Some of you may seen a previous thread I posted a few weeks back, showing a couple picture's of the Borla exhaust system I'd just purchased for my 3rd gen Iroc-Z
-(For those who never saw the original thread and want to see a few picture's of the system, follow the link directly below)
I was asked to take a sound clip and I finally today, got the chance to take a short video.
It's almost impossible to find sound-clips for this exhaust on a 3rd gen, as not too many people have the exhaust, so I hope this video helps give you an idea of what the system sounds like.
A short description:
The car is an '88 L98 Iroc-Z with minor bolt-ons. (AS&M runners/ported Edelbrock base/plenum will be installed once the weather gets a bit warmer)
--------------
The exhaust consists of:
* SLP 1 3/4" stainless steel headers/ypipe
* Cat has been replaced by a 3" section of stainless steel tubing
* 3" Borla stainless steel exhaust.
Never mind the smoke you see in the video. It's not my car burning oil, it's just that the temperature outside now is just below zero. It's a roughly 2 minute clip of the car's idle and I threw in a few rev's, just for good measure
I didn't want to spin the motor past 3000, 'cause my annoying neighbour's were outside and I didn't want to 'cause any hastle with them. As soon as I get the chance, I'll post some video's of what the car sounds like driving around.
Word of caution though, the video is not a 100% representation of what the car really sounds like in person. Even though the video was recored with a $1800 camcorder, the compression system used by most hosting web-site's, unfortunately, degrades the picture and sound of the original source. Still, it came out pretty good.

are those the round tips on there? couldnt you get them so that they would fit tighter against the rear bumper?
HMM?? sounds great!...I cant wait to hear my borla behind my 383 HSR'ed cammed 1 3/4 long tubed no cat wide open...motor...LOL
Yes, they're the round tips. I wasn't too thrilled about them at first (I like the square tips on my 4th gen Formula) but I've been liking them more and more as time's gone on. They've grown on me.
They look low because of the angle of the shot. When you're standing up right, they hand about 1.25" from the bumper. That's about as close to the bumper as I'd want anyways cause there's a lot of heat coming off those tips and any closer would cause the paint on the bumper to discolor, not to mention darken the surrounding area due to the exhaust fumes.
This is with the 1/2" plate. I've gotten enough "excessive noise" tickets from running this exhaust with an open plate on my 4th gen and I'm not in a real big hurry to add any more to my collection
Just think of the open plate as sounding the same as this one, only about 2x as loud. Even with the 1/2" plate, it's loud enough to be heard at idle from 2 city blocks away. I gotta take it real easy when I'm giving it gas 'cause it attracts a LOT of attention. AT WOT, there is no exhaust on the market for these cars that's anywhere near as loud. That includes the SLP Loud Mouth....
It's actually kind of silly just how loud this thing can be when you really lay into it
sounds great almost tempts me to get the borla instead of the gmmg
I was in the same predicament a few weeks back. I run a Borla on my 4th gen LT1 and absolutely love the sound, so when I picked up a 3rd gen, I was very tempted to just get another Borla and call it a day.
Thing is, I had heard a lot of good things about the GMMG exhaust. "It's the most amazing sounding exhaust ever" was the typical description by just about everyone who commented on it. Having never heard one on an L98, I must admit, I was very curious as to how good it really sounded. I'd heard it before on LS1's and thought it sounded half-decent which surprised me since I normally don't like the sound of an LS1.
I figured if this exhaust could make an LS1 sound good, it would probably sound GREAT on a 3rd gen. I was actually about to place an order for the GMMG when, as luck would have it, someone on this forum actually, posted a clip of what the GMMG sounded like on his 3rd gen...
In all honestly, after watching the clip, I really wasn't impressed at all. In my opinion (don't anybody go and get offended now) it didn't sound much different to the regular run-of-the-mill Flowmaster/Hooker exhaust most people run. Certainly no where near as good as the Borla did on my LT1. Not even close.
I cancelled my plans to go with the GMMG and instead took my chance's and got the Borla. Even though I hadn't heard one before on an L98, I figured it would sound very similar to how it did on my LT1.
I went with Borla and never looked back.
The GMMG is still an amazingly high quality exhaust. Every bit as "exclusive" and "unique" in it's design as the Borla and you can't do any wrong with picking one up, but for me personally, after hearing a GMMG on a TPI, I just wasn't impressed. I'm still a die-hard Borla-fan ....
If I had an LS1 though, I'd definitely go with the GMMG since the Borla doesn't sound as good on the LS1...Go figure
Right on that sounds awsome. I ordered my Borlas back in Nov. Jegs had a sale on, arrived in a week. Same time I ordered my crate motor from a shop , 383. My motor come in a week or so ago. Damn I can't wait , a couple months and I will have it all together. I wish I could just go outside and it all be together now .
Mine was a steal at $100. it was used, but since it is stainless steel it looked new.
I personally wouldn't buy one new at new prices since they are just too pricey.
If you don't mind, how much did you pay? Was it $900 + ?
Thankfully, it wasn't that high. Off the top of my head, I can't remember exactly what I ended up paying for it in Canadian dollars 'cause I've bought so many other things since then.
I ordered it from Jeg's since I've had nothing but good experiences from them in the past (plus, they ship via FedeX which is like 1/2 the cost of UPS). They were having a sale at the time and I'm pretty sure the price was around $590 at the time I placed the order. Jeg's usually sells this system for $820 so that evening when I was "window shopping" on their website and saw the sale price, I just couldn't pass it up. It was a $230 discount Opportunities like that don't come along very often so I took advantage of it.
Of all the Canadian shops that I gt a quote from, on average,I was looking at $1200 + tax + shipping
All in all, I think I ended up saving just over $600 Canadian.
This exhaust goes on sale every now and then, you just have to keep your eyes open if it's something your looking to buy. It's a "great" exhaust, but I'm not too sure it's $900+US "great", know what I mean?
I always recommend people wait until they can find one on sale like I did. I don't think ANY exhaust, no matter how fancy, should cost more than $600 maximum, regardless of what material is used, stainless or not. After-all, what's an exhaust system besides a couple pieces of pipe?
$600 tops and never go beyond that....
By the way, that clip I took, I never spun the motor past 3000rpm. My neighbors were right next door and I didn't want to sat trouble that early in the morning I can assure you that this thing absolutely SCREAMS when you really lay into it. From 3500+ it's got a completely different tone. Describing it as "really loud" would be a gross understatement
I'll try and take some video of what the car sounds like driving around and hitting WOT when I get the chance.
I watch the specials at jegs now and again and I had mine delivered for 594 plus the handling fees.

