Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
I have bought Hawks longtubes 1-3/4 stainless headers and are about to buy AFR heads.Which heads have the best clearance for the headers? Shall I buy heads with straight plug or L98 angle plugs?
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
i have the hawks long tube, with afr 1095 angle plug heads. plug clearance is pretty good. i made my own plug wrench to get to no.6 . thats the hardest one for me to get to.
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
I have the hawks longtubes as well but with Dart Pro 1 heads. Its really tight fit on the drives side thanks to Darts slightly different angle on the plugs. Good heads though.
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
supersquirrel, i see you have the Dart Pro 1 heads and the Hawks Longtube Headers for Thirdgens.
You say it was a really tight fit because of the different angle of the spark plug hole on the Dart Heads. How tight was it and did you have to modify the headers to get them to fit?
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
Overall I really like them. They fit really nicely under the car much better than most pictures show. Quality of the headers and Y pipe are really good. My brother is a welder and when he looked at them he was impressed with the work.
I did have to modify one of the tubes to provide some clearance for one spark plug and the plug wire on the drivers side just to be able to bolt the header to the cylinder head.
I spoke with Hawks about the clearance issue and they did say that they did not test fit the headers with every aftermarket head out there and that they were not aware of the difference in the angle of the spark plug hole on the dart heads so beware of that. I stayed with the dart heads because I had nearly $1500 in them already.
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
Ok did you have to modify much? because my 1 pipe on the driver side at the third plug only have only 50% left of the flow because of the dimple, its almost as if it was a 0.850 pipe. I have AFR L98 angle #1040 so I guess they fit better than regular angle plug and I can try to fix the dimple Eric has to make to get more clarence for his heads.
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
stinger that #3 plug was real pain. I had to "modify"(dimple as you said) the tube on the driver side header via some body tools. It wasnt pretty but it allowed me to get the car up and running. It runs extremely well even with that dimple in the tube.
It looks like its down about 45-50% I have not measured so I cant be sure.
I will be honest had I known about the issue with plug angle on the dart heads I would have bypassed them for something like AFRs like you have but I had the heads before I had the headers.
Re: Hawks Longtube headers Straight plug or l98 angle?
Ok It doesnt look good at all, but I knew about it before I bought them So
I will have them fixed because I dont think its necessary with the AFR that have L98 angle.
