Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I am putting togeather a twin turbo 350 and got tired of looking for decent headers so we welded up our own equal legnth and front turbo flange-I used 2" tubes and a 4" collector-my question is why can't I use a square 4" collector tube out of 1/8 thich stock- this would help disapate heat and be easy to reduce to a t4 flange-our headers will fit any applacation you can use shorties on and will work on a/c cars also
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I have the Hooker 2210 on my Camaro with a little custom modification for that dreadful # 7 plug that usually causes problems or require a shorty plug. I had mine cut and extended to make a little more room. My Y-Pipe was custom made "mandrel bent" in Joilet, Il. for under $300. Here are a few pics. The whole system will be ceramic coated as soon as I get back from Korea in March 08.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Hey DLT504!
Finally a long tube install that works. I've seen a LOT a 3rd gen install's (Dyno Don's shorties are some of the best but I want LT's). I particullarly like the cut out's. I can see the best of both worlds here. Fully muffled exhaust in the stock location for cruising and tuned length open headers for track days.
Question: Are those pre fab s-extentions or did you have them made to suit the custom y-pipe?
Was there an option for solenoid activated cut-outs?

Kevin,
The cutouts are from Summit Racing, already fab. I have electrical cut outs from McCord. Here is a link to both items.

Or are they custom like the y-pipe?
Sorry I did not understand what you meant in the previous post.
I have MagnaFlow's transition Y-Pipe, cost about $27.00. Scroll down to the Magnaflow pipe and select the proper pipe. I have the 124-10798 Magnaflow Transition Y-Pipe, 3" inlets / 3" outlet, 10" length.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Thanks for the info DTL.
My 86 IROC is heading to the fab shop in the next couple of weeks so the pics go a long way.
Now the big question! Do you have any 1/4 mile performance data (I've checked your dyno sheets) with full exhaust as compared to the cut outs open?
I can see a couple of tenths in the 60' times if the exhaust tuning goes like I anticipate.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
i have an 88 305.
i have new exhaust from the cat back. magnaflow converter, 3in midpipe, flowmaster 80 series single in duel out 2.5in.. and stock manafold.
i want headers. best headers for a gooood price for my 305 annd headers that will work with my single exhaust.???
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Once again, this thread is NOT for asking what you should put on your car. This thread is for reading about the differences between header and exhaust choices and making your own decision about what you should put on your car. If you still have questions after reading this thread, then you can start a new one.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
You're absolutely right. This FORUM is the place to ask questions about the exhaust setup on your thirdgen.
But, this particular THREAD is not for asking questions. It is for providing info on the best bang-for-the-buck exhaust systems based on personal experiences with them.
If you have a question, start a new thread. If you have something to add to the discussion about exhaust systems mentioned in this thread, you can post it here.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I just got a picture of this so I thought I'd share for those trying to figure out how much work is needed to install the Hedman long tubes.
The driver's side header hits the A-arm perch. Solution - cutting off a piece of useless metal protruding out right there. This bothered me for a while until I saw exactly what needed to be done and I realized it wasn't that big a deal, to me anyway.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
I went with 1 3/4" Hooker Super Comps (long tube) with 3" pipes into two-chamber Flowmasters dumping at the rear axle. One of the best sounding setups in my opinion, well next to open headers, hehe.
I put tail pipes on it at one point when I was having to haul the kids around, and it killed the power, not to mention made it more cackly sounding. I would definately go with setups with the mufflers dumping before the rear axle for cars that have healthy motors.
Stock setups, the best I had was a Y pipe running in to 3" pipe back to a Flowmaster original replacement muffler. It gives it a nice sound, actually pretty loud for a "one in two out" setup. I thought about going back to this since my kids now want to ride with me and I'm sick of smelling like exhaust.
Re: Whats the best exhaust? What are the best headers?
Hooker headers makes a header that turns in the stock location toward the passengers side of the car, they are ceramic coated, super comp, long tube headers part number 2138-1 you can get them at www.holley.com. Dynomax makes header back dual exhaust kit on www.summitracing.com and has the headers to fit the kit but doesnt come with mufflers. i had to cut a little on the exhaust to fit the long tubes and to fit the flowmaster 40 series but it sounds awesome. I wanted the tali pipes to go out the back so i rerouted some pipes. the part number on the dynomax pipes is WLK-89009. Like i say they are header back without converters but you will be satisfied!
