home made cool air

i dont know if this post has been made already and i assume that thisis the correct place toput this but someone asked me about this before so i figured i'd put some pics up.......now this wont really increase power all that much but it helps the motor breathe a little better.....oh plus i think the cost of materials (including the 25 dollar K&n was like 30 dollars lol) <<--a lot better than SLP's like 300 bucks lol anyway here ya go

start off with a 3" K&N filter...can be cone or cylinder, as long as one end is plugged up

heres the downtube for the cool air....the right angle and straight pieces are also 3"...dont worry about the circular shape of the pipe vs the oval of the throttle body....the heat will turn it oval

3" coupler...like 1.50 at lowes lol use this to connect the down pipe to the MAF

the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor for those who dont know what it is)

MAF and air filter (MAF IS A 3" DIAMETER)

a better view of the two

with the coupler joined in

it started getting really dark by the time i finished but i'll post what it looks like when its all done

heres an old pic of it....you can kinda make it all out, the down tube and coupler, you cant see the MAF but ifyou look closely at the bottom left you can see the filter

thanks for reading....hope this helps out for anyone who needs something like this

I ran a similar "setup" on my old 3.1L. I really enjoyed it, though it probably made a difference in sound more than anything else. Nevertheless, Thumbs up from me.

oh yeah it is definately neat, and it's something that you made for your car. I had a lot of compliments on mine. People asked me who I bought it from or how much did K&N charge me and I always got a kick out of that.

Re: home made cool air

Your still sucking in hot underhood air, so the only "cool benefit" your getting, is the extra noise from sucking in the air.

Do another 90 deg down, cut a hole under there, and put your filter under that tray. THEN you';; get some colder air in/ Not a whole lot, but it'll help at least.

Re: home made cool air

i painted it with spray paint actually but when i redo this system i'm going to just get black pvc and spray it with some clear and it should look better and stephen, yeah i know that its still sucking in hot air from under the hood, but i wasnt thinking about cutting out the tray at the time....now i am considering it and i am considering cutting out a small piece of the air dam and making an aluminum scoop underneath, something very small though and sturdy just to tryto pull some air from under the car up....only problem is....that it floods aroudn me pretty good smetimes lol so i'll have to either think of something new or drive carfully lol and the main reason why i posted this is cuz it only costed me like 30 bucks....25 for the K&N and about 5 for all the other parts and ithought others might be a bit intrigued

you could make it go to both sides with one maf, you just have to but the maf up by the tb before the pipes split off.

Re: home made cool air

not a bad setup...

Stephen... your partially right when driving down the road air will blow threw the headlight assembly...he can do what you said or he can box it in so hes only getting air threw the headlights area...and if u think your not getting much air prolly get much more then you think...just to test it out get some sheet metal make a quick box that fits and anchor it so it dont move and go drive around see if it makes a difference...not trying to argue with you just throwing up another idea that will work and give cold air from outside

my uncle did this on his grand prix...different car but same concept and same principles of hot air in engine bay etc etc...he boxed it in and it helped a lot

You should see what my 350 TPI breathes through stock.

A single slot. Maybe 2" tall, 6" wide....and 1/2" away from the radiator wall.

What's the story with the dual intakes? The IROC had something different?

No. He's referring to the Y shaped V8 TPI & V6 Camaro air filter piece. It won't fit under a Pontiac hood.

Re: home made cool air

oh it wont? i guess someone already tried it? i thought that in the camaro's they had an intake system that split from the throttle body into a Y, one goes near the battery adn then one near where ours currently is. im not talking about that 'ram air' system for the iroc's

If you have a cowl induction hood, it MIGHT, depending on if the raised section starts soon enough, giving the Y piece room to fit.

If it had fit, Firebird's woulda gotten it too.

Made mine out of 4 inch pipe. Then cut out the battery box. So the air filter sits right behind the fog light.

So that's 12 square inches. I don't think the factory screwed up on that one, since the stock Bosch (14094712) MAF has only a 5.965 inČ area. Further, the OEM 48mm throttle body is only 2.3323786 inČ per bore, minus plate and shaft area 4.6648 inČ TOTAL cross sectional area. So the factory really didn't do so badly after all.

Yes, but the opening is only 1/2" away from the radiator wall. Put your hand 1/2" away from your mouth. You CAN breathe. Now go run a mile, breathe DEEP with your hand still there. You could breathe better if your hand wasn't in the way.

Another option is to open the bottom of the air cleaner:

Interesting idea, but introducing hot, underhood air. Cut out the body sheetmetal too, and I think you have a good beginning there.

Re: home made cool air

the only problem i see is that youre using pvc. which isnt very safe, pvc is only used for cold water in water systems, because of the fact when pvc melts it creates fumes which can kill you. and i mean no one wants to die from their CAI, but more importantly no one wants their CAI to melt on them. abs piping might work alittle better but i wouldnt suggest it seeing as how theyre basically the same thing. what i suggest is to take that design to a muffler shop and they can make it out of aluminum piping and they wont charge you that much, and itll even look better
