i personally think the first picture makes it look like your trying to give it a dodge challenger look...just need the round angle eyes and prjectors lol. if you want it to look like the 1st gens then just buy the body kit they make for the 3rd gens that look like the 5th gens. you know there are some poor 3rd gen owners out there thinking man i need a bumper and cant afford it and these guys are cutting them up! save your bumpers there are starving kids in africa!

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

ive done this setup about 6 years ago on my 85 iroc i had. i wish i had pictures of it, but the car got t-boned and was a total loss. on the molded bottom grill. that would cause some major overheating issues.

It wasn't as hard as you would think. Fiberglass kit, touch of bondo and a bit of time and patience.

That is because THAT ONE is a fiberglass replica, not an OEM urethane one. Which is MUCH harder to work with.

?? I started with oem. I'm not a body guy at all, but it wasn't that hard. Hardest part was making the first cut...took some time before I actually got the balls to do it, lol.

Not with those closed turn signal mounts, it isn't OEM urethane.....

Did you not take the lights out & just paint directly over the lenses?

I was looking at your pictures, and I saw how the hood stickes out. What if your on the freeway at high speeds wouldnt the hood fly of, yeah I know the hood hinges are there and everything but after a while hopefully it doesent loosen enough to disconnect. That would be my only concern.

Tony.

Once I find the right hood I'll be using hood pins to keep it secure.

Actually in person it looks far better than the pics. This is not to say that I am not wholly undecided about wether or not to paint the stainless diamond mesh that serves to somewhat protect the radiator. If I were to paint it, I'm not sure if the radiator would stand out so much or not. I'm still working on the small details.

Once you move it out and take some pics in the natural sunlight we can get a better idea. Flash bulbs wash everything out.

Keep up the good work!!!!

Well it is interesting, I have to wonder about messing w/ the front end structure that way, especially at speeds over 75mph, not to mention the toll it will take on the aerodynamics of the vehicle...LOL I hope it works for you...

With all of the fiberglass resin the front actually feels stiffer than what is on my 84. My biggest concern at this point is...Will it all crack apart at higher speeds?. I'll find out in the spring and make adjustments from there.

Sure will, but now I have to get back to the things that will actually make it go down the road,( finish rear end, suspension, interior, last couple things for the a/m swap) the usual. Maybe a hood too. Perhaps a new starter as I just blew the solenoid.

that doesnt look half bad. if it was me, id add a large piece of tinted plexi to the entire front end insted of the louver idea, it would look much more modern.

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

I'm wondering what it would look like with a 1/2" piece across the front just under the hood, and then moved the lights and grill forward to match up with it?

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

This is what you should do w it... make it just like the challenger grille w the camaro emblem on the left and z28 on the right. same mesh and all. only thing that makes me cringe is the look of the lip under the new grille. the original eyelid lip goin all the way across...... might not look good(silver camaro above^^^)
Other than that this looks sick!

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

the front end is to pointy. not sure of the dimensions of an 80's monte carlo front end, or if it could even be used for a thirdgen, but take a look at how they look just like a camaro bumper (well a mushed in version). use this bumper to do your mod on... idk its what came to mind when i saw this...

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

No, just no....

The ledge that will be left there will be too long and just look not very proportionate. The part above the headlights will need to be lengthened to reduce the difference between the top and the ledge or what will likely become a bench to some people.

The only other way to make it look right is to shorten the area below the headlights, a-la the Monte Carlo as suggested above.

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

i dont like it at all. Its not aerodynamic at all. I know the two buckets in the cars now arent aerodynamic but yeah not digging it at all. the setback grille remind me of why they came out with the daytona charger back in 69 because the setback grille on the 68 and 69 dodge chargers caused too much drag

Good question but it would make it rather difficult for me to remove my t-tops lol. It would make it hard to do the doors becasue of the fact that third gens dont have that piece above the window when the door is open. If someone could do it though I would probably buy it.

Re: TTW Third Gen Phantom Grill

makes it sorta look like an elcamino. if you want it all blacked out, why not put on some light covers and paint the middle portion f the nose gloss black along with the headlight buckets
