I just installed the same system last week. Sounds awsome, Nice deep mellow tone. And the stainless looks great. I'm sold on magnaflow. I don't think any other catback can hold a candle for 400 bucks as far as quality and sound.

What mods to make magnaflow fit?

I was wondering what exactly did you have to modify to make the Magnaflow fit on a third gen? I have a stock 88 Iroc with a 350 and I think I'm going to replace the cat with a test pipe and I'm wondering what tools I'll need to make the magnaflow for the LT1 cars work on my third gen.

yes it is all sainless...................as far as makin it fit a 3rd gen you will need to get a pipe from the cat to join the intermediate pipe.which is only a 15 in long peice ill have to get some pics of that.and another thing you will have to do is rethink the rear exhaust hangers too.....thats pretty much about it.not too hard to make it fit a 3rd gen

hmm odd. the magnaflow catback picture for the ls1 looks like this:

http://www.ls1sounds.com/magnaflow/camaropic.jpg

wonder why the ls1 version has a different style muffler than the lt1 version? i could forsee the ls1 version flowing slightly better based on muffler design..

Awesome!

The sound clip would be great to have, im looking to d something with my el-cheapo duals.

What was the part # for the kit you used? #15620 maybe??

And it was a direct fit except for the hangers on the tips? The Cat piece is nothing to do...

I'd also love to hear a sound clip. I've been going back and forth between a Hooker and a Magnaflow cat-back, and have about a month left to decide. I've heard all the Hooker sounds on the site, but I'm still waiting to hear a good Magnaflow.

I have a Magnaflow on my IROC. It sounds badass. At low speed and low throttle, it's pretty mild mannered, not too loud. Doesn't set off car alarms in parking garages. At highway speed, the interior noise is very reasonable, no loud drone like on a Flow. At WOT the Magnaflow is loudern'hell. It also starts getting loud above about 3000 rpm.

I like the way the exh gas just goes in and makes a U-turn (courtesy of a baffle) and comes right back out on the pax side with basically no muffling. The gas coming out the driver side goes through the muffler and is a lot quieter. Like other "straight-thru" designs, they get louder as they break-in. Brand new they are pretty damn quiet, but give them a few months.

Stainless is the sheet. Last forever. VERY low restriction. Flow better than a Flow. Can't go wrong.

Yea, Magnaflow does have a couple clips on LS1 cars on their site, and it sounds badass on those, but they're not our engines lol. It looks like I've got some more research and thinking to do.

Pictures of connection to cat or y pipe.

I was wondering if anyone has any pics available of the 4th gen magnaflow exhaust installed on a 3rd gen that show the connection to the cat. I'm curious as to what was modified to get it to work because I just got my magnaflow system yesterday and I want to know where to start.

those magnaflow clips on the site dont give you a good taste of the sound. The gto sounds much different when it passes by ur house then on the site, the sound clip really sucks. Its just really fustrating that i cant find a 3rd gen with magnaflow.
----------
all i would need is the back end of the system. muffler and back. how much would it cost me for that and installation.

I love the magnaflow on my car. I got it off my best friend's IROC.

His car is a 1989 IROC-Z, 350 TPI car. Stock TPI. Brodix aluminum heads, ZZ9 cam, shorty headers to 2.5 inch intermediate pipe to a muffler. It sounded like **** on his car. It wasn't very loud or aggressive at all.

We put it on my car, and it sounds ****ing MEAN. Low and bassy at part throttle and cruising. Sounds very nice. When I step on it.. it absolutely SCREAMS.

Take that for what you will.

I would recommend that muffler to anyone.

Does the magnaflow system really fit a third gen camaro. My LT1 system looks like the over the axle pipe should fit but it doesn't. I know the hangers and cat connection are different but did anyone have to modify anything else like cutting and shortening the over axle pipe?

I think I found a Magnaflow at a J/Y. Are there any markings on the muffler so I can be sure? It is a 3" in/dual 3" out muffler.

Yeah they say "Magnaflow" on the side of the muffler.

They make 2 different versions for our cars. One is a 3" inlet with dual 2.5" outlets, the other is a 2.5" inlet with dual 2.25" outlets. Both available in alumanized or stainless.

Email Magnaflow tech. They have dual cat set up already welded and ready to go. They told me they could change the 4th-gen Cat back to fit third gen. I need a little more cash before I take them up on their offer.

They should just make a third gen kit instead of modin a 4th gen to fit. Every company out there makes a third gen exhuast but magnaflow. How hard would it be to just offer a kit(i bet they got a system for a freakin astro van and not a thirdgen "welcome to the land of oz"). THey need to stop messing around and hook us third gen guys up with some exhuast.

PLease get that clip...........................I want to start getting these mods on soon.

Subject: Catalytic converters/muffler for 1991 Firebird

I have a 1991 Pontiac Firebird GTA. 5.7L with dual cats. I currently have SLP shorty headers on the car.

