I've finally managed to get around to working with yet another mold today. I've had the mold done for sometime, but earlier this week I just went back and did a bondo milkshake on the outside for added strength. Today I started the long process of trimming it down and popping out the plugs. I still need to do quiet a bit of work to it before it's ready for the first use. It needs to have some of the bondo/spot putty peel off sanded out of the mold, some of the bumps grind down so the fiberglass replica doesn't get stuck (OEM pieces were of poly-rubber type so they flexed out easily). Not to mention the two seperated. Once done I should have an easy way to replicate the pieces if they get broke or stolen (held only by 4 or 5 screws). Also it'll give me the chance to make some front spats, since they were not included when I bought the package off a member on TGO. Any ideas on how to make mold for the spoiler? I'm guessing it'll take some clay and a box then spread out the clay to only show one side of the spoiler then I should beable to make a mold of that area then start on the next. Doing that I think I can build a 3 piece mold for it. Here's a picture of another spoiler from that same appearance package. Here's one of the OEM rear spats fitted to the car.

Been trying to work out a deal for some more parts so that's take up some of my time. The seller is jerking me around for the past 4+ months. He has supposely sent them 4 to 5 times now. Last time was UPS Frieght and he said UPS returned them 3 times due to not being able to find my address. (They supposely had my house and cell phone numbers but I didn't get a call on either...) I'm thinking Parts supposely included 2 racing corbeau seats, 2 harnesses, 2 10# bottles, some gauges, and a custom vortech with IC setup. All for < $700, I'll believe it once when it gets here.

1982TA: Trimmed down the pass. side rear flare. I noticed I have a small bubble in the gelcoating that I need to fill before I go any further. Been super busy with school/work and it's just to cold outside to do fiberglass currently.

83 Crossfire TA: Yes. For the most part imagine it like the 2nd gen types, but without as much height.

Need to find a new lens cover if I ever go to use it. But that shouldn't be hard I'll just go to a local JY and pull one for a few bucks.

i wonder how the spats would look on my car , too bad they wont fit with gfx though . I still love the look of that package , i think a black car with the spoiler spats and a shaker hood and a 455 pontiac and 4 speed would be totally awesome . And a gold hood bird.

Once I saw these spats last week and the spoiler I instantly thought 2nd gen. Too bad nobody makes aftermarket ones...I seriously have been contemplating making a "retro" looking 3rd gen based on the 79-81 design, and even with a shaker hood I think it would look sweet...I probably couldn't fabricate the hood myself since I have no welding experience. I was even thinking 2nd gen wheels. I like the snowflake wheels and possibly the "turbine wheels" that were offered on the later 2nd gens. Engine turned dash overlay, 2nd gen steering wheel, some gold pin stripes and a big bird on the hood and you would have 2nd gen inspired 3rd gen Of course this whole project wouldn't seem right witout the spats and spoiler so basically it's just a thought in my mind for now, unless I can get a hold of some spats and spoiler.

i got a 14" set of snowflakes if anyone is interested i'd sell em real cheap cause there kinda beat up. still round and still hold air though. i figure they would be good for a backup set, like your track wheels or somthing.

dude, this project is sick! i can't wait to see a finished 3rd/2nd gen. awsome. everyone always puts 4th gen stuff on and RAII hoods and stuff. nice to see somone going the other way.

i also think the "turbofin" 2nd gen wheels look good on thirdgens. when GM released its later concept photos of the 3rd gen, some of them had those wheels. cool

Talking about 2nd gen inspired 3rd gen,- have anybody here ever tried to mount a functional 80-81 Z28 hood scoop on a 3rd gen? I really like the look of that hood scoop, but can't quite picture how good/bad it would look on a standard 3rd gen hood or if it is even possible to make a good fit.

are you talking about the scoop that was actualy attached to the top of the carb? the one that would remain where it was and the hood had a hole it it for the thing. that one?

i don't think it would look that great. but if it had spats and those older wheels then it might work. and a huge bird on the hood of course

just an idea but what about kinda doing the same thing around the rear of the well too? if you did both it would kinda look like a subtle wide body kit... i could be wrong and it would look like crap though. thats some awsome fabrication though i think it makes SCs look awesome

Probably not since they weren't factory until 1988 and it was only an option package.

will this spoiler work on the camaros? very remenisant of the first gen z28 spoilers and i would love to put one on the back of my sportcoupe. are you trying to reproduce these? if so, would you consider making one for the camaro? the sides of the rear quarters are slightly narrower on the camaro and i'm afraid in it's stock state, the spoiler would hang over the sides some, and i don't want that.

