Maryland Laws

Does anyone know if you're allowed to have exhaust out the side in Maryland? I know I've seen it countless times on older cars, but I'm not sure if it's legal on a daily driver.

Re: Maryland Laws

Maryland exhaust laws go by county. I am pretty sure if your car is 20 years or older you can do "mild" customization and still be historical. Or wait for it to be 25 years old and you can register as street rod and do whatever you want.

not totally sure about maryland, but usually so long as the exhaust exits behind the rear most operating window, you are good.

Well if that's the law then I'm in the clear. It'll be almost to the tire so it'll clear the window. Thanks.

Re: Maryland Laws

except that they usually count the hatch as a window, so it has to exit behind that. Im sure the inspection manual is online somewhere.

im 90% sure that it has to exit behind the rear tires but for historic tags i dont think that law applies. for historic tags you can basically do what ever you want to ur car. i have mine as a daily driver

im a state inspector in md, and i know that for these cars the exhaust has to exit out of the back, it must exit behind the passenger compartment which for are cars is the whole car, if your county doesnt have emmisons and you dont plan on haveing a state inspection, i wouldnt worry about it

Re: Maryland Laws

Okay so it looks like I'll be waiting until next year when I can tag it historic. I've already been through inspection, but I don't feel like being pulled over for it constantly.

Re: Maryland Laws

i wouldnt really worry about it unless its crazy loud, my exhaust has dumped at my rear axle for the past 2 years and ive never been pulled over, ive even had a cop next to me at a red light tell me that it sounded good and he wanted to know what kind of system it was.

Well I'm not sure how loud it will be, but it'll be headers, dual hi-flows, and dual dynomax bullet mufflers. Then again I've only got a 305, so it might not be too loud.
