Backfire

My Camaro backfires when I turn the engine off?? What would be the most logical explanation for this event?

The car has an Edelbrock 750 cfm carburetor which I just rebuilt. But the backfiring occurred pre and post rebuild. The idle rpm is at high of about 3500. Is the backfire due to the excess fuel in the engine/intake manifold?

Or is it mainly the exhaust system?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Backfire

I also had this problem occur pre rebuild with my 85 z28 carb, I had a timing problem which would consequently make my carb backfire and attempt to stay running everytime i went to turn it off.

Re: Backfire

Im having the some problem right now with my 87 RS, the carb is a BRAND NEW eddelbrock 650... im not 100% sure if its timing light or not, but im starting to think its carbon buildup. Id to know what you set your timing at to solve the problem. thanks

I had the same problem with my car at night people have said that it shoots out some prtty mean looking flames when i let outta the throttle. It would be everytime that it sounded like a shot gun though. My issue was the timing is way off. I have parked the car since then and I am converting to carburated so I havent had a chance to see if it still does it or not. One thing you can do is set the car to top dead center and work from there.

Re: Backfire

Hey Redtruck18 have you tried runnins some fuel additives like sea foam through it just so it will clean up any buildup you may have goin on, you may see if that help you out at all

Re: Backfire

No, not yet, but i plan on running some "power tune" through it. (Power Tune is made by a company called Mercury Marine, its designed to remove carbon from inboard boat engines, the basic idea is to spray it in the carb while keeping the engine running, empty at least half the can, let the engine die... come back a few hours later, and SMOKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD... im talking all the carbon in the world blowing out the back end, carbon: goodby) Im pretty sure the timing is just about dead on, maybe off by half a degree either way... but if power tune doesnt help, im gonna play with timing more...
