Question about header-to-y-pipe gaskets on hedman shorties

Hi,

I bought a set of used hedman headers with y-pipe.

Can someone confirm if the correct gasket to use between the header and y-pipe is a flat 3 bolt flange gasket?

I tried using a doughnut type gasket and I think this was a mistake. I assumed they were made for the doughnut style...but the flanges are now warped. I need to get this figured out.

Thanks for any help!
Clem

Re: Question about header-to-y-pipe gaskets on hedman shorties

I just installed a set on my 86 IROC and there is no gasket between the collector and y pipe..that is provided your collector / y pipe is the "ball & socket" style.

Mine are an older set with a 3-bolt, 3-inch flange. (not the current style ball-socket. I WISH I had that style!)

Can anyone with an older set of Hedmans confirm which type of gasket they use?

Thanks,
Clem

I'd be willing to bet it takes the flat style gasket then.

Mine aren't all that old (4-5 years at most) and have a 3 bolt flat flange I believe.

Mr Gasket Ultra Seal # 5971: 3" collector diameter, 3-7/8" bolt circle diameter, 3/8" bolt hole. bolt length 1.5 inches. Just replaced mine, previous mechanic had most bolts in not-reachable positions. even with a open/box end wrench. Ended up bending the flanges so they don't seal well. Make sure the flanges are straight or level all the way around...
