I agree loud is cool as long it is not obnoxious. I don't see how any one could say any thing about my car as long as they let those motorcycles run around with drag pipes blowing. I have a trick for those who get busted or need to get some where quite. you can put steel wool into the tailpipe, run it for the cops or drive to a funeral then pull it out when finished.

Can you do this trick with open headers damn i need a exhaust.
only in 'Bama would anyone ever think of putting a log truck on a dyno.......just goofing on ya. and yes my car is loud and SERIOUSLY fast; but dont sound like no log truck i've ever heard.ya'll must really haul lumber in 'Bama
putting big rigs on a dyno is a very common practice all over the usa to see where they stand and how strong they really are, most real big shops have big rig dynos....actually fun to see

i got drag pipes on my bike, but i want to be seen and heard, because of all the ignorant people that pay no attention on the road
that steel wool or s.o.s. pads in the exhaust dont work to well, you really get on it for a while and they will shot out on fire, it was actually a trick that old hot rodders used to do.....makes me want to do that, but it take alot of steel wool to plug up 2 3" pipes
My neighbors bitched all the time about my old 305 with hedman headers catco cat and aerochamber. They havent heard the new car with a built 350 and bullet mufflers yet

my neighbors are pretty cool about it, only one whose not fond, but they voiced their opnion i gave mine back since they had moved in a few months ago, now i just make sure to be loud...i personally dont care what others think aobut my car, i dont complain about them riding dirtbikes all the time...

i'll tell you all a little secret that i learnd a little to late. DO NOT become to well known ; period ! the town i grew up in had a pop of 2300. i got blamed for every skid mark, drag race ,loud pipes, you name it, i did it. that translates into tickets,(25 in one summer, only 4 moving violations) fines, lawwer fees(3 years and $7,500 plus)i lost count. then your insurance co. runs your DMV recored, bam!! tripple your premiums. i moved 30 miles away to a city 60,000 pop. within two months they had pics of my car(71 chevelle SS BB/4-spd) on the wall of the squad room, with all the other hell raisers. this stuff follows you. in the end, i sold the car (i bought as a basket case at 13 and worked on 5 years),and could not get any thing nice for 7 years till my recored cleared. couldn't hack 10,000 a year for insurance.....ouch!!! who move that dam soap box over here?

that sucks, i got a ticket for "harsh and objectional driving" over the summer, faught the ticket and got it thrown out. i dont get hassled for my exhaust yet, but with my new setup i think it will be unavoidable
one of my neighbors across the street asked if i would start backing my car into my driveway, cuz he said his carport amplified the sound of my car, and shakes his house. - wtf????? he's like 70, so i try to play along
well, we just switched my car from t-5 to an automatic, so my H pipe didnt fit. I decided to just try and run my car with open headers and turndowns. I live in the country, I mean BFE, and I didnt even make it out of my driveway when a county cop stopped me before I even backed onto the road. Now whats the chance of that happening? I have two good memories. One was the time I got pulled over for my muffler was hanging, but the muffler wasn't hanging, it was in the trunk. I had open headers at the time.
The other time was about 2 years ago on the way home at around midnight, a sheriff had someone pulled over and I slowed down and drove around him. The person behind me was from my job and told me that the sheriff heard up and jumped to his Ford Explorer Sporttrac. I didn't pay attention until I turned to the left. The light turned red after I turned. I saw a vehicle run the red light and was going sideways. It was that sheriff and he got on my bump for about 20 blocks until I turned. Why? Probably the loud exhaust. Also speedometer didn't work.
I get lots of looks in my 1992 Cadillac Seville with hollowed out cat. and Dynomax Super Turbo (F-body style muffler)
Got a 500HP car. It rumbles a bit. Mad, no lotsa staring and smiles! No need to be that loud when driving normal, yeah it's loud when I get on it, it's supposed to be...
Mine hurts ppls necks......no realy it does.....thats why I tented my windows super dark so I could watch them watching me they would alsways look the other way real fast and you could tell they were looking. ( lol ).....now for the front window.....
Do not tint the front window lol! you will not get out of your drive way without getting a ticket. At least around here.
Theirs plenty of front tinted windows around here.....especialy those guys who wheir silver tinted sunglasses and drive with 1 hand on top of the wheel and always have the mean tough guy face on, even when its dead cloudy out. Why do they do this? is this suppose to be -the- cool thing???

