Aluminum rear bumper bar.

I have most of the weight reduction done on the front, Now it's time to work on the middle and rear of the car. The aluminum bar is 6061-T6 and has all the factory mounts and suport points. The factory steel unit is 26lbs my aluminum one is 5lbs.

Looks good. I like how you made the tabs to secure the lower portion of the fascia. I've been wanting to make something like this for the front on my car, since I think the fascia is collapsing at high speeds with my front bumper bar removed. I'm thinking about using some thin wall chromoly tubing for mine though.

I installed the front last week so the only picture I have is in the car. The tubing is 1 inch .049 and the mounting plates and tabs are .050 all plates, tabs and tubing is 4130 and the finished part is 4.31 lbs this is with all the factory body and air duct mounts. The reason the rear one is aluminum is the large amount of tubing needed to hit all the factory suport points, a 4130 rear bumper will need to be about 9.5 lbs.

I have no problem making them for others, The problem is selling them on this board, I don't sponsor this site and will not risk getting banned for this. Last year I e-mailed the webmaster about sponsorship and got no reply so I droped it then. I can make and have the tooling for aluminum non a/c heater boxes, T-56 speedo drive kits ( cable and VSS), aluminum adjustable sway bar end links, Dana 44 kits, 4130 A-arms and more, Maybe it's time to work on this.

Good job Jerry. I am very impressed.

You just shaved what, 40 lbs off the car? Nice.

I would also be interested, depending on $.

If I was to make my own....how mush does the tubing cost? What tools are necessary to construct the pieces? i.e. how did you bend it?

sorry jerry I should have read your posts more clearly, I didn't know you were setup to do full scale production/fabrication. I didn't know you were interested in making these for others until yesterday when I reread the thread.

Its not as if you "came" here to "peddle" your wares. If you have contacted the powers that be about being a site sponsor, common sense dictates that there shouldn't be a problem. I would hope that as long as you arent directly competing with them product for product they shouldn't have a complaint right?

anyhow, I PM'd you as I too am interested in this product/products for my ride

Very clean job! How long do you estimate it took? Did you have to use a mandrel to bend these?

Any halfway decent speed accident and our frames are getting tweaked from the impact anyways, but I'd imagine that at parking lot speeds or somewhat greater this would protect at least as well as the stock one does.

When I rebuilt mine, I didn't even think to do something like this. I cut out the rotted middle section and welded in 12ga angle iron to the ends. It works, but I probably added 10lbs to the original weight

Anyways, great job. I always get a kick out of seeing homemade stuff that turns out better than factory could do for us.

I would be interested in a set if the price is right, can't see spending a lot of time doing them myself if I can have them shipped to my door. More time to spend on the engine ;-)

eh, i wouldnt call him a slacker.

from everything ive seen from him, hes a very skilled fabricator..

he probly doesnt want to go into production with it.... im kinda the same way.. i make all kinds of neat electronic stuff, but when it comes to building 40 of the lil suckers to sell, i dont want to do that... id rather continue on designing new things.

i just wish i had the tools he has.. lol.

I would like to have one for the front and rear but Jerrywho's last post on this thread was 10/15/04. Guess hes not really interested in selling them. Understandable though, it looks to be very time consuming. Just wish he would let someone know something.......................jt

Jerrywho,

Dunno if you're still watching this thread, but I just wanted to throw some things out. Maybe you've already thought of them and that's why you're not answering everybody's post....

Irregardless of how strong your impact bar is (I'm not disagreeing with you or questioning your welding/bending skills), I believe in a lot of states its considered illegal to modify "safety" equipment on a vehicle. Now whether or not the impact bar qualifies as a safety item or not isn't for me to say, but if you're going to start producing these things it's worth looking into before you get into a lawsuit down the road.

If I were you, I'd first look into getting a patent for the design, and then look into getting it D.O.T. approved, before you think about producing them. I don't know what it takes to go through these processes, or if it costs anything, but that's what I'd do to cover my butt.

It should be sold for "off road use only" that way what ever the end user does with it is up to them. Just about everything on my driver is offroad use only.
