I've been having issues trying to get my DynoDon Y-pipe to fit in my car. I believe I have come to the conclusion that the reason the Y-pipe is not fitting is due to the oil pan.
There really isn't anything else it could be other than the heads, but the heads are Canfield heads, I have measured the exhaust port height, and it is equivilant to the OE 305 heads on my OE motor.
The oil pan is a bit difficult to measure due to all the edges being rounded, but it seems the sump/deeper part of the pan is about a 1/2 inch longer (front to back) than my original OE pan. Unfortunately, my OE motor has a 1-piece rear main seal, and the new 383 motor has a 2-piece rear main seal, so I can not just switch the pans.
The problem may just be that the ban on the 383 is an aftermarket pan, but I do not know what the difference in the pans are supposed to be.
Has anyone installed Dyno Don's headers on a motor with a 2-piece rear main seal????
If so, what pan did you use? Did you run into any problems?? Did you have to make any modifications to fit, what were they?
With all the good feedback I keep reading on this site about this header kit, of course I would be the only one with issues...
I have written DynoDon on the problem, and there isn't too much he can do, i realize this. He told me that the system was never verified on a 2-piece rear main block. I didn't realize it would have made this much of a difference. Any experience with this would be greatly appreciated.
Any idea if this is due to it being a 2-piece seal pan, or because it is aftermarket? I would rather find a pan that fits, rather than notching it if I can. One user said he had a TPiS pan that fit OK, but he also had a 1-piece seal. I'd hate to drop the $$ into the pan for a 2-piece seal from TPiS only to find it still doesn't fit.
Not sure but I think you would need a 1982 to 1985 Camaro oil pan. You would have to double check as to what year they switched to the one piece rear seal. Not sure what side the dipstick is on with those years. Maybe someone will chime in.
There is no problem modifying the oil pan. I have done it on two of them now with no problems. You just need a good welder.
I did ask Don. He said he couldn't really do anything about it. Not really what I wanted to hear, but what could he do? Like all the other aftermarket companies out there, is it really his responsibility to test fitment of his product with every other combination of aftermarket products out there? I believe so, can only wish for "universal" compadability.
I'm glad he's making a quality product for our car. Unfortunately I have a combination of parts (some aftermarket 2-piece rear main seal oil pan) that he did not verify fitment on.
I did find out that another user has a 383 w/ Dyno Don's header kit, and he is using TPiS' oil pan. I called TPiS and they said their 1-piece and 2-piece pans were the same, except the 2-piece had additional support in the back of the pan. I'm gonna try their 2-piece seal pan and see how it goes.
I was just wondering I purchased a set of his headers and y-pipe awhile ago and just installed them on my 350 camaro, no issues installing the headers but did you put gaskets between the headers and the y-pipe and if so what gaskets did you use. Any help would be appreciated as i will be putting the y-pipe on in a few days
Thank Eric
I had verified this with Don as well, no gaskets are required between the header and y-pipe. That ball style flange connection is designed to go w/o a gasket, just like the ball flange connection behind the catalytic converter.
If its not a thirdgen f-body stock oil pan, it probably wont fit. The stock y-pipe routing from the drivers side goes under the pan. We have seen several non-stock oil pans have problems in this area because they dont leave room for the y-pipe.
An additional problem would be my 383 block w/ the 2-piece rear main seal had the oil dip stick on the right side. I believe teh F-bodies prior to '86 only had the dipstick on the left side, so I would be unable to get a pan specifically for a F-body. I ordered the TPiS pan, hopefully I run into some luck otherwise I'll have to find someone to notch the pan, or possibly modify the Y-pipe.
After my the guy who built my motor told me he gave me a 2-piece rear main seal block and a stock oil pan, I have found out I have a 1-piece rear main seal with an extra capacity pan... Now I'm woried.
Another user told me that he was able to fit the TPiS pan on with the same headers, but the TPIS pan is a quart bigger than stock as well. It's a beautiful pan, too bad it's not gonna work.
I'm gonna get a stock pan at Advance Auto and throw that on, then hopefully I'll be done with that mess. Only now it's a pain taking out the bigger pan. Looks like the motor is gonna have to come out again for that...
Mine bolted right up. Custom fit! Did you replace your motor mounts?