This package was designed for base model firebirds only. I have no idea if it can be retrofitted onto a camaro.

I'm making molds for the rear flares currently. I have one blem in my mold surface I need to go back and fill. For now my other motor projects are taking all my time. So I haven't spent any time on my fiberglass projects (heater boxes and Z20 package).

My firebird hasn't been mobile for about 3 years now. I was getting close to having my new 383 running, but then my daily driver decided it need'd to mix 2 gallons of antifreeze in the oil. So I'm reassembling that after I found it had an intake gasket failure, which was probably caused by the thermostat having a split in the tubing.

well, intake gaskets are better than head gaskets i'd say...

this questions alittle off topic but i dont wanna start a whole nother post. I have an 89 GTA and love the look of the birds on the hood its so sick. Well i probly need to get a 3-4 in. cowl for my big block swap, I really dont like the cowl look but i dont know of another hood that will give me clearance, i really want a ram air even if its just for looks since my cars carbed but i dont think its possible. Ok my question is can you paint a bird on the hood with a cowl or is there not enough room with the bump in the middle. looking at that black trans am if you put a bird on the hood itd have to be closer to the front of the hood maybe like 1 inch from the front but do you think itd fit or has anyone done it??
i suppose you could always make the bird smaller but id really like to keep the bird full sized

to reply on how to make that spoiler i would do it in 2 pieces do the back section with the cutout for the lens seperate from the main part of the spoiler. then bond the 2 pieces together after constructed. just my 2 cents an experience in boat buildin and mold building

I had an '88 Z20 that I sold a few years ago.
Loved that car. Wouldn't mind having it back someday.

I had to move after college graduation. I do not have much time to work on them. Whenever I go back to the parent's house I'm normally working on other stuff.

I did get the rear flare mold almost done. I'll start working on them again once the car is mobile.

Damn, those front and rear "spats" would look awesome on my TA. Hope you get a chance to mold some of those.

Just an update:

Chris took a job at the beginning of the year that is away from his "normal" home. So his car/garage isn't close for him to work on these yet. He will continue working on them once he gets the time. For now it is on hold.

News on other projects: LT Ceramic Hooker headers installed, mufflex y-pipe modified to use with Spohn Tq Arm. I also finished my 4" exhaust from the Mufflex Y-pipe back. I need to have an O2 sensor fitting weld on it for my A/F gauge. 383 is running sounds mean with solid roller cam. I need to jet the carb still though. Oil sender or gauge died showing 0 PSI yet, I had 70+ PSI for the first 2+ hours of breakin and still hasn't locked up so it has to be a gauge or sender failure. Had fuse block freak out on me for some reason the internal contacts between the main power and the ACC PWR and the other PWR that's internal no longer works. Thus my reason for no power locks, windows, headlights, and speedo (thank god I thought I messed up the wiring when I had it all apart). Still need to put my timing light on motor, set it by ear for now. Starter is having a hard time turning over the motor... mostly due to the solid roller. TQ Wrench says 95-110 ft-lbs to turn it over at the crankshaft using a turning tool.

I bought back my '88 Z20 in Feb this year after having sold it to a gal 3+ years ago.

pretty nice looking car, how much did you buy it back for? I like the color too, it makes me want to have the Z20 package even more

Amazingly, I bought it back for only $500.
It made the trip up from Los Angeles -> Sac, CA like a champ.

Of course it doesn't look as sweet as when I sold it, pretty beat up inside and out, 190K+ now, but she bought it for $4700 from me in 2003.

It's being stored for now and I'll be making a project out of it.

The third gen bandits have a hood scoop and bird but the ground effects would have to be removed to fit the spats,heres some pics of one on car domain

Yep, I got mine off this forum acouple years back for $200 (rear spoiler and rear spats). Hopefully I'll get more done on this in time, but currently still working on my motor combo. Once car is mobile again I can then focus back on this stuff.

Feel free to make some spoiler molds! I would buy one for sure, and im sure many other people would also. I really like the Hawks 5 inch one alot.

I have one of the spoilers, but no vats. I looked for years, found one in 2004, and haven't seen one since.

I too love that 5" Camaro spoiler at Hawks, and approached them a few years ago about my Z20 spoiler after I decided not to use it. I was hoping they'd make a mold out of mine and produce the spoiler for sale. The guy told me he didn't think there would be enough interest.
