custom exhaust ideas

Hey all, I wasnt really sure where to post this, but Ill give it a shot I guess. I recently purchased a 92 firebird v6 w 70k original miles on it from a friend of mine and finally had a day to go over there car. Upon going checking the undercarriage of the car I found that there was an after market Dynomax exhaust cat-back on. Well the exhaust tips to the car are starting to look pretty bad and I was looking on ebay at the rectangular style chrome camaro exhaust tips and got an idea. I was wondering if it was possible to mount the exhaust tips side by side centered in the rear bumper. Obviously it would take bending, but I wanted to get advice and ideas. I also had the idea of doing a exhaust tip at the begining of the ground effect behind the door on each side of the car. I figure the car will never be remotely fast, so it might as well look cool. I dunno, let me know what ya think

you want both tailpipe ends to be next to each other centered in the middle? i dunno how thatll look like, i would just leave it alone and get new chrome tips. does your car have headers already?

Re: custom exhaust ideas

The more bends you have in the exhaust the more restrictive it is. To make them bend the way you want with the small space there and then putting on restrictive tips isn't the best idea performance wise even though it may not be that much of a loss. Plus, its probably going to change the sound of the exhaust.

If you had 2 pipes coming over the rear axle like a true dual setup instead of a ypipe setup then it would be more logical but with a v6 it might not sound very good.

Cost is the other issue. Buying a bunch of 45 degree and 90 degree exhaust tubing is going to add up. Then welding supplies/costs. Then the good chrome aftermarket square tips run probably close to $100.

I would say just get some 3" tips that are cut at an angle on the end. Stainless steel also, won't rust near as fast as chrome. Summit racing sells magnaflow s.s. tips.

Re: custom exhaust ideas

Deanj- I’m guessing that you had to cut out some of the steel bumper support, but it also looks like that cutout in the bumper cover is blended in. How did you do that? Do you have any in progress pictures or pictures from underneath?

Re: custom exhaust ideas

Hi guys, Yes I had to cut the bumper support and raise the trunk well also. The bumper cut out is blended. I used various curves and edges from different urethane bumpers. Used 3-M bumper repair and filler to bond and smooth $$$. It took me about 30 hours to complete the job, all custom work. I would have hated to have had to pay me . Tomorrow is car day so I'll get some more pics. Later Dean.

Re: custom exhaust ideas

Hi guys, here are some more pics some of you requested. Should be self explainatory. The tag cutouts shown are from a late model Grand Am, had them laying around . The ones I used in my bumper are from a 91 Geo Storm . Later, Dean

Re: custom exhaust ideas

If the extra bends from the crossflow muffler bothered anybody, they could use a bullet muffler before the rear axle, behind the cat.

That looks like a muffler for an old VW Bug, except for the tips being wider apart...

Re: custom exhaust ideas

if you have the V6 you're right, it won't ever be even close to remotely fast. but if you want it to sound good and look cool, get an estimate on a custom job. i would go all the way back up the exhaust line to the headers or the cats and get rid of it. get rid of the muffler too. then get 2" pipes and then bend them out on the sides of your car, like right in front of the rear wheels. with the pipes being shorter than normal, and without the muffler, you can then get wide tips and it'll have a very deep, mellow sound. if you want to then further the noise production and modify the performance a little more, you could get a cold air intake.
