I just got a new flowmaster super 40 and put it on my car with a full 3" system with no cat, the sound of the car iss unbelievable but when I go to shift and when I let off it has a real raspy sound, I was wondering if it was just the sound of the muffler or if it was due to not having a cat on it.
Umm all the Flows ive owned always sounded better about a month later, and plus there is a video somewhere on this board, some guy got a video clip of when his 80 was new and after it was broke in, big difference.
Originally posted by deepstage69 Do or have you owned a flowmaster muffler? Cuz if you had you would know how the sound changes when broke in.
And yes it is the bearings that break in
Mine didnt come with bearings (modern technology), but it did come with seals. Should I lube them again? Would white lithium grease be ok? My 80 series was very disappointing when I first got it. After about two weeks it broke in and now it sounds killer. Maybe you could get a sound clip for us of your mighty super 40?

I love the way it sounds, I got a 355 with the full performer rpm package (which sucks, don't even ask about how it runs) with the 80 series I had you couldn't really hear the cam, but with the new super 40, at idle it has a nice deep rumble that really lets the sound of the cam be heard, at wide open throttle it really has the old muscle car sound I was looking for, I highly recomend it and I noticed today after driving it around alot the raspy sound has gotten a lil less noticable. I'll try to find someway of gettin a sound clip for ya.
I had used flowmaster single and dual chambered mufflers for more than ten years and the only time they sounded different is when there was a change in the exhaust system.
I use a thick wheel bearing grease mixed with Marvel mystery oil
and pack the muffler full to get at those pesky muffler bearings
I would definently like to hear what the new Flowmaster sounds like. I know just a regular 40 series is louder than the 80 series. How does this new one compare to the 40 series? I'm pretty happy with my 80 series, but there is always room for improvement
But I also have the electronic exhuast cutout...so it's the best of both worlds.
I guess while I'm at it...I better check my muffler bearings....and I guess I better check the fluid in it, to make sure it's not low

From what I can tell, the part that needs to be "broken in" with Flows is your hearing
ya, how would a steel muffler "break in". i mean i'ts a steel box with steel plates welded to the top and bottom of the steal box...well u guys know how they're built. my 80 FM never changed sounds after almost a year of being on my car. idunno..if anything i would be with iceman02, and the carbon theory.
Flows DEFINETLY break in. When I got my 30's they sounded like ****, but after a month of heavy driving (3000+ miles) they sound a whole lot better. Nice and quiet at idle, and then they scream under WOT.
But they will soon be replaced.. buahhhaaaa!!!

yeah they break in or change sound. Has to be heat affecting it with the carbon buildup. I have 3inch 80series. About a month or so, the car got louder and less raspy. Now it sounds great and alot louder then when I first had it. After headers, wow it sounds sooo goood!!
Document that with quotes from their website or sound spectrum charts.
I still say, 'From what I can tell, the part that needs to be "broken in" with Flows is your hearing.' Mine was just as loud when I first fired it up as it is now, from idle to cruise to WOT - I've just gotten used to the difference from "normal" mufflers.
it keeps gettin louder and less raspy, it's startin to sound great, Imma try and get a clip tonight when I take it out, if I can find that ***** who always has the video camera for his **** site, maybe I can get him to get a clip and send it to me.
I think its just disappointment when they first put it on that it isn't 100% louder. So after driving it awhile they are like wow, this is loud (even though the muffler hasn't changed). Just the perception of it (no longer a newly purchased item - so the emphasis is not on only it).
I've got a 80 series on my 91, and a 40 series on my 92 - goin on several thousand miles and a couple years later, still sound the same...
Sorry, but it IS true. Muffler bearings are a real product now. I have no clue what they do or how they work. Im pretty sure the new 2004 Mitsubitchi GT3000 has them, and i think there were couple others... but the joke still works for most cars.
Well I've got true dual super 40's with no cat, 2 1/4in pipes, and no crossover. Its behind a 327 LG engine bored 60 over with edelbrock performer cam and intake, holley 650 dp, hedman shorties, some POS stock 69 heads.
I'm to stupid to extract the audio from the video so the file is rather large if your on dialup. 1.38MB
I finally got a short video clip the camera wasn't the best and eventhough I tried not to spin the car broke free so you can't really hear it good through 1st and most of second but if somebody can host I'll send it to them.
It amazing how many people say how the sound changes and doesnt change. Seems like 50% split. IMO, it changes. When first started after install,I was somewhat dissapointed until some miles were put on. Now unless my hearing changed, the exhaust note changed with time and with the new 2800 stall converter as well. Sounds good when opened up to 3500rpm+. I can hear the converter spinning and exhaust sounds alittle different with engine under load.

what dont you like about the rpm package?Sorry had to ask
well at first the car would fall on it's face in 5th gear and I had heard alot of people saying that the design of the cam caused that, turned out when my dad hooked up my vacum advance he had it hooked up wrong . , I'm now very pleased with the package, but I'm already wanting more power, it's a never ending process
i agree with the fact that the note changes, i have a delta force 10 series, the 6 1/4 long one, and when i first got it i was disappointed it was actually very quiet but about 3-400 miles later i could tell a difference.. about 2 months later it was a lot louder and it has prety much stayed there... i beleive i posted a topic back when if fist happened to me on here about breaking in a flowmaster...
