Want your inputs on a new old idea...

sooooo... i think this would be real neat for all ya'll smokers out there like me. any ideas on how to pull this off or how they did back when it came out would be awesome. anyway heres the idea.... so i was watching that mecum's auto auction on TV and i think it was a '56 or '57 impala came up on the block and it had and ashtray with vacuum to it so it sucked up the ash and the smoke... it might be really hard or even impossible to do but i was hoping to design a system like that for my 87 bird.... any ideas on how or if anyone has attempted something similar??

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

one way: and this is totally MacGyvering it

Go to walmart or wherever. Buy a small handheld vacuum cleaner.

hide the base of the machine in the dash somewhere or trunk if you have a long enough hose.

re-wire the switch with long long long wires from the machine and install it into the center console.

install the end of the hose under the ashtray cutting a hole with a circular saw from home depot or sears hardware

use epoxy glue underneath to make sure the hose stays put

machine would be self powered but might have to either recharged or figure out a way to wire it to the car but you will need to find out alot of power specs on the machine

run the hose under the trim/carpet and under the center console.

i think you get the idea

i'm sure theres a more clever way but good luck

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

Use one of those battery-operated "PC" vacuums. I have one I bought at Circuit City (last year) that runs on 4 AA's. Wire it into the car's electrical with some resistors to knock the voltage down from 12V to 6V. Then you'll have to do some cutting and epoxying as mentioned in the last post.

My first instinct would be to use engine vacuum, but I don't see how you could do that without the engine seeing it as a vacuum leak.

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

If you used engine vacuum you would either need a filter that you cleaned out, or you would be sucking whatever went into the hole into your engine vacuum source....the intake manifold.

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

hook it into the exhaust and make it scavenge it. get the angle right and it will pull a vacum effect.

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

I thought about doing a mod like this on a chevy beretta I had in the late 90's... only problem I ran into was the intake of hot materials... I used a 12volt vacuum from wal-mart and placed the vacuum motor in the center console... it worked great for a couple days... to make the story short the vacuum bag caught on fire...

just tossing in my couple cents worth of knowledge...

find a way to have the contents removed from the ashtray placed into a non-flamable container.

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

all great inputs i still dont know where to go with it but more of that exhaust idea has REALLY caught my attention. so any more help with that would be awesome. i mean could you just run a male vacuum end at some point near the collector on my headers and just run a vacuum line to the ashtray and make that work... but yeah that whole angle thing is a mystery to me

Re: Want your inputs on a new old idea...

lol, thats acually for the crankcase evac on race engines. but it might work for your app. id use some pc tower fans and some dryer vent hose in reality. that way you dont have to mess with exhaust seeping into your ride if you screw up the angle.
