headers to exhaust

In the 3rd gen Iroc what is between the headers and the exhaust pipes? Is it the Y pipe? I have seen better y pipes for sale from like flowmaster etc. They are supposed to be higher flowing or somthing. If you buy a cat back hooker exhaust, you wont get that piece so should i replace that? I dont have to worry about emissions at all. Any other advice?

Good luck saving $ and finding a good Camaro. If you want it to go fast without too much work (or even faster with some mods), try to find one with a 350, btw.

As far as your exhaust question, the setup is like this: the engine's exhaust ports dump exhaust into the headers (or stock exhaust manifolds), which (in the typical single-exhaust setup) are flange-bolted onto the two branches of a "Y-pipe", which come together into one pipe, which connect to the catalytic converter, which dumps into the long I-pipe under the car, back to the muffler-tailpipes.

If you were to put a catback (Hooker is nice, btw) on, you could adapt this to what you have as far as your stock manifolds, y-pipe, and cat (it comes with an adapter collar). If you add headers, they won't fit the stock y-pipe so you have two options: (1) install headers whose manufacturer also sells a y-pipe that fits your car (Hedman, SLP, Edelbrock I think) or (2) Pay an exhaust shop big $$ ($200+, probably) to custom bend/weld a y-pipe for you.

You can also consider replacing the cat with a 3" higher-flowing model, but this won't make as big a difference as the headers or catback.

Where by St. Louis do you live? I live about 25 minutes away in illinois. In Between Troy and Highland, if you have heard of them. A little further than collinsville, edwardsville, etc. The town is St. Jacob (800 people oh wow)

Anyway, I was planning on getting the Hooker setup already. I would like Hooker Headers and exhaust. But if I got that What would I have to do for the rest of it? I am considering taking my cat of also. I dont have to ever be checked for emmisions, so that is not a worry. Can you take of your cat and put a glasspack directly in place of it? Or i could get a very higher flowing cat. I think Hooker makes those. Does Hooker make a y pipe at all? ttt sorry for long post,i am trying to learn about it thnx

A third option is to dispense with the y-pipe altogeather and run true duals, like me! Of course, down here in sunny Florida we don't have any of those pesky emissions laws to contend with. ;>

I live in the city where I go to school (WUSoM). I've heard of Troy, but not St. Jacob.

You could put a pipe in place of the cat (between the long pipe to the muffler and the y-pipe from the headers), but I don't know why you would want a glasspack there - did you mean you would do that instead of Hooker catback?

I don't know if Hooker makes 3" cats, but I'm pretty sure they don't make a y-pipe that fits thridgens for their headers... search the boards to make sure, but I think you'd have to have a y-pipe custom-made by an exhaust shop if you went with the Hooker headers ($$).
