You read the whole thing and you still dont know?
The '86 Suburban engine will be a flat-tappet cam, and its my opinion those are outdated technology. Today's engine oil lacks the right lubricants to work with flat-tappet cams, so you'll need to constantly use zinc additive to your oil to keep the cam from going flat. Use a roller-cam block, or you can use a roller cam conversion kit in your flat-tappet cam, and enjoy the many benefits of a roller cam.
Shorty headers fit better in our engine compartment, and they come with a y-pipe that bolts right up. Long tubes will give you less ground clearance, and you'll have to custom fabricate a y-pipe, and also long tubes are not 50-state legal for street vehicles. You can get Hooker 1 5/8"'s or Hedman 1 5/8"'s for a mild engine, or Dyno Don or SLP 1 3/4" shorties for a hot engine, and be done with it. Some people claim that long tubes will make a little more power, but really, is the hassle worth it? Shorties drop right in and bolt right up, while long tubes require custom fabrication.
