Welding S/S ???

o.k. i have a magnaflow 16829 s/s exhaust . right now it's just clamped in place . when i install my headers & connect all together i want to tack weld all together . retain clamps & just tack weld in case i might have to drop tank in the future . i have heard that special welding wire is needed for stainless . oh yes , also need to weld cat. delete pipe to "Y" pipe & to s/s exhaust . seems to me that regular welding wire should work . can someone clear this up for me . thanks .

Assuming your using a wire feed mig welder, then you will need to get a spool of ss wire. I just welded mine and the smallest spool I could find was 2lbs @ $8.00 a pound. I am not a pro welder by any stretch of the imagination but it worked out well for me. Hope this helps, Good luck.

You won't need SS wire but if you weld w/ reg. wire the weld will start to rust. Not as readily as plain steel since it mixes with the base metal. However, reg. is ferritic and I assume you have a 3XX series chomium austenitic steel? Do use Ar/CO2 mix, straight argon won't wet out for crap with SS using MIG..

Mr Twin Turbo is right, you can weld ss w/ mild steel rod, it is just not quite as clean and seems kinda silly if you would be welding SS to SS, because as he says, then your welds will rust. Especially for a tack weld, you can just use flux wire in a MIG welder. It will not be a great weld, but you don't want super penetration on a tack anyway, you want it to sit up on the surface somewhat in case you need to 'un-tack".
