just finished this up just wanted to get a couple opinions, its dark out now so ill have to wait til tomorrow for better pics.so what do ya'll think?
looks pretty sweet u know i think there was a guy asking about clear tail lights earlier today he was curious where he could get some i forget where he posted but his title was sumthin like childhood memories...
It would look better if they were in the shape of the actual oem lense, just colorless. Then maybe fogged slightly so it does not look like you got you lenses busted out.
thanks for the replies guys, yeah i know it would look alot better if the lenses were kinda blury so you couldnt see the light bulb like the oem 7-28 grid style, that would b sweet, but i had a set of berlinetta tails layin around and i aint gotta clue were i could find some lenses that i could fab up to look like that ,so i just used what i could get ,i think it looks kicka$$ myself but to each his own ,right, anyway im kinda busy today but ill post some day time pics soon and if anybody needs to know how to do theirs pm me and ill help ya out.
Momma always told me...'If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.' So, I'll just refrain from my r i c e comments, and how much I dislike clear lighgts, especially on a 3rd gen.

thanks i appreciate that as i said to each his own. cause i might not like some things you done 2 your ride but hey it aint mine so it dont matter what i think,my momma always told me ,beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
allright allright, from now on no more ***** comments! I guess i should have not said anything! Maybe i should keep them stock, then get a 4" cowl and make my camaro look like a drag racer.. heaven forbid I have an opinion that does not match up with yours.
The mustang had them and it's a sore point with me, but they seem to be doing pretty good recently!
from now on, in my opinion, just say "i don't really like them "and then stop. because to you it may look rice but to me your ride might look "cookie cutter"
wait why did it edit r i c er? is that raciest or somethign?

Dude, you need to chill out abit. Seriously.
If you like'em, you like'em. This is a world full of opinions, both good
and bad. You need to expect both. I think the lenses here are a good start to the smoked/clear style ones that I showed you in your post.
Is it something I'd do? No, not at all. I'd much rather black them out by using that stuff, Night Shades. Anyways, get the info you can get and slap'em on your car man. I'm sure it'll turn out the way you are wanting.
And on a side note, what's wrong with a 4" cowl? I have one on my Mustang! lol
Unless you have extremely anal cops where you live, we dont' here, then your tail lights don't have to be red when they are off. Only have to be red when they are on, hence the reason they make red bulbs.
He's right, that's why all of the aftermarket lenses these days have a big red dot in the lens over the red bulb, you need to have red lenses covering the bulbs.
But on another note, I happen to like the tails (with the exception of the berlinetta style), I just think you should try fogging them out somehow (sandpaper maybe?) so it doesn't look like such a cheapo lens. That's just the impression I get from it being so clear. Still a cool mod though.
And I FEEL what Ryan is saying about "cookie cutter" thirdgens these days... It's almost like a perfected cookie recipe. Add 2-4 inch cowl, stir in hi-rise spoiler w/91-92 aero's regardless of year and sprinkle with torq thrust II's
That thing looks like your girlfriend found out you cheated on her and she got a bat and busted out your tail lights like on cheaters.
You will definately get pulled over by a cop for those. They have no red when off.
Thats just my 2cents.
thats funny, but that thing is an 86 IROC-Z.

yeah, i was thinkin of maybe taking the lenses back of and getting some small trailer lights and epoxing them in over the bulbs and putting the lenses back on that wouldn't take but an hour and then i should be a legal begal.

i think its a good start. if it were myself i would do 1 of 3 things.
1. nightshade the lenses so that they appear dark but the light would still be bright so you couldnt get in trouble for it.
2. using paint perhaps grid or drop a design on the lenses.
3. get reflective paint of silver, gunmetal, something nice but a shade darker and paint the reflectors in the light.
just some ideas. i do off the wall crazy crap all the time and get poop for it. i kinda like making people pee peed off