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
Well someone post here when they have that deal again! :P
I sure will post it for you. The thing is the day I was there I seen the special and I said no way it is usaully 810 plus handling. So I got right on the phone and Called, they said yes it is right . I asked how maney they had left and they said 1 I said just hold on I will get my wifes visa LOL . Then I told my wife she just bought me a charistmas gift
Id 110% ditch the Flow for a borla after hearing mine. It sounded awesome on a cam/headers 305 tpi I cant wait to hear it on my 406 with single turbo setup. The only thing Im worried abot now is the turbo is gonna make it too quiet.
If So there will be one used BORLA in the F/S section.
Ive had a borla on my Firebird for several years and love it. Its not to loud at idle but really speaks up when you get on it. I modified my car along the lines of John Lingenfelters book on modifying 350s. He recommended the Borla as the best for performance. I always rant the largest plate, but now since I installed a cutout I run a smaller plate for less noise on the street and then just open the cutout at the track. By the way, removing the cats a while back really made a big difference in the sound and vibration inside the car.
By the way, I also took Lingenfelters advice on the 1 5/8" headers instead of 1 3/4" headers.
I recently ran 12.78 on a stock bottom, so I guess it worked out pretty good
I couldn't decide either-so I went with Borla XR-1 Race Muffler on some different pipes. I love the sound! Everyone comments on how good the car sounds.
dude if you could get a clip of that XR1 muffler up for me thatd be so awesome. I dont want to buy a whole borla catback and im curious what the xr1 sounds like if its too loud for everyday or not.
I just checked Jegs' web-sight and the price on the Borla has gone up AGAIN! Now its $876 (up from $820)
I swear, this is the only after-market automotive part I've ever seen that goes UP in price as the years go on instead of down like everything else. Considering they've had the same design for 10 years now, (give or take) I don't see why the price should keep rising the way it has. Perhaps the cost of stainless steel materials has gone up I have no idea.
Nearly $900US for a 3" cat-back is way too expensive. Yeah it's a great exhaust, but nearly $1000 with tax? That's pretty crazy

It's Jegs needing to pay for there racing expenses. thats why the price increase.
don't reall know why but this was a long discussion at on time. lol

I just got the borla cat back 14888 like you have I am puting it on my 91 camaro rs but the right tail pipe hangs too low and the cutout pipe points down did you have the same trouble if so what did you do. Do you have picks off install
