I'd like to see it painted; what color are you going with?
It's an '04 GM paint, dark grey metallic.. cant' remember the exact code. That will be the main color, two tone or flames using '04 GM "sunburst" which is a bright metalic copper/gold sort of colors which comes on *! cavaliers ($# and colorados, fullsize trucks, etc.
Looks pretty good man, but doesnt it kind of remind you of a Cavalier? not really? well I can kinda see that, like sunfire is to firebird as camaro is to cavalier. It deffinately looks more camaro now.
Did you get your engine bay finished up yet? I you were doing some major welding under there. For the most part, yes. I actually think I over built the upper strut mounts and plan to rework some of it to reduce some weight. There's still a matter of trimming the headlight mounts also which is more of a cosmetic thing than a structural concern.
Are there vents under the headlights? nope.
What do the headlights look like in person. Did the lines match well? The drivers side sticks out a little bit further than the pass. side which is hardly noticeable unless your a car guy. I catch a lot of people checking out the car when its parked at school and just driving around town, i'm sure it's the headlights because that's usually the first question "what are they out of?"

When are you going to fill that hole in the front with a huge intercooler? I dunno, that's what I'd like to do eventually. Still need to do some more reading on the subject first before plopping down cash i don't have anyway lol. By next summer I hope to have a nice 415c.i. in there, then dream about turbos!
just out of curiousity, how long have you been working at this? Its amazing how much of a change the car has been through. Very impressive!!! I cant wait to see it painted!!

I'd probably try to radius the edges on the fiberglass a little more if possible. Some of the cuts in the pictures look pretty square and sharp. If you radius them out it'll actually give it more strength in the long run, because you won't have a stress point at that corner to bend and rip.
Teetoe_Jones Do you think I should use a flex agent on CF body panels when painting??
Ran into someone today that thought it was a race car I was converting back to street use. I had a hard time convincing it was the other way around. Here's a couple more pic's-
Rearend will be like a rollpan C5 kinda, using stock tail lights. One piece at a time it's slowly taking shape.
Yup. It was 'cg91ta's TA or something. I started a thread about it when I first pulled the bumper off my formy years ago. Looked pretty good. I can't find the thread now but I did find some other pictures.
heh... I think I originally did those... I remember messing with the second one forever trying to get it to look what I thought was right and finally gave up thinking it was just going to look wrong no matter what.

I think the only difference between those and the one that I messed with is I pulled the rear gfx farther back for a more squared, less rounded look.
Yes that's the pic's! I made a rough form last night out of a plastic sheet, had to use the jack stands and propane torch to convince the plastic to conform to the shape I wanted. I still need to finish trimming the gfx then form up some sides with carboard and tape.
How much weight do you think you may be saving .. thanks to the rear "conversion" ?
I just started using a local truck scale to sort of guage my progress from now on. I can't say for sure how much weight the car lost on the hatch conversion because I never weighed before and after. maybe 35lbs? I plan to weight the car more often as this whole project progresses.
The stock rear bumper support and urethane bumper was pretty hefty, probably dropped min. of 30lbs on the bumper support/cover. compared to the square channel and carbon/kevlar cover thats on there now.

It might look photoshopped, I just blended the seams a bit where the new bumper cover attaches to the rear quarters. eventually it will be one piece bumper and rear quarters. Should have some kinda update and pics after the weekend!
The square channel should do pretty much the same job as the regular bumper parts .. right ?
It looks what I was working on regarding a little Italian sports car ... I was aiming for that raw early 70's race look .. with basically just a thin piece over the rear wheels .. and exhaust rear end and wheels clearly showing

Teetoe_Jones, I'm looking forward to your concept drawings. I've also been following project 50/50 for a while and I think its a badass project. I'm also a fan of the pro-touring style so good chance I'd be interested in whatever you come up with for the 3rd gens. I'm actually in the process of having someone make me a custom front end for my 91Z, my vision is a front clip that looks close to stock but hangs down lower like the front lip on the actual IROC cars that raced in the IROC series. If I had to give one recommendation on what would sell in the 3rd gen crowd, it would be to keep it simple. Nobody likes the crazy cutaways or curves, ninja vanish style import stuff. But a front clip that looks close to stock, hangs lower, and has a spot for a FMIC would be a winner. We have another member on these boards, DevianB that makes concept drawings. You might want to send him a PM and take a look at some of his drawings, he has alot of talent and I like his style. Here is a drawing he did for me:
At the time I didnt know how to explain what I wanted as far as the rear bumper, but the rest of the drawing is pretty close to what I plan on doing with my 91Z. I've already got the wheels and suspension done, now I'm working on the drivetrain, brakes, and interior. I've got the taillights almost done, just missing the middle clear portion on the outside edges of the lights (rest of the lights were made using portions from 2 sets of taillights). The rest of the bodymods and exterior mods are gonna have to wait until the front clip is done. Unfortunately the problem right now is funds, all my money is being pumped into my drifting project. So not sure how long its gonna be, but if you had a new front end designed and for sale, I might seriously consider it. Keep us updated!!
I agree with what you said about the IROC style front end as well i always thought that there was something that could be done about it and i think thats right on the $$$
I haven't got a chance to do much more bodywork. I did get the "hatch well" and "tail light panel" molded of composites, steel is cut out, and cf stuff installed. Been too busy fixing busted engine parts to get anything else done ;-) I WANT to have it paintable by spring, I just don't see it happening any sooner, Only time will tell. This pic is the latest and will have to do for a couple weeks..
I wonder what the insurance adjuster would say or write? LoL, they'd prolly just "total it out" and give me a check for eight hundred bucks. Either that or get it appraised then pay more for insurance.. well maybe I'll do that once it gets a decent paint job.

