I have a chicago electric powder coating system and plan on powder coating a set of headers with Columbia coatings high temp ceramic powder. Has anyone tried this? Also any easy way to coat uthe inside, I have a few ideas but yours may be better.

I don't think many people have a powder coating system. I wish I had one though, I'd have lots of pretty parts....

Actually the powder coating system only cost me 55$ from Harbor Freight Tools and the powders are cheap too. It works great and is relatively easy to do and the parts I have done, so far, have turned out great.

Do they have a website? I didn't know they were that cheap...

Regular powder coating won't stand the heat, but he said he's going to use "Columbia coatings high temp ceramic powder".

Guess you'd have to ask them directly.

Sorry to not get back sooner. The web site where I bought my powder coating system is www.harborfreight.com I am an inside track member so I get special deals as I did with the powder coat system, but I think its regularly 70$ or so. It is well worth that I think it works great, but you need an electric range to cure your parts in, and it must be one that you do not use for cooking. The powders are pretty cheap too. The hi-temp coating should work fine.
To coat the insides, make sure the inside is CLEAN, try blasting out the insides then flushing with acetone. I think you should coat the insides first by spraying the coating directly in the tubes from both ends. Then bake it as per the directions, when done and cooled, spray the outsides and re-bake it.

I started out with a Eastwood Gun. and That Chicago gun you have. I hated that Gun you have. for a few reasons. The top feed cup leaks like a pig. and the foot pedal. The Only good thing I liked about it over the East wood gun. was the solid metal electrode in the gun. I ended up ripping that one apart and making the Eastwood gun better with that solid electrode.

Now I use the Eastwood gun for Small stuff and a NordsonSystem for mass jobs.


as for Headers. You can get a Hi Temp powder but it doesnt look that great.

You can do Ceramic if your oven reaches 500*.

I'll tell you this. You can not get 100% of the inside done right on a home based system..

1st. You can rig up a Tube to Spray 100% of the inside yes.. Easy to do e-mail me if you want details.

but what you cant do is Polish the inside which is what SEALS the ceramic and keep sthe heat in and the moisture out.

I do Ceramic Coating and I have a Guy with a vibratory polisher actually polish them out for me. This way they are done right. Inside and out and I give a 3yr warrenty on used and lifetime on New headers.
