The most important thing to do with an LG4 is to go to a 3" cat and cat back exhaust (y-pipe or headers if possible), you can pick up 30+ hp by going to a 3" system.
Sound is a function of the muffler - you can get a 3" inlet muffler to make the car sound the way you want.
Try running open headers haha, that sounded great on mine! Seriously though the stock LG4 system is best as scrap metal. I would upgrade as much as you can afford, its honestly the cheapest power you can bolt on to the car. Just dont go overboard and buy 1 3/4 Headers just because they say they are the best. With your LG4 you can get away with 1 5/8 or even 1 1/2s. Look into the Headman LT and Y-Pipe setup. Thats my recomendation to you.
And your Muffler is what is going to make your tone, I have an 80 Series Flowmaster on my GTA. But I dont really like it, its loud but doesnt have alot of tone. Check the boards exhaust clips to find what you want.
And dont give up on your LG! I was running mine into the 14s with a Cam/Intake and Exhaust...and that was at an altitude higher than Denver!
