Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s

Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
Though GM has discontinued the cat hanger (and though you could probably locate something in the bone yards), the fix, at least for my T5, was simple--and I thank phess11 for putting me on the right track--Napa 35245 and/or CarQuest 529077. Both are about $14. My CarQuest kit came with three bolts and nuts.
1) remove the old hanger from cat and tranny
2) drill out the rivet to separate the rubber from the metal piece that bolts to the transmission
3) attach the kit to the tranny piece and bolt it in place. If you use a bolt from the kit, you'll need to make the hole in the tranny piece a bit larger (This bolt goes through the rubber and tranny piece to fasten the two together just as the rivet did. I used a washer the same size as the original rivet head above the rubber).
4) bolt up to tranny and cat

There's a kit? Who knew....
I just did the same repair for my car, but I used a piece of an old motorcycle tire and some nuts & bolts from ACE Hardware. It worked well.

JamesC,
Thanks for the response, I appreciate it! I found this pic on the internet and it shows the dual cat backet. It looks like this one bolts to the trans and yours attaches to the crossmember. I wonder if I could use the one you show anyways.............looks like it might work.

JamesC,
Thanks again for the input, I appreciate it. The car comes home next week from the paint shop so I'll check out what I really have. Hopefully I just need the rubber piece. I was just trying to be proactive and get a couple things done ahead of time.

JamesC,
I hear that........you seem like you provide alot of input on this board.......here's a question I posted recently and haven't been able to get feedback on..........any help is appreciated!
Hello all,
I'm about to install a VPA keyless entry system. I have looked at the tech guide and searched posts but I still have a question on how this is done.
It says in another post I saw here that you cut and use the white and light blue wires in the harness...........when I look at the guide, it says there are three wires, light blue (lock), black (unlock) and white (trigger). Do I do anything with the black wire?
Just want to make sure before I cut anything!

JamesC,
I got the car back and figured this out..........I didn't realize the small metal piece actually ties to the trans bracket..........makes it alot easier when you are actually looking at it.
I have the tranny bracket, but the rest is gone. I bought a used bracket off of ebay for like 20 bucks so I should be good now!
Thanks again for the help!

Yes i know, its old. But do any of you have a pic of the cat AND bracket on a single cat car? my bracket has a piece welded to it, then that is welded to the pipe behind the cat. Just want to know how this mounts to the pipe. Thanks

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
James, what size cat do you have? My stock cat was a smaller single cat for a 305TPI, I have upgraded to an OE 3" Magnaflow cat and noticed the cat side metal piece won't interchange, the bolt pattern is different on the cat bracket/flange due to the larger pipe diameter... I was hoping this worked for you with the 3" cat to save me some fabricating.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
JamesC, out of curiosity, do you have a 4 bolt cat on your car? The cat side bracket appears to be a 4 bolt style. It's definitely different from the 2 bolt bracket I have.
The NAPA piece does not appear that it would work on my cat, however the rubber part would work.

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
The Napa and CarQuest part numbers are for replacement rubber only.
EDIT: I'm currently using the piece on a Hooker, Catco, Hooker system. No issues.

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
I bought this hanger for my car. I originally had the 2 bolt cat. I converted the exhaust to L69 specs with a 4 bolt cat, magnaflow y pipe and Dynomax cat back. This will work with the 4 bolt cat, but you need to drill another hole in it as one of the holes in it does not line up with the 4 bolt flange. No biggie - and it is a sturdy piece.

Came across this post while looking for a fix for the notorious cat hanger failure. CarQuest number got me nothing but I ran the Napa number through RockAuto and found it for $9 just in case someone is looking. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...&jnid=4&jpid=2

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
I used the original auto hanger. Got a piece of aluminum at Home Depot about an inch and a half wide. Marked the tail shaft bracket holes on it then marked the auto bracket hole on it. Drilled all 3 holes and attached it to the tail shaft and attached the one auto trans bracket to the aluminum. Then I just used spacers and longer bolts to hook up the converters to the other end.

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
Is this the correct part for going from 700R4 to T5 in a single cat vehicle? I just noticed that the holes in the piece that connects to the rear of the 700R4 are not the same distance apart as the two holes on the T5 . I was hoping for an easy (good fitting) solution.

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
I used the original auto hanger for my T 5 conversion. I just added a couple of thick washers ,that I got out of the Wilmington plant where I worked years ago, and longer bolts to connect to the cat's. works fine.

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
Well, it's the end that bolts to the cat, so it really shouldn't matter. They expect you to reuse the end that bolts to the trans, which is different for T5 or 700R4. The cat end is potentially different for single vs dual cats, and some cats might have a different bolt spacing. You can pull up the measurements in the PDF on the Walker website to find out if it'll bolt to your flange.

It's for a single cat car but it won't replace the transmission side of the bracket. Won't fit dual cat cars without mods

Re: Cat Hanger Fix & P#'s
I need to dig out my various hangers one of these days and do a side by side comparison. I know the Walker hanger says it doesn't fit some of the single cat applications, and I know the auto vs 5spd hangers are different because the torque arm brackets are different, and the N10 is different. Figure there are more varieties out there than a person would expect, who knows exactly which the Walker was designed to replace.

In my eyes, it's pretty much a replacement for the rubber that rots away..

Prices can change in 14 years since this thread was started. It's no longer $14 but, over $16 now (That's depending on your location). I just decided to link the Napa part here for others. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/EXT35245
