I finally got the time to go to the salvage yard to pick up a set of projector lenses yesterday, i looked around and found a good bit but i want ones that were a pretty good size, alot of them were pretty small. i finally found this hyundai with ones just the right size, i removed them and went to pay for them, they were 4.99 each. ill be fitting these in the existing camaro headlight squares and will be making some halos to go around them. the halos will be the running lights, the projector lights will be the headlights, and the two outside squares will be the high beams.

are you making the outsides the headlights or the insides? just asking because thats opposite of stock and it would look awkward.....

I did the silverado headlight mod in my car and my projectors have a square piece of metal on the bottom for the cutoff line on the top of the beam that can be something you want to add

What does the projector bowl look like?Or did you only buy the lenses/shrouds?

these didnt really have a bowl like the ones on the bmw, they had a light with a little reflective piece but it wasnt much of a bowl and it wasnt closed in but like i said, this was a hyundai so yea...lol i didnt need one anyway, i removed all of that, im gonna make my own backings and all as soon as i finish making the halos.

The cut off line is the line that seperates or cuts off the light above the hood line or thereabouts.Thats what keep you from blinding oncoming traffic.Other wise your just driving around like you have hi-beams.

Yeah. Without a bowl and cut off sheild, these arent much different than the lights you get with the "projector lens" on ebay. The lens is only part of the story.

Curious as to how you are going to finish off the rear of the light where the bulb goes and all.

i have the cut offs and the wanna be bowl that was connected but i dont think im going to use the ones they came with, probably gonna create something on my own, you say the cut off stops the light from shining above the hood level? and ill be able to do the light assemble once i shape the halos because i have to get those fitted properly before i do anything else. i dont know if i should make the halo slightly inside the chrome bezel around the projector lens or should i outline the bezel with the halo?

maybe so, i dont really care for the ones they have on the market and the bmw conversion is cool but these will fit it very nicely because they use they will screw right in, and i can make them look how i like, plush i have a whole auto yard full of goodies to play with! lol

im liking the idea.. was looking at some new bmw lights today as i was working at the shop and they had the leds on the side like these. was thinking it would be cool if i could some how make them work in my car.. i know there is a bmw light mod.. just not on my todo list right now its big enough.. would u be able to use hids with this light set up ur building?

thanks for the link man, i just wanted to talk about it here because its with my fellow thirdgen members and maybe if i can design some lights that everybody likes or a series of lights, maybe i could start making them for people? who knows but i wanted input from my own kind before i ventured off

I say switch the lowbeams back to where they're supposed to be on the outside and leave the highbeams on the inside. I'm a little skeptical right now because there is quite a bit of science and research that goes into the design of the projectors. It'll be pretty hard to just "create" your own bowl that will perform well. Do you have anything else i.e. Bulbs, ballasts, etc? I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Im very hesitent to post, because I dont exactly know where you are going with your project. Slightly confused as to what you're trying to accomplish here.

Do you have a bowl and a cut off shield? I understand the custom Halo idea, and that looks fine. But I dont know how you plan to handle the actual light.

Without a cut off shield, these are going to be full of glare and downright dangerous (just like the ebay ones) if you put HID bulbs behind them.

Kinda anxious to see the unit mocked up or partially assembled to get the gist of your final product.

I also suggest hidplanet for referencing custom HID/projector builds. Ive been over there for awhile since I bought my projectors and have been toying with them. Great info.

personally i like the headlights in the middle and id have all the halos and leds on the high beams on as the running lamps, yes i will have a cut off shield cuz like you guys stated, there pretty bright! its like scott from xmen running around with his eyes open. ill keep you guys posted

its going fine, ive left theses two alone for the moment to catch up with the high beam set, i used a flood flashlight reflector and 3 leds (5mm) that go in your cars cigerrette lighter thing to give extra light as the 3 leds shown in the picture. it looks pretty cool. once i get it mocked up, ill take more pictures and once im completely done we can talk about who wants some! lol

i did a real HID retrofit and id hate to tell you but from the pics im seeing your missing the most important parts of the projector. You get the lenses.... and the shrouds but you dont have the inner cutoff sheild, the rear projector housing (part that surrounds the HID bulb and where the bulb mounts too) this shroud also houses the cutoff sheild as the sheild is not attached to the lenses.

also im pretty sure that hundai dont have real HID projectors... they are halogen projectors. I know bc i see the cars all the time, same setup as the new ford fusion. The halogen projectors and HID projectors are not the same and the beam pattern/cutoff is not the same. HID projectors have an opening between the lenses and the rear projector housing, halogen projectors are completely sealed.

I hope your build turns out good, just stating that without the correct parts your making ebay projector housings, basically a lense bolted to a housing with no beam pattern control and SHlTTY light output

Well im glad someone gets it. I am in the process of making an HID Projector Super Info Thread right now that will explain alot of what you should know about High intensity discharge systems and retrofitting projectors but i will post this little bit of information from the thread as a sort of "sneak peak"...

"When designing the optics (lens and/or reflector) for a lamp, the characteristics of the light source are the driving factor around which everything else must be engineered. If you go and change the light source, you've done the equivalent of putting on somebody else's eyeglasses: You can probably make them fit on your face OK, but you won't see properly."

"What about the law, what does it have to say on the matter? In virtually every first-world country, HID "retrofits" into halogen headlamps are illegal. They're illegal clear across Europe and in all of the many countries that use European ECE headlight regulations. They're illegal in the US and Canada. Some people dismiss this because North American regulations, in particular, are written in such a manner as to reject a great many genuinely good headlamps. Nevertheless, on the particular count of HID "retrofits" into halogen headlamps, the world's regulators and engineers all say DON'T!
The only safe and legitimate HID retrofit is one that replaces the entire headlamp—that is lens, reflector, bulb...the whole system—with optics designed for HID usage. In the aftermarket, it is possible to get clever with the growing number of available products, such as Hella's modular projectors available in HID or halogen, and fabricate your own brackets and bezels."

If I can, lillee64, please let me advise you to do a bit more research about HID projector systems before you go invent your own. I'm not trying to be nagative, lighting has progressed leaps and bounds and EVERYONE should take advantage of the new technology, however, you must first know what you are trying to accomplish in order to come out with a nice finished product. Even a prototype for yourself.

Are you really making your own bowl/cutoff? Projectors are very sensitive with regard to "focal point" & the bowl design on a large part sorta dictates that.Move the focal point 1/16 in or out & the projector beam will be completely distorted.

Also the cutoff shield cant just be plopped down in the projector.If its too close too the lense, or too far.The cutoff line will out of focus as well.Just 2-3mm is enough to throw off the cutoff completely.

Like has been advised, use the bowl/cutoff that came with the projectors.Even though they look like halogen units.Its the better option.Making your own will probably not have the best results.

agreed. your better off getting a whole projector designed for HIDs. got mine from retrofitsource for 100$ and inlcuded bezels (that i couldnt use lol). and they are bixenon so i have functioning highbeams.

I have the bowls and cut offs so no worries about that lol, but i sold the camaro and now im putting them on my 85 chevy c10 i just got, paying attention to the motor right now so i havent installed them yet

hopefully you got the whole cut off thing sorted cause that is the most important part.. you would be much better off buying a complete projector to retrofit. in the picture are valeo projectors and fit nicely
