Exhaust recording recommendations?

What are some recommendations to create good quality wave files for you guys. I do have access to a laptop, no PDA. Also best place to record the sound would be where? I would like to get a good representation of the sound, because I think I could have made the stock exhaust sound halfway decent if I got close enough to the tailpipe with a mic. I want to record the sound without distorting.

Here's what I did for my latest sound file, I put the laptop in the back seat and opened the hatch, ran a microphone out the hatch just barely so it wouldn't flop around and went from 0-70 or so. Turned out good except by 3rd gear the wind messed it up.

To decrease the size of the wave file you can put the setting down to I believe it's 22,000hz and still have the quality there, and maybe even change it to 8bit I think that's what I did. Just make sure you have the record setting on stereo and not mono.
