My idea is to take the piece of red plastic from my high stop light. Measure and cut out a new piece of plastic, just some similar flat material. Mask off an emblem, a firebird, a pontiac logo, camaro logo if you like, whatever, and paint it with some black out paint. Replace it and then have a nifty little light for the back of the car. Has anyone done this yet, so I know whaere to get th materials, or does anyone know what I would need to do this.

I saw a pic a week or so ago of a camaro that had the word "camaro" across the light like you're talking about. Looked pretty cool. I suggest using ABS plastic (found at most car audio shops) since it's easy to cut, it's already black (or you can order different colors) and very cheap. You can pick up a 12" x 12" piece for about $3.00. The ABS is only about 1/16th of an inch thick, so fitting it back in shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Lastly, there is an issue with legality. That light is required on all vehicles made after some certain year, and covering it up, in any way, could draw some police attention. I would try to do it, so it's still as visible as possible.
Not really worried about the PoPo. Texas state inspection states that a car must have two working brake lights. I have had this car inspected with that light not working, and I have never been stopped for it. I'll check on the ABS this week. Should probably be able to hit it with regular old black gloss spray paint and it will work fine. I'll update this thread with whatever I do. Thanks.
I actually made one for my car that said "5.7" It was pretty cool, but I ended up taking it out because the material I used for it (Thin plastic) warped with the sunlight so it looked like crap... Maybe one day I will make a better one out of stronger plastic. Oh and JT... You are going to run across problems when you paint it. TRUST me on that one... I sprayed like 10 layers of black gloss paint to stop the brake light from shining through and you could still see light through the paint. I ended up using black tape on the backside of it as much as I could after I painted it to cover up as much plastic without covering the letters as possible lol...
Yeah sorta. Except my 91 bird has a large light at the top of the hatch. It will be all black except for the emblem, whatever it is.
BrOdBaNd: What thickness did you use? I am going to try and match the stock piece as closely as possible. These didn't warp. Mine is a little singed because the previous owner tried to put an LED light in there and about set fire to the thing.
I'm almost sure you can just go to a vinel shop have them cut out a black vinal sticker and past it over the lens on the light and you would be done. my sister did this on her neon and it work good. I know why did i let her buy a crappy neon. I didn't thats what she wanted.
You really cant see it but here we go. I will get a night pic later

i just used corrigated cardboard painted it black and cut out the chevy symbol. not sure how long it will last, but it worked really good for now. you could also use a cereal box. again, im not sure how long it will last, but it works.

How'd she do that? I've been doing vinyl for about 9 years now, and never had it block the light enough to stop thelight from "bleeding" through & all turning red, like stock.
And yeah, the law only requires the 2 outers. You could totally remove the entire 3rd brake light, the day you buy a car, and still pass an inspection here.
yuo can also if your state alows it put a flasher like the one for the turn singles inline with the power to the third brake light and make it a flashing one so it flashes the camaro or what ever symbole you use i did on my i was told it gets the driver behind you atention becuse he sees a flashing light infront of him/her
hi i also have the third brake light in my spoiler. i also have thought about modifying it. i was wondering if you could take a thin sheet of either metal or wood and cut out what you wanted it to say and then put it inside the lense do you think this will work?

Yes...Sorta
It'll work, but the way the lens are made, the diffuse the light through the lens. Once the light hits the lens, the edges of the letters (or other pattern) could become "fuzzy" or slightly distorted.
