Header bolt hits the header pipe??

I was putting on my passenger side header and the fourth bolt from the front is hitting the header pipe to the point that i cant tighten it anymore, Has anyone else had this problem? is it a header problem?

It is confusing me and im not sure what to do. I cant get a socket on it and the wrench takes it to a certain point then the bolt just rubs to hard on the header pipe. I dont know what to do from here,

They are the hooker 2460, i think. The 150$ ones.

Im leaving school now, so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Stage 8 Locking Fasteners 8911A
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...part=STG-8911A

I think it did it with the hooker bolts too, not positive on that though.

Re: Header bolt hits the header pipe??

let me guess, u have the header bolted up all the way agianst the heads already? loosen all the bolts back far enough that they are just barely started then u should be able to slide the header back a little and make all the bolts go in, then just slowy start tightening them a lil by lil on one then a lil on the next and so on untill they are all snuged up. i have the same headers and the same problem thats all you have to do, i hope i explained it clearly enough...

i think what vader is saying is that he can thread the bolt, but once it gets close to the flange it hits the header tube. Am i right? this shouldnt be the case with the hooker bolts try the hooker bolt on the troublesome tube. igotta; you are right though if the bolts arent able to THREAD because of the tube, the header must be pulled away from the head slightly and all bolts tightened evenly

ok i got ya on the back bolt, well what i did on mine was i took a 7/16 wrench and cut the open end off and tig welded it back on at a 90* angle so i had a L shaped lil wrench and i am able to tighten all my bolts I forgot about that its my special header wrench i keep in my center console lol....

Re: Header bolt hits the header pipe??

Ok, redid that side today, and i do beleive i got everything worked out.

I only used one locking bolt though, mostly because one or two is missing and one is stripped inside the allen.. I just used hooker bolts on the rest. i dont think it will be a problem to tighten when needed later.

I am almost positive i got it all worked out, now i still ahve to order my y pipe and install that.

Re: Header bolt hits the header pipe??

I used Allen Head bolts (1"x3/8) and have no regrets... looks better, fits better, and you can still use a ratchet to tighten them up and loosen them off. Way better than the hex head and 12-pt bolts I used in the past.

1" can be too long with some head/headers/gasket combos. I had one punch through the back of the bolt hole into the water jacket. That was after using 3/4" bolts with no problem.

Re: Header bolt hits the header pipe??

I had that problem on my headman headers. Turns out the header wasn't machined correctly and the bolt holes were too close to the primary tubes. Luckily a quick run to the drill press fixed the issue, but not after 4 hours of headaches and tons of cursing.

igotta355z28, nice idea with the wrench. I am having a problem trying to access the center header bolt on passenger side and wanted to know if your headers have the polution tubes on your headers and if you had trouble accessing the bolt with your modified tool. My headers are the Hedman shorties part # 68481.

Thanks in advance,

Benny

if you are having issues with one of the center bolts, you either didnt start that bolt 1st when the header was loose as there are some order to starting the bolts, or the bolt head is just too big.
allen socket, or a nice small head arp bolt will fix the problem.
good luck.

Re: Header bolt hits the header pipe??

I have the 8911A Stage 8 set as well which are 1" long, can I check thread depth in the heads just by sticking a pencil in there, then marking the pencil where it just exits the head threads. I really don't want to have to buy another set of Stage 8's.

I have Hooker 2055 with fel-pro 1444 and the Stage 8 8911A 1" long bolts. Let me know. I may try and test fit first...just sucks that I did not notice these were the 8911A when I got them, I just saw 8911 and got them.
