"Double hump" transmission crossmember

Just got finished with this last night. Had to build a new trans crossmember as I'm putting in Hawk's long tube headers with the rebuild this time. I didn't like the way the Hawk's y-pipe went under the factory crossmember so I made a new one to keep from losing ground clearance.

Made it out of a piece of 1/4" plate and 1"x1" tubing for the actual trans mount plate, the 2 "humps" are cut from 1/4" x 5" angle, and the 2 frame plates are made from 1/4" cold roll steel. Ended up taking a lot longer to make than I expected or planned, but it turned out well.

And the weld on the left, it's just the shadows, it doesn't really look that bad

Similar idea to a g-body double hump crossmember but I've never seen anyone do it for a third gen f-body.

Here's the link. There isn't one listed for third gens

Nice. Good job. Reminds me of the Skulte designd one.

I've been using a similar one built by the member "drews" for quite awhile. Made it really easy to put my LTs in.

Another members mounted up. Don't recall whose car this was though.

Re: "Double hump" transmission crossmember

I like that Skulte design. It puts the angle iron ends pointing upwards away from the pipes but the angle has been flattened out to fit better. I may incorporate that design in my new crossmember. Dual 4" pipes don't leave a lot of room. My pipes currently run under a home made crossmember but I don't like the design and will redo it later this winter when I yank the tranny out.

that's the one I remembered seeing. I couldn't remember who's design it was though. The last one I made was out of 1"x3" rect. tubing like his, but I didn't have any this time around.

Re: "Double hump" transmission crossmember

The one the OP posted doesn't look near as strong as the other ones . Those ones are boxed, although the last one only partially. The first one is just flat stock. I don't know if it's strong enough or not, but it's not as strong as the others.

The only thing I see with the one pictured in post 7 is you loose some ground clearance compared to the others. Otherwise very well made.
