I was wondering if anyone has ever done this. I need a new gas tank, and a new carbed sending unit is impossible to find. To put a new stock gas tank and a used sending unit in I'm looking at around $200-250 dollars. I can get a 16 gallon fuel cell for around $130, plus a sending unit.
I understand I would have to cut a hole in the floor to have fill it. I also understand it won't be up to NHRA specs due to it being mounted higher than the top of the tires, but this is my daily driver so I'm not too worried.
Anyone have a link or some pictures of this?

to use a fuel cell you would most likely have to cut into the "cargo" area. Most of the cells would not fit in the stock location with the axle, panhard bars ect. If you really want to do this i would get under the car and measure really well and see what kind of space you have before you start buying things.
The stock fuel tank is very oddly shaped a regular fuel cell wont fit. there is one maid to fit the 4th gens and can be put in 3rd gens but it is very expensive. I have seen a coulpe of peopl find nice size ones to fit verticaly in the rear storage space. The fuel cells they used were designed to be installed upright too. That would probably be the easyest way to get it acomplished. However the gas smell after fill up would make it not worth it to me unless you did it right and put some sort of firewall there.
Not exactly stock, but with new carpeting, it could look stock.
Cut the spare tire well out. Extend the flat area above the axle all the way back with a new metal floor. And now you have all the room in the world for a cell in the "stock" location.
