Terrible Exhaust leak and wierd smell?

Ok, here's my situation... ive been trying to piece together my girlfriends 87 bird. It's got a bad exhaust problem, the fumes get strong enough inside the car to make you lightheaded, windows up or down. The other night while test driving i also noticed what smelled like flowers?! This car makes less sense all the time. =) I havent found any obvious exhaust leaks and the catback is new with welded seams. Could this be at all related to a plugged converter, as it does rattle a bit. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance....

That's cars for ya!

If you haven't by now, definently check into the catalytic converter. Fumes getting into the passenger compartment are not good. Also check into the Exhaust manifold gaskets.
