Every last 3rd gen owner in my area either has the stock mufflers (and dont care about the car as well, so it seems)... or they're running flowmasters.
Now I dont like the sound of either the stock exhaust or the flowmasters. Flowmasters are just too raspy, and I want a throaty growl, which the stock exhaust gives up to maybe 2,000RPM (and it is soft sounding, but still very nice).
I want something that will let it be known that I actually have changed the muffler, but I dont want it to be roaring loud at idle. I'd love for a throaty growl at idle, but really scream when i get up past 2000RPM. I come home at 2 or 3 in the morning a lot so I dont wanna wake up my neighbors when I cruise down the street.
I was searching (like a good little TGO.com'er) and found that the Hooker Aero Chamber exhaust for our cars is just about that! It makes it sound a little bit more like a older car, big block even. Would anyone take offense to a stock motor that sounded like a big block? I dont want to be called ***** haha.
Anyways, my question is, before I go spend 70 dollars on this... will i notice a difference in the note when all that I change is the muffler, I still have the stock manifolds, and everything else in the car is stock, I just want to enjoy listening to those 8 cylinders of torquing fury a little more

If it runs 20's at 75MPH on the track I'll be happy
If you haven't installed an open air element on you engine, do so. You will definitely hear a change in the sound of your muffler. Then go with a muffler if your short on cash but a set of after market exhaust headers would help greatly on your 305.
how would an open element air cleaner cause any change in the exhaust note? what you may be hearing is the noise generated by the air cleaner, which equates into more "engine noise" but not anymore coming out of the exhaust. they are two separate things.

I was thinking the same thing about the open air element. But to answer your question I do plan on getting an open air element, just to get me over until I can find/afford a dual snorkel air cleaner.
I dont necessarily want my car to be louder, well, I do just not like "Hey, here's a megaphone" "why do I need that?" "oh, I wanna talk to you in the car, but I'll have to start the car up and drive it...."
I have a sound clip of a 350 with a full hooker cat back system, and it sounds sweet, omg does it sound sweet.... but I want to know how well it will sound with just the muffler and stock manifolds, cam, etc...
I think the idea behind the open element is more air in, more air out. Not sure about effects on exhaust, but it couldn't hurt.
As far as a catback is concerned, I like the SLP catback. It is a straight through muffler. No turn, baffles, ...etc. It's quite during regular driving but sound mean when you stand on it. The only problem, other than price, is it has dual exits on the drivers side. But I think performance wise and sound wise, its definitely my choice.
There is definetly alot more noise with an open element (good noise) and you can hear all sorts of neat things from under the hood that make people think there is more than meets the eye
And it definetly changed the tone of my exhaust to quite a bit louder when I put it on. No joke, all my friends think so too. It's really odd.

I definitely heard the difference once I installed the open air element. Also sounds nice when you floor it and hear all that air being sucked into the engine. Sound even better once I installed my 1 5/8 SLP headers.
my point was that it is NOT making the exhaust note louder, only making engine noise louder.

Forgot to add that I can hear the difference in the muffler before adding the SLP headers. Sorry about that xpndbl3.
Well if you want to be original, there are only a few of us on the board with the edelbrock rpm muffler. I really like mine, sounds real throaty throughout the rpm range. I'd post a soundclip but i don't have any and i'm 300 miles from my car. There are some clips on the edelbrock website of an LT1 with edelbrock headers and catback. Btw i have headers and a hi-flo cat. And a 350. I have never heard one on a stock 305 but i'm sure i'd like it. Also the catback comes with stock style tips. I have a pretty cool little engine under the hood and the darn thing looks stock from the outside. Of course it sounds better.
Yea i think it is the most underrated 3" crossflow muffler out there. Sure the hooker is more of a scream high pitched noise, but thats not what i was looking for.
thought i'd update... my oil pump went kapoop on me, so I've been working for the past couple weeks, decided to get the hooker cat-back after I buy some SLP headers from a fellow TGO member Good thing my oil pump died on me though cuz I would have never paid for a cat-back from hooker after i bought the muffler lol.
Anyways, I should have my paycheck this coming thursday and out should go the money for the SLP's then I'll probably just keep the headers and Y-pipe in my room until I can buy a catco 3" highflow cat, and the hooker cat-back.
