home made CAI to real CAI

so i have one of those home made CAI's wich is actualy a less restrictive warm air intake (of course anything is less restrictive then the stock one with a hole the size of a 50 cent peice) I was takeing a look around it and I noticed that where the old air canister sat I can see stright down to the ground threw the bolt hole. so what i wanted to know is could I cut half the bracket off that was holding the old air canister, leaving the part that holds the samller canister next to it (the charcoal cansiter maybe?) mkae a box and draw air in from below the car makeing it a true blue CAI.

yes you can, lots of people trach both cans and cut that whole plate out and run the filter there. lots of them that way

This routed straight through the battery tray where the charcoal cannister used to reside, with 4-inch aluminum dryer ducting, to the carbuerator hat.

Worked great, but then I got another idea which worked even better, along with my power-blister Transam cold-air induction hood:

Re: home made CAI to real CAI

I agree with 1983 on this one, thats where I currently have my CAI. I just cut the piece that that held up the filter assembly and charcoal can.... I have the filter itself right behind the foglight hole...been working great for over a year, but I'm currently working on a secret project in which I'm going to make a true ram air/CAI in the LS1 style using a 4th gen radiator support... I'll post my results here when I'm successful...

Re: home made CAI to real CAI

At first, I thought about something like that, I even have the Trans Am hood front vents, but then I figured that they wouldn't fit with my current cowl hood. And there just isn't enough clearance from the radiator support to do something for the TPI...so I'm going to use (try to anyway) a 4th gen upper radiator support to see if I can get the 3rd gen radiator at an angle (like the 4th gens) I'm just trying to get 3in. If I can accomplish a 3in gap, that should be plenty of room to setup something straight to the maf and to the throttle body...in the same fashion and LS1 airlid works...

Re: home made CAI to real CAI

If you have a trans am hood and dont need MAF, you can use a cone filter directly on the tb and follow the "kickass cold air intake" instructions to fabricate the "air channeling shield" from the vents to the filter.

Re: home made CAI to real CAI

yeah, thats my main restriction too... well, there are 2...the use of a MAF and hood clearance from the radiator support, but I'm planning to just use simple pastic, maybe aluminum, tubing. Nothing exotic yet. Now if I get it working great, then I'll look into stuff like fiberglass and etc...

Re: home made CAI to real CAI

Thomas1976,

The first link that you posted above containing the TBI firebird with the unique "ram air setup". Where can a guy get a carb hat like that one? Or at least somthing like it. I hit up EBay all the time and all I can find is used ProCharger hats for $100+.

Perhaps someone could point me in the right direction...

Thanks,