I agree that there is a difference between a loud obnoxious exhaust and a loud smooth rumble - it's a fine line that I look forward to taunting!
My first 3rd gen was all stock so not too many problems with complaints - those that did were really just jelous that they couldn't own such a fine machine...
I agree with the statement "just because it's loud doesn't mean it's fast" I notice that around my area it's "cool" to have louda** trucks. The exhaust on my car needed to be moved to make it easier to change out the fuel pump. The still stock exhaust was in such bad condition that it just ended up being cut at a few inches in front of the axle. I liked how it sounded for oh I don't know, 5 minutes. Then it was just annoying. So I'm driving it home about a couple weeks ago with no muffler and I hear some lady's voice yelling "Hey! Slow down!" I was thinking wtf as I glanced at my speedo and saw that I was barely over 20! (speed limit is 25). I just kept driving home. A couple days later I got pulled over by a cop. I think the exhaust got his attention because I saw him in the left turn lane and there was one lane between us. next thing I know he's behind me about a block from the traffic light we were sitting at. I personally think my car sounds like crap with open exhaust...even obnoxious.
there is no such thing as a "good or sweet" sounding open header sbc with a stock compression ratio and stock cam. it takes at least 11.5:1 comp to put the bang in open headers. also cam duration starting at 225-230 @ .050 starts to put the chop in it. imo

i would say starting around 10:7 tho, with a healthy cam, and carbed. the carb sounds better then F.I imo.
At my former job, there was a some old biddy in management that would tell me that my car was too loud. Mind you, this was with the old stock small exhaust. I would love to do drive past her house now at the crack of dawn to really get her mad.

time to get on the soap box again..... this is exactly why multi gerational car clubs are nessary. when i 17 and would have said or done this as a probi the senior members would call me a bumbass and shuned me for a month or so .and if persest in being a dumbass and drawing to much attention some jr. members would give you a attitude adjustment. it works to cause these guys are gods; they own the badest rides you've seen and their opinion/word is gold when you are 16,17,or18...... shutting up now
i cant remember getting harrased too much even with lt's true duals no merge and dumped flowmaster single chambers. i had a few people i know say something about it being a little loud and had our landloard call and say she got three complaints in a week of me "reving up the car in the middle of the night" when i get off at 11pm and was just coming home. honestly for me it was a little loud it drove me nuts after awhile. dont get me wrong but the constant drone inside the car and worring about gettgin pulled over aint worth it. i now have a custom y for my lt's into a single 3.5in i pipe with a cutout then 3in over the axle into a stock ls1 muffler. with the cutout closed the car is fairly loud but tolerable.
if the car is bad *** enough to back up being loud as hell, then i dont think many people have a problem with it... I think people get angry when they turn their head to see what is so loud and awesome sounding and see something they think has no business being that loud. Like when you're out and hear a weed wacker and turn and see a honda going down the street, the disappointment at not seeing the monster of a weedwacker someone has to be using to be that loud is monumental.
10:1 says a very nice looking hotrod can be loud and not get complaints, but you put a half done camaro at the same volume and you'll get phone calls and worse.
Mine's a daily driver, so i prefer the sound to be mean, not loud. And that's not the same thing.
My neighbors are nice about it, and my car has a more agressive tone than a loud one. It does help because a couple of my neighbors are gear heads too. They do give me a hard time about all the screeching when I leave the house! I like to really get on it turning onto the road lol. I'll have to attach some pictures of my driveway when the snow melts!
There was one time though that I drove through my 25mph neighborhood at 50+ and a few cops drove by my house as I was washing my car in my driveway afterwards... the cops never come out to my area unless they get a call.
"Loud pipes save lives" My goal has been to be loud behind the car not inside or in front of it. If done right your car should be quite untill you blow the doors off the car next to you. Just 2 cents.
i drive my car in a highly populated suburb quite a bit, and people on one road in particular always scream at me despite their houses being a solid 40 yards from the street, my car isnt that loud, but i do hustle on this street. point is, they yell slow down when i'm doing less then 10mph over, which pisses me off cause i know it's just stigma for a red sports car with a v8, but someday i plan on coming to a screeching halt and asking one of these awesome people how fast i'm going since they seem to know already. or i'll just do what i usually do and check to make sure my WOT shifts are still good.
No one has said anything to me yet, although my friend and I had about 4 people coming out of their house the other day when he brought his Caprice (with a catback) over and we thought it would be a good idea to have a burn out competition in the street in front of my house I'm surprised none of these old fogies called the cops, and glad they didn't as it would hinder my entrance into the academy...

good thing he's the one who bought it and has to fix then my first car was pretty much identical to yours and i still have it. you could take your car out, and evry day you drive it you could do a 20 ft long burnout(maybe,l03) and you'll prob never do ANY damage to that car other then f'up your tires.

Oh yeah, and that's one of the major reasons I bought a TBI car. I knew it was going to need to be a daily driver to college and work, and even with 170hp, it's still a fun car to drive, and I love how they scream when you are at WOT!
Lol i remember trying to do a burnout with my old 305 with 9 1/2 inch heavy Crager SSs on the back and wouldn't even spin those back tires unless you use the brake

Yea, this lady was a horrible person. Funny thing, my mom is 73 and she totally loves driving my car. The only problem she has is trying to get in and not hitting her head. So I got her a 2008 Jetta.

and just to show off just a little bit, i did a nice smokey burn out on my way towards the exit, i let him pull up to me and all i got was "holy shiz! that thing sounds like a beast!"