Teeter, I just found this post today. I have been in need of a nose bumper/ airdam setup for a while now and just can't muster up to buy another stock unit I just keep mending my original one and its getting worse for wear. If a very decent sportier looking nose piece was availiable right this minute you will have my CC # immediately for your first order.

And that Japanesse CF invert scoop hood is bookmarked on my favorites list already for when I am ready to repaint the car- I have a friend from Japan that will take care of the order for me if I have to go that far to get it.
End of month bump. This is a great thread. I've had some ideas that I've been thinking of over the past few years; mainly a new nose for my T/A that will hold driving lights and maybe a center vent to the radiator. The problem I'm having is trying to get a design that flows with the car and doesn't look like an afterthought, and yet at the same time not require a complete set of custom body panels. I might just have to bust out the cardboard this summer and do a few mockups to help visualize things.
1983Fbody, you have my respect for modifiying your car the way you did. I think you did a great job, especially if this is your first time doing this sort of thing. Keep us updated.

the car isnt my style but i respect the fact that he is making his car the way he wants and finally nobody is talking crap on him for doing it.i think it looks great keep it up and post more pics when you can!!!!
I had to get a new card reader for my digital camera so I can start taking pictures again. I've started sanding the carbon/kevlar hood and also making the bumper flatter in the front (what's this the third design change?!). I'm also tearing back into the frontend to lose some weight with an aluminum radiator support and bumper support, maybe smooth the frame rails, etc. Basically all the stuff I should have done the first time around I'm doing now.
The steel supports underneath are still there, this is just a "skin" replacing the sheetmetal top half of the hood. I plan on replacing the steel supports with composite pieces eventually, the only steel I plan on leaving for the hood would be around the latch and hinge mounts.
I'd like to trim about a foot off the front of the frame rails and move the "shock tower support, front tube" to just behind the power steering box, less steel the better and that alone should remove at least two feet of pipe. That's like 2 whole pounds! LoL I must be obsessive compulsive about the weight loss thing to go through all this work. Next trip to the hardware store will bring aluminum bolts home for the fender mounting and other pieces that dont require a lot of load.
Okay, here you see my sofistahkated aluminum tubing bender. That's right... C clamps and a propane torch. It will be a whole lot easier to put these two alum. supports in for the hoodlatch now rather than just cut off the existing steel structure and try to line things up later on. Should have some more time to tinker over school break. Happy Holidays!
personally man, i think the work you have done to this car is absolutely amazing. and unfortunately for me, i do not have the skills/money to do any of this type of stuff. i really love your work on the front end as far as making things out of bars and removing basically all sheet metal and anything else that was in there. i want to do a lot of very similar work to my car, but as i said, no skills/money. keep up the good work and keep us all posted on your progress! i'm sure i'm not the only one who is totally intrigued by your work.
^ I've been followin' your progress since about the time ya started. Good to see things comin' along altho I expected to see more done by now j/k.
What's interesting about it for me is that I have a Cavalier I'm workin' on, and Sunfire is basically the same thing Well, your car is more like SunFirebird tho... I'm glad you axed that first bumper you made, it was WAY too square for the changes you made with the headlights, etc.

LOL sorry I am to stupid and I dont know how to attach 3 pictures in one reply!!! It is almost identical to the GTA ground effects, but it drops down 2-2 1/2 inches lower than the GTA, and the side skirts are simular to the 91-92 Camaro side skirts. I hope that makes scense, its 2am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the site. You can only attach one picture per post, unless you hotlink them. If you had done a quick search for "body kit", you'd find that the body kits you have posted have been mentioned many times before. Next time, consider posting in a new thread, because this thread is for 1983Fbody's custom work, and it would be nice to keep it that way.
