Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

that setup looks pretty nice man. I hate the damn oil leaks, my freshly painted exhaust, you know white to keep the heat in, a timing cover leak started, and went back on the front subframe, and then on the exhaust, and ah man, I have to fix this leak. But I'm gonna pull my heads off again soon, put another stall in, a 3000, a bigger cam, better roller lifters, bigger injectors, put a heat stopping plate on the bottom of my HSR and a tune, and I should be somewhere in the 480 to 500 horse range, then its cage time, and fuel pump time, and then I should be good to go. I'm thinking of running one of the dual grandnational pumps. Because that setup uses two 255 liters/hour pumps. One is on normally, but the other kicks in when you need more fuel, so its sweet. Any pics of your motor setup? Check mine out at my site.

-Hedman longtubes (T56 tranny)
-Hedman s-bends
-3.5 feet each side of straight pipe
-Custom fabricated crossmember
-2x Flowmaster 40 series 2 chamber

I'll snap a pic tomorrow of the ground clearance.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

Just looking at your exhaust, and seeing how much clearance your going to have, makes me want to maybe see what else I can do. I will probably take the mufflers a little further toward the floor pan.

How's that crossmember working out? I am going to convert myne this summer to a th-350 and a 3500 stall along with my cam and tune.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

Crossmember worked perfectly, no issues. There are a couple tweaks I need to make to the exhaust, but overall it's higher than my previous exhaust setup. I still won't be offroading (not that I would), but it's definitely got some clearance.

Runnin a y-pipe and a single 3" tube is good for 450hp, so you may want to rethink your setup or run a 2.5" dual set up. There are a lot of setups out there, check them out, mine or others and see what you think.

3 in tubing on a 5.0 isnt bad you dont need alot of hp to reap the benefits of the 3 in piping, as long as you run it right to maintain proper back pressure he would be fine, and theres nothing wrong with running 3 in exhaust on a 5.0, then he would be set if he wanted to go bigger in the future

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

Here is some pics of my brothers car from today. It is a 85 TA. The exhaust is not done yet. Hopefully by next weekend it will be. Its going to have one pipe right next to the driveshaft and one right next to the torque arm. There will be a Magnaflow resonator at the end of each pipe and the whole thing will end right before the axle. I'm also redoing my exhaust starting this upcoming week. I'll post pics of mine also when I'm done.

In some of the pics the all the exhaust is hard tubing. Then in some you will see a short amount of flex tubing in some. This is one of the changes I made today. I'm mounting from the X section back solid so it doesnt hit the floarboards. I'm also going to put 3 bolt flanges on both pipes right after the X. Thats so we can take the exhaust apart and put it back in easier. The whole exhaust actually tucks up a little higher than it looks in the pictures. The whole exhaust was also done on jack stands laying on the ground just using a normal chop saw, angle grinder, and MIG welder. He bought the Summit X-pipe kit but he also had to buy a few J bends from Summit. The whole thing is mandrel bent though. This has not been a fast project. I've got a decent amount of time invested in it but it is also the first time I've atempted exhaust like this with so many bends. I'm proud of though.

There is still enough room to take the huge factory starter out.

I know it doesnt look like it, but there is enough room to put the pipe in the side of the X up against the sub frame connector.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

Looks pretty good so far. It looks like a narrower X pipe may have been a bit easier to deal with. You could cut closer to the center joint to get your in and out pipes closer together.

Here is the one I just made for my car to show what I'm talking about. It is made from ONE 3" summit U bend that cost about $25.

U don't need 3" duals unless your really running over 550hp, even big blocks run 2.5" duals man, pushing the 550hp range, figure it out!
Dude drop it if he wants to run them let him, dont bash on it because you dont think its worth it, oh and by the way ive seen plenty of 5.0's running 3in exhaust that sound amazing and run just fine. Big Blocks that are running 2.5" generally do that because they are worried about there back pressure, and running smaller pipes ensures proper pressure, hell there are people running 4 in exhaust on stock applications, why because they want to.

anyhow, here's my newest setup; dual 3" x-pipe with moroso spiral mufflers. this picture makes it appear to hang down low, but i assure you, i have excellent ground clearance.

Lets see here Ive had a 305, 350, 383, and a 454, by far the most reliable was the 305, not the power house but always ran. oh and 12.70's wow your a couple seconds faster than the stock v6 camaro runs.

Anyways i apologize for going off topic, has anyone thought of using these side pipes:

They are a 4in kit usually used on corvettes, just wondering if anyone has done anything like it with a third gen.

Sidepipes? Thirdgens don't need any help looking white trash. Why people think side pipes are a good idea I'll never know......

thanks sailtexas! as said, i have lots of threads about how to do it, how much i spent, time slips, and even a picture of the bore with a tape measure. i have nothing left to prove, i've moved on. the 305 that i used is STILL alive and running in the 85z28 it originally came in from the factory. *note* my 305 that ran bottom 12's was not a stock engine, and i never once implied that it might be, so don't say i said it was a stock engine.

Thats a sweet exhaust man, probably the best I've ever seen for ground clearance and performance! Probably sounds sweet!

Exhaust looks awesome...but that won't fit with a stock rear end will it? What type of rear suspension set-up is that?

anyhow, here's my newest setup; dual 3" x-pipe with moroso spiral mufflers. this picture makes it appear to hang down low, but i assure you, i have excellent ground clearance.

I'm liking the looks of your exhaust system.
I have to improve on my current setup (using a single muffler that flows about 275cfm!)
Do you have a full pic from underneath?
Modifying the crossmember or building one from scratch isn't an issue. Ground clearence and excessive noise are.

Alright, Has anyone ever made a cut into the rear bumper for the exhaust tips to fit in? If you have take some pics. I seen willies and i might use those tips but a larger cut out so that the bottom of the tip is flush with the bottom of the bumper.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

I love that IRS swap. So much easier to run dials when the driveshaft and pumpkin are stationary. Anyway, I'm gonna say 3" duals are kind of overkill for even a stock 350, I need to figure out something to quiet down my exhaust.

Here's something I did when it came to ground clearance issues. Instead of running a 4 or 5" bodied muffler, I went with Flowmaster's One Chamber race muffler which gave me an additional inch or so of clearance. (The body is just over 3 inchs tall) They do make them for 3" exhaust too.

I prefer to have my mufflers mounted up in front of the rearend because I like the old school muscle car sound. Here's a couple pics I have of my '81 Vette that was lowered down quite a bit. It didn't scrape on speed bumps either.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

I recently had a dual exhaust fabricated by RJ's Custom Piping in Raleigh. They installed Hooker 2055s which connect to Magnaflow cats (at 15 mpg might as well try and pollute less) that meet at an X pipe, then flow stock routing back and over the axle into two Magnaflow bullet-type mufflers. It sounds really nice, quite at idle and loud when accelerating. Any louder and it would be too hard to hear any passengers. They did a great job and I recommend checking them out.

Re: Third Gen Dual Exhaust Picture Collection

Finally got to start mine. I need to get my driveshaft shortened and then the torque arm mount made and the torque arm shortend before I can build the rest. It will come out of the X and go down the far outside of the trans tunnel on each side. I will use two Magnaflow mufflers. Hopefully within a week or two I can finish the exhaust.

Edit: The tubing is 2.5". Maybe its just me but the pictures make it look bigger like 3", but its not.
