cheap exhaust idea...

Hey everyone, so obviously as you can tell im looking for a cheap way to make my car loud because i recently just put a new motor and paint on the car so money is a little tight. So my idea is to just remove the muffler and tail pipes on the car now and replace them with a dynomax bullet and a turndown. So i know this will make it loud but will there be any popping or backfiring?

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

In terms of cheap ideas for power and/or sound, I have some tips. First of all, because your keeping this cheap, (im not sure about your state requirements for emissions) scrap the catalytic converter. I put a new cat and flowmaster 80 series on my 92 and it sounded great until about 8 months later when I had premature cat failure. It wasnt a catco or magnaflow (too expensive) and that may be why it clogged. Furthermore, you are trying to keep this cheap. There are three mufflers I would advise you to check out because they are affordable. Flowmasters (nevermind what some people say on here its been a great muffler for 5 years now), Dynomax bullets (loud!), or Force mufflers ( I had these on my Grand Prix GT). If your concerned about interior noise or resonance you may want to install a cheap glasspack muffler in place of the cat. Again, I dont know your state regulations or whether you would care about them or not but if you wanna keep it around $100, your gonna have to forget about a fancy converter.

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

The Dynomax bullet is a race muffler, or a type of resonator? Yes it will be louder. The popping and crackling is caused by it being out of tune, either too rich or too lean.
Why not save your money a little bit longer and do it right instead of trying to do it on the cheap?
Removing or gutting your cat is illegal on a street car in all 50 states. Please dont give us hot rodders a bad name by being illegal.

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

how about a single chamber flowmaster? i have one on my car right behind the y-pipe and dumped right after. i get compliments all the time on how good my car sounds and its very intimidating to some. i always laugh when i tell them its only exhaust and not a built motor (altho i wish it was). the look on their face is priceless. just a suggestion tho

i must note that if u have any type of performance gear like 3.23 or higher, u will have lots of drone with this setup, but i have yet to hear any popping or anything of that nature. i learned to live with the drone(i've always been a fan of that classic flowmaster muscle car exhaust note), but also i dont have my cat on, will be going on next week since my stickers are due. im sure with a cat and the muffler placed in the back where the stock one sits it wont be as bad (drone) or loud

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

Why in the world would you WANT your vehicle to be loud?If you are seeking attention..which is obvious...A great sounding engine..should be heard OVER the exhaust..As far as your car goes..sounds like the QUIETER the better

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

Thanks for the ideas but mabye i should be more descriptive of my idea, i was planning on keeping everything stock except the muffler which i was thinking of taking off because its not welded and then just sliding on a bullet for the end of my senior year.

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

some people take this whole exhaust thing too far. They get into the politics of emissions and what they think a system should consists of. Some of them live out of their back pockets too. From what I gather your pretty stock right now so there is no need in nit-picking about how the engine sounds, your not driving a formula car, you just want some bad-*** growl. Grab a flowmaster or a bullet or something and let other people blow their green on borla sh!t.

What does"living out of their back pockets" mean?

Re: cheap exhaust idea...

it means some people will just spend the extra money because its the "right" way to do it. they spend a fortune on things and expect everybody else to do it that way to. some people work hard and have lots of money to spend, some people work hard and have very little to show for it.

MagnaFlow 14239 is supposed to be a pretty good single chamber muffler. I have listened to the download on the websites and it has a nice sound. Because it is an offset I'm thinking of using it myself. I'm pretty scatterbrained about this and haven't quite settled down to exactly what I want, but I have the headers with the Y pipe and a 3 inch cat. What I would like to do is run a 3 inch pipe down the stock location and giving myself enough room just before the rear end and install the magnaflow at that location. That way I won't have to change the route of the 3 inch exhaust as it travels down next to the drive shaft and I won't have to put an angle on the pipe after the muffler because it will allow me to offset the muffler a few inches towards the passenger sideand all I will have to do then is go up and over the rear end and straight out the back. I know people don't like the single exhaust, it isn't very pretty, but it seems nuts to put all of those bands in the pipe so that you can mount a transverse muffler from a single pipe and then pretend it's dual exhaust.
You can get the magna flow from Summit for about $100 and if you wanted more a lot, which is actually designed for a single pipe in and a single pipe out, you can get one for about 150.
