How many examples of Pro-Touring 3rd Gens exist out there? This is something that I want to do to my 1989 Trans Am in the future. I'm talking fat tires, killer suspension, big brakes, and of course the all around performance.
335/30/18 rear tires, nice and fat, coil-overs front and rear, full tubular suspension courtesy of UMI and Spohn, c5 z06 front discs, ls1 rears, 501/520 hp/tq, 5 speed TKO, 9" rear.
I would say that you definitely fit the bill 86 TA. Your car is awesome. That is definitely what I want to go for. How difficult was it to do that and around how much $$$ are we talking?
Well, the car does low-12's @ 114 MPH, probably could squeak an 11 out of it with more practice. It gets 23 on the highway. I drove it 760 miles to Memphis, TN, raced it for three days on the road course & autocross track, then drove it home. I've measured a peak lateral acceleration of 1.27 g on the apex of Gingerman raceway. I got a first place in the autocross at the 2005 NFME in Memphis inthe modified category. It took the Tremec "Trick Shift" award for best engineered 6-speed retrofit at the 2005 NCMA show here in Michigan. It was awarded the Chris Jackson memorial award for most outstanding F-body in October, 2007.
The car has been equipped with 1LE brakes, 17 x 9.5" wheels all round, is now sporting a TPIS Minirammed 385 SBC and has been dyno tested and shown 382 RWHP on a stingy Mustang dyno, with about the same torque. It also has a Chromoly 6-point rolllbar, dual 5-point Teamtech harnesses with camlock releases. It's got the last of the Griffen racing radiators for third-gen F-body, aluminum bumper supports, lightweight SMC plastic hood, and about 160 lb. of mass reduction off the front of the car. It also has a fully modified rear suspension with Unbalanced Engineering's decoupled torque arm assembly to create a dynamic instant center to maximize both acceleration and braking traction. It's got a Moser 12-bolt with 33 spline axles and a Detroit Truetrac differential. it's got a Chromoly driveshaft with spicer 3150 U-joints. The car is also equipped with a NX wet kit NOS for dragstrip action, but I haven't actually tried it yet. I've jetted in an additional 75 HP for starters.
I'm sure I'm missing something. However I have tried to engineer a well balanced, overall sports package that can tour, drag race, autocross, and handle the road course with no worries. So far, so good!
your 84 TA is definitely one of my favorites on this board! I was wondering which headers you used. I had a custom tranny crossmember fabricated that's similar to the SPD one, and would like to run my exhaust in the same routing that you used. How was the clearance and installation with those headers?

The lowest part of the exhaust is actually the collector, at 3.5 inches. The car is lowered half a coil, as well! What you see in those action pictures is the old exhaust. The new exhaust is in the gallery, I am pretty sure... It's the best clearance of any Supercomp equipped car I've ever seen, I think.