yeah i was thinkin of maybe putting a screen or something over them and paintin them so it makes a kinda grid design, ill have to experiment a little before i do it so i dont mess em up,thanks for the suggestions, yeah i think its hilarious when people get upset about something i done 2 MY car.
basically cut the inner ring off the inside of the tail light lens with a dremel, glued the tail light lens ring to the tail light housing and painted the inside with chrome plastic paint, then traced the lens that i cut the inside ring off of onto a piece of 1/8 inch plexiglass and cut it out leaving about 10 inches extra for the corner or bent part of the tail light, then i duct taped the lens i cut the ring off of to the piece of plexiglass(for a template for the corner or bent part of the tail light) and then using a little propane torch i heated the plexiglass in a back and fourth motion about where the corner or bend should be and applied a little pressure to help the plexi bend smoothly, after the plexi was bent and cooled i traced out the side part(where the lens comes to a point)then i cut out the side with a dremel, then with 5min epoxi i put a thin bead along the front edge(not the side yet) of the ring that i cut off the back of the lens and glued into the tail light housing, then carefully lined up the plexi and layed it on the ring and tail light housing and clamped it until epoxi was fully cured, then i did the same with the side part, then i put a bead of clear 100% silicone along the seam between plexi and tail light ring and where the tail light housing and lens ring meet, after silicone cured then i masked it off with masking tape and roughed up the parts to be painted with fine sand paper and painted with black plastic paint.this is pretty much how i did it.
I like the chevy logo but I have an RS and think i will mask it off and do it that way. but very inventive and makes it easy for people like me who are "electrically retarded"
i dont know why everyone is bashing your mod dude...i mean, sure i personally wouldnt put it on my car but thats because i really like mystock tail lights....but if they dont like it then heres a thought....you dont have to do it to your own car!...i really like the IROC on the third light, i'd love to do something liek thatover the third light on my fourth gen spoiler....oh and no, i dont have a 4inch cowl incase youre wondering (yeah, i read about the cookie recipe lol)
i like it. I was wondering when one of you camaro guys was going to modify your taillights and go beyond just painting your taillights or putting in LED's. I'm working on a custom firebird taillight(not clear or clear-relective) and I did make some clear relective front blinkers for my firebird earlier this year, so I kind of have an idea of what you are doing.
I like how you got rid of the grid-lines that go from left to right, makes the taillights look more clean.

What do you expect when you ask everybody for their opinions?
this is a pretty slick mod. a hater-friendly version could be done in translucent red. you can also get prismatic panels as backing for custom lights. this would help a lot too.
thank for all the replies guys ,im about to take the tail lights out again cause in the daylight the brake lights arent very visible ,but i was at a truck stop the other day and i was waitin on my buddy so i went over and checked out their lights for semis and i found some tail or trailer lights that had about 30 leds with red lenses over all the leds, their 3-4inches around, so i think im gonna take the lenses off and put the 3-4 inch led light assembly in place of the brake light bulb and put the lenses back on so my brake lights can be seen in the daytime ,it should look a little more euroy too,i will post some pics when i get them done ,once again thanks for the replies.
actually the reason the "clear" taillights are illegal is cause there is a law against Modifying factory lighting" so if you take out clear bulbs and put in red bulbs you are "modifying" the factory lights the lenses themselves arent necassaraly illegal just what you have to do to make the car "look" legal why do you think APC is going out of business to may "for off road use only" products ended up on street cars

im sure i won't have any problems as long as my brake lights and turn signals are visible in the daylight and at night,i see people cruisin around with modded tail lights all the time and they arent gettin harassed.
your tail lights look like headlights in those pictures. If they look ANYTHING like that to the guy driving behind you at night, you will certainly be pulled over. And I hope an officer gets to you before you cause someone to get in an accident. Modifying your car and bending some laws is one thing, but what you've done is completely irresponsible.
I DONT DRIVE IT OKAY JEREMY,IT SITS IN MY GARAGE AND IF I DO TAKE IT FOR A RIDE I PUT THE STOCK ONES BACK IN SO CHILL !!,AND WHO ARE YOU TO CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE? YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME OR WHAT I DO,I REALIZE THEY ARENT READY FOR THE STREET YET LIKE I SAID IN POST#38.
any updates yet? I know you were thinking about changing the design a bit with led or something.
No, I havent done it yet but im gonna put some semi multi-led semi-truck tail lights in place of the tail/brake light bulb here pretty soon and ill post some pics when im done.
why do you think APC is going out of business to may "for off road use only" products ended up on street cars
APC makes this really nice black sport seat then smears the big APC logo across the front of it, totally ruins a nice seat. That and their tail lights look like they belong down the toy isle not the automotive section. I'm all for clear lenses, projector, HID, LED. That plastic chrome APC krap makes cars look like shuttle craft on STAR TREK. Beam me up- or away from that junk anyway. Give me the euro look, not the ken/barbie spaceship look.
I think you should just follow your own judgement about how safe your modified tail lights are. Using DOT approved lighting takes any guess work out of it, I'm sure those semi truck LED lights will look great and be perfectly legal in the event of someone rear ending you. Changing headlights/tail lights has always been a part of hot rodding. If you've ever driven a 30+ year old vehicle there is almost a NEED to change the lighting. Headlights are dim, brake lights are small, no corner markers, no wrap around tail lights, no third brake light, etc. It's just a matter of time before our factory 80's lighting is out of date w/ signals now being put in side mirrors, daytime running lights, not to mention headlight technology- something to think about the next time you have a deer jump out in front of you at night.
Oh and try using polycarbonate the next time you have to bend plastic around a corner, it will make a better finished product and not require a torch.
I think they look pretty cool...specially if the car is all black... As far as being legal... you know where you live and you probably know how anal cops may be... its your car and thats the end. There are always going to be people that hate....I have clear front turn signals on my Trans Am like Firebat...and I have blue bulbs I bought from Wally World... Cops don't give me grief for my lights and my wheel well red leds....
ps. If someone has an accident because they get confused about clear tail lights because they think its headlights then they probably shouldn't have passed the driving exam to begin with....
