exhaust pipe had a pin that slid into the oval "right to left". V8's used a rectangular rubber hanger, and the exhaust pipe had a tang that slides into the hanger "front to rear". Both hangers use the same bolts & bolt holes on the frame.

V6 has it's place no doubt, it's just not in the peformance market UNLESS it's turbo. It's just a fact that the v6 was produced for mpg and a cheap alternative drivetrans for people that liked the look of the camaro but didn't care for the performance.

The v-6 was produced for the people that only care what their car looks like. These are the same people that go get their oil changed, don't know what size engine they have, and don't realize that there are more than one kind of oil. I'm not trying to offend any 6 owners on this board (If you're on this website, you know what you have and how to take care of it), but the six was built for economy and to boost sales. The v-8 is the camaro's reason for being, but for the people that didn't care, the 6 was there so they could get the look they wanted cheap.

Unfortunately the V6s that GM put put in to 3rdGens, and other cars, in the 80s were pretty pathetic, compared to the V6 of the 90s, both domestic and import.
Considering how much a 3rdGen weighs, the stock TBI 305s were an under-kill.
Now I don't wanna offend the V6 owners but if you gonna dump money into your 6, to make it as fast is can be, after several thousand dollars you'll get your V6 to where a stock TPI 305 is. Hopefully.And a stock 305 TPI is no benchmark.
If you gonna put big money into a 3rdGen, make sure it's at least the 350 version.

If you want to make that V6 sound like a V8...you can try keeping the exhaust fairly quiet so nobody knows, but open up the air intake and throttle body. Can give it that throaty sound similar to a TPI throttle body opening up sucking that air in...and/or throw a Turbo on it.
The Buick Grand Nationals and 20th Ann. Turbo Trans Ams are V6s, and they sound pretty damn bad to me...my next car will be the TTA.

Ohh man, dont get me started with the TTA or the Grand National. My best friend has a Grand National and keeps trying to get me to put one of those motors in my car. I admit i am considering it since he can get my a brand new motor for under 2 grand and with hardely any mods would put me in 12's.
I don't really agree with dallasiroc, since many people don't even think an LS1 sounds like a V8 should. However, pulling a plug lead off the V6 might do it.

Simple! 1. Put a couple of kazoos in the tailpipes or maybe a leather strap
2. Mount a weedwacker 2-stoke under your rear bumper, run the throttle up to your carb/throttle body linkage and the exhaust thru a rubber tube
3. Do all of the above plus shoot a bunch of holes in the muffler and the cat

Good ideas there.
I just put my Dynomax Super Turbo on, its pretty quiet, but still has a little rumble to it. You can really hear the intake roar with the cold air inake system I made.
why would you want your V-6 to sound like an 8? its like putting SS stickers on your V-6 camaro! do you want people to think an SS has the performance of a V6? and if you put an exhaust system on a V6 its gonna sound like a rice burner
Man I won't give you a run around like the rest of these guys. I had a 95 1500 4.3 GMC. When I first got the truck it sounded like a V6 but I run 3" pipe about half way back and run a Afterburner Muffler and it gave it a real deep mello tone even on hard acceleration so this may help you. BUT there again the best way is to add 2 pistons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i disagree mouse- almost all chevy and some fords w/ a V6 and an Exhaust system(mostly trucks and some cars) I-being 15 and don't have the trained ear as some of the older peeps here-have a tough time differintiating a V6 from A V8-with an exhaust system......if you read my earlier post i have seen V6 stangs that sound like a blender.....that was my first time seeing and hearing that in 15 years of listening and watching cars....but most of the ones i see i have to turn my ear and listen closely to tell wether or not it's a V8

the new 6s can pump out over 200hp stock,but we still don't need to hear them,just do it right for performance purposes,headers ect. or get a 1000watt rms sub amp,and play a recording of a chevy 327,like a burned CD with idle,then each gear winding up on different tracks. that way you can tap the "skip fwd" button as you switch gears.if you can get the acoustics just right..you could fool anyone...