I scared the crap out of someone a couple months ago with my Trans Am, I put on headers and the matching y-pipe but had no exhaust, I was getting ready to take it in. I pulled up at the stoplight and this lady next to me looked over like "wtf", then when I went to take off, because I have a manual ya gotta give it a wee bit more gas to keep the RPMs up, and when I did that, I gave it a hair too much and made her jump out of her seat lol.
Sadly, my car is now quiet with its factory exhaust and stock muffler...but it's ok, it's what I could afford. My 91 Z28 vert though, that has a Flowmaster on it and it sounds pretty good IMO, get lots of thumbs-up on that one

I love the sound of a bad *** v8 giving it hell up the street. I laugh my azz off at the lil 4cyl wing cars with thier big huge turbo mufflers trying to make a scene. All that noise and they only went half a block,LMAO.
Hot rodders have always had the same problem for decades about people complaining about the loud mufflers and such. It's just somthing we have to live with. The day they stop us from hot rodding is the day I will only get louder and faster.
( I love the smell of burnt rubber in the evening,,, it smells like,,, VICTORY!!)
i finally got to take the dirty bird out a couple days ago and i must say i i i forgot how much i love my open headers.. i know its loud and well obnoxious but wen cruisin its not bad then that guy, we all new who he is, the guy that sees your car and has his buddies in his have to pull up next to you at 40 mph and they look and laugh becuase his honda has a 10 of spades in his spokes and the 300hp sticker package, its always a pleasin image wen you put your foot through the floor and your rear end squats and starts that beautiful fish tail and wen the smoke clears he and his buddies arent laughin anymore, instead there countin all there change to see if the can get more power stickers.
Thats funny. I usually keep a bag of rice in my console for when I go up to the parts store. Theres usually some kind of punks with some kind of ricers parked there, usually just walk over with a handful and spread it infront of the drivers door. Its really funny to see the look on their face. LOL

yeah, its even funnier when the go up to the local strip on friday nights(grudge racing). Just pisses me off when they do a 20 second burnout and run about 11 seconds eighth mile! But theres usually about 20 F bodies that just put them to shame. Thinking about having a sticker made for the hatch that says " Not Rice". Any suggestions?

I really don't like it, my dad's sounds pretty good though, off brand muffler and duals that meet at the muffler and then exit duals. And it's pretty fun to the flick the pedal whenever I meet someone who can't stop staring at me. and just let it bark. Which is the closest thing I can describe, lol.
But my car, with stock exhaust, I get absolutely no complaints, except sometimes when it sits for a while and I start it I get a little bit of white smoke that comes out, and everyone goes... ohhhh, that's embarrassing..
But where I live... A girl down the street has a 4 door Cobalt that has a fart pipe on it.... and drives up and down everyday, there's a Metro with an exhaust leak, and I guess the guy thinks the sound makes it more powerful............... so he drives it like it's a racecar.. Which it's not. Oh and my mom's Hyundai Accent has a exhaust leak.. annn it's pretty quiet though, it's like right before the muffler. But yeahh. oh and my neighbor has a... MINIVAN. with an exhaust leak.. that sounds like really bad stuff. lol.

just sold my 79 camaro with a built 355 and th350 trans. very loud. drag car basically. shook my house idleing. I have my 92 Z. Its decently loud. Everyone thinks I am going 80 when going 30.. I also have a 1993 S10 show truck. shortbed. vortec 350. longtubes ran all the way back and dumped behind the rear tires. Also very loud. the only quiet thing I have is a yota 4runner and i hardly drive it if its nice out and I go faster in it then aything.
haven't personally had much trouble. i once got ask to leave a town called HICKSVILLE, OH and not come back till i got better exhaust, and then the cop tells me nice car just trying to keep down the phone calls from people beotching about me not pulling cars like yours over at 11:00 at night

i have a 84 firebird with a 383 stroker one night after finishng my exhaust duel cherry bombs with electric cut outs i went for a ride with it it was about 430 in the afternoon and going to a friends house when i got there this old man came out and said you hoodrat you need to fix your exhaust i replyed its new sir he said well it loud i said well you think its loud now just wait i jump in the car start it up and open the cut out and take it to 4 gran and the old guy flips me off and gose in his house

I get angry when people yell at me to slow down when I'm already going slow. Just because a car is loud doesn't mean you are going fast.

Same thing happens to me.
My neighbours are all real cool about it, least they were last year. Ill see this year, im tryin to put a bit more of a lid on it though.
I get alot of odd looks from people cause the car was loud, and sounded like it was going a hell of alot faster then it really was. I could do 100km/h in a 50 area, and no one would give a second look, but i do 50 in a 50 and people stare and the odd yell to slow down gets blurted out.
I used to get annoyed, now i laugh

Thats when i put it up on the converter and smashed the gas petal down and hit the accel rev limiter and shifted into 2nd.........then i relized the huge cloud of tire smoke and marks down the road
since no one had evidence...police couldnt do anything to me......only 1 neighbor has a problem with my trans am..everyone esle comes over and helps work on it