1) I need to know if you have a dual cat kit for this car. If not do you have a single cat kit?

2) I have a Flowmaster Force II muffler on the car right now. I need something quieter. Angry neighbors and all. Do you have something that fits?

We do have the dual-cat y-pipe setup, but it is designed to fit the factory manifolds, so we can’t guarantee fitment to the headers.
But theoretically, if the flanges are designed to be the same size and angle, you shouldn’t have a problem.
We do have Camaro/Firebird mufflers that will be a little quieter than your current setup – check out #14267.

That muffler looks perfect. Do you have that in a cat-back kit?

What is the part number for the dual converter set up?
Is the Catalytic converter setup welded to gether or will I have to find a shop to do that?

Thank You

-Jim

Yes, it’s in #15620 but that is made for the 93-97 cars.
Unfortunately we don’t have a kit made for anything earlier, but that kit can be modified by one of our installers to fit if you wish.
The y-pipe is #23479, it all comes welded together and looks like this:

I still would really like to here a sound clip, can anyone find one out there. I really dont want to go by whats on the magnaflow site. I have heard a gto on the site and a gto(2005) in front of me and the sites clip really sucks.

I have custom tubed exhuast that was run 3 iches formt eh headers to the muffler. BUt the guy that had it before me took out the muffler that came from the shop and put the stock one in. I need to replace theat crap. All i need is the muffler with a 3inch inlet and 2.5 outlets with the pipes runnin out to the back form the muffler. How much would that run me?

I was runnin my car last nite and i really need that exhuast.

Just a 3" inlet and a 2.5" dual out should run you between $50-$100 bucks in Summit Racing depending on which muffler you choose, and which tips to go along with it.

I don't see any listed right now, but performance-curve.com was selling the 93-97 Magnaflow catbacks on ebay w/ a "Free" cat awhile back. If you email and inquire about purchasing the catback w/o the cat they will knock around $50 off. I was quoted $300 shipped if I recall correctly about 6 months ago when I was shopping for a catback for my 94 Z, which was $50-$60 off their listed price on their webpage at the time. I ended up w/ a used Magnaflow for around $200 from a guy on camaroz28.com instead, but that is still a great price. I think it's a great catback, sounds pretty darn mean on my LT1 w/ edelbrock headers and a gutted cat.

im still fishing for the sound clip, i hope someone bits.

As for as looks go i like those tips, All i need is that muffler with those tips and im good to go, unless i just feel like scrapin the other pipes. Is the muffler 3 inches all around? I didnt see a muffler like that on the magnaflow site unless its 2.5 outlets and the tips open up to 3 inches, i like it either way, the flowmaster 80 series doesnt do it for me.

i just ordered a magnaflow this size 3" inlet and a 2.5" out. me and my buddy been having trouble getting it to fit. i just got the muffler and were having trouble getting it in because the muffler outs and ins are to big. we were thinking of ordering the size adapters to get it to fit. anyone think its a bad idea to do that should i send it back and have them make the right size or will it not really matter. im sure the air flow would be better if i didnt have the adapters. any advice is helpful thx

i am suprised you dodnt order the 4th gen kit from magnaflow.you would not have run into this fitment issue if you had.......in your case you might be able to go to a muffler shop and have them install that muffler or you can send it back once you have the correct measurements and get the correct muffler you need!

hmm... i was just getting ready to order my hooker catback for $260 until i saw this thread. For $100 more i can get the magnaflow, now you have me thinkin. What needs done as far as rethinking the exhaust hangers? How hard was it? Wish i could hear it first, im looking for something that is noticably loud at idle with my 383, but ill go by your word and order me one! The part number is #15620 correct?

15620 is the correct number.only thing you will nee to do is get an extension from your cat to the y pipe which isnt that long do not use the s bend they give you ....you will see why.as far as the hangers take a 360 degree universal hanger and install a long bolt with a nut n washer on what looks like a frame rail which goes to the bumper support.it is an easy fitment so you shouldnt be more than 30 minutes on it...

wonder why the ls1 version has a different style muffler than the lt1 version? i could forsee the ls1 version flowing slightly better based on muffler design..

that setup is only slightly different but you should be ok for fitment.if you have to fabricate hangers or anything else it can be done.be creative!

Is there any difference in sound or performance between the ls1 and lt1 kits? The ls1s right tip warps around the muffler. Ima chop my muffler and tips off and hook a magnaflow to my 3 inch i beam. Will it be hard to fit it, will it be expensive.

Sound clip, Sound clip i bet a good sound clip form here will sell a couple dozen magnaflow kits, tell magnaflow u want a comission.

ANy clips yet, i searched around and all I found is flowmaster clips.

Im pretty sure alot of people want to here it, look at the counter . The thread wasnt been around that long either.

I heard the magnaflow kit on a mustang in person and on the site and the site really sucks compared to hearing it in person. The only car clip i like on the site is the station wagon(the chevelle kite).
