I was looking into buying a set of hooker 2055's but it looks to include a y pipe for a single cat only. Where can I get a decent header & y pipe combo for less than $500? It needs to bolt to a dual cat set-up for an 89 firebird.

someone correct me if im wrong but i think that 89 was the first year they made dual cats for that car and it was an option (N10)...best bet is to do a search and if you don't find anything just order a set of headers you want like the 2055's without the y pipe and get your own made at a muffler shop...

I saw a Y pipe in jegs catalog for $230 in their tpi section. Whould this be a good one cause my muffler shop is expensive to fabricate stuff, so would it be ok to use the jegs one? Thanks for everyone's help.

you need to check to make sure it will fit the headers you want...for example if you want the 2055's they will only fit the Y pipe that hooker makes, unless you get a custom one made...for $230 you should be able to get a Y pipe made at meineke even for less than that. Id have to see a link to the Y pipe your talking about but most likely its a no go on it...

So what headers should I go with that will give me some mid range torque and great sound? What diameter y pipe should I go with?

a lot of guys on here like the hooker 2055's and its been said they are the best mass produced headers for our third gens...you want the Y pipe to be 3"...i forget off hand the size made but it will hook up to a 3" Y pipe i know that for a fact...Long tubes are the best but require lots of fabrication and tru dual exhaust...if you can get a hold of Dyno Don hes on many of the exhaust forum posts he custom makes headers and y pipes you could get a hold of him and work something out...other than that i like my 2055s...they really opened my car up!!!sounds great too especially if you have a cut out before the cat...

After reading all the opinions on this board, I got the Hooker 2055's, and they have a very restrictive "collector" outlet (under 2" on both sides!), and are also 1-5/8 Dia. primary tubes. Dyno Don's are more expensive, but are 1-3/4 primaries and have a much less restrictive "collector", plus he can do dual-cat "Y" Pipes.

He hand-makes them, so they take a lot of time and are expensive, but they also work with Vortec and Edelbrock E-tech (raised port) heads as well. On my Hookers, I have to take the headers off to get a few spark plugs out because of my E-tec heads. It depends on your future plans for the car, but I've spend a lot of time kicking myself for not buying Dyno Dons headers. Just my 2Cents.
