clear driving light mod

this is inspired by another thirdgen.org members mod.
I decided to do it and post the pics of the progress.
right now im waiting for the chrome paint to dry, then im going to epoxy the lexan onto the light housing, then spray a ring around the outside to hide the epoxy from the outside.

as soon as i get them back on the car ill post a finished pic.

tools used: Air whizzer, jigsaw, paint and jbweld lol.

didnt notice this until i pulled the protective coating off the lexan, but there are 2 scratches on the right side. oh well, ill do it again when i feel like it, lol.

but now the epoxy is setting and i will post a pic when i put them on tomorrow morning.

stay tuned

Re: clear driving light mod

ok so they aren't high quality by any means, but i like the way they look.

they were as bright as the headlights, so i had to put some 1157LL in place of the 1157's i had before. (or maybe they were 1197's, short memory, lol)

well here is the finished product.
ill take another pic when its light out, an LED flash can only do so much.

let me know what you think.

EDIT; They aren't as bright as in the pic when you have both bulbs in. Also they retain all their stock functions.

Re: clear driving light mod

Looks like you've turned your parking light/turn signals into fog/driving lights. Now other drivers won't know if your turning & it could cause an accident.....Good luck at Inspection time.

1157LL's are dual filament for the blinkers, they are alot dimmer then the ones pictured, i switched them out cause they were as bright if not brighter than the headlights.

Sumter county, Florida has no inspection. never even had a sticker on the cars windows for the entire 21 years of its life. besides, if they weren't going to work like blinkers should work, than i wouldn't have done it

I'm all about not getting hit cause the guy coming the opposite direction cant see my blinker cause it doesnt work, lol.

track car, i wouldnt care, but not on a daily driver.

4 and a half hours total. the longest part was waiting for the paint to dry and the epoxy to set. I'd like to see some 4 and a half hour shipping, rofl

Re: clear driving light mod

Very nice man. Did you remove the lens from the inside? It has the 2 folds in it.

Also I did check ebay.. Its like $30+ for EACH turn signal; why not just do the mod that takes the 4 hours and pay like $10 at most it seems..

Re: clear driving light mod

Man that looks good bro, so I guess you know a lil bit about the light bulbs in the turn signal assemblys.

I started a thread a while ago about how come 4th gen turn signals are brighter than 3rd gens?

Do you have a clue by any chance?

Thanks, Tony.

I think if you look in the 2nd pic in the 1st post i took a pic of the outside lenses and the inside reflectors cut off of the cones. i left them off and just replaced them with the lexan.

And I wanted to get the ones off of ebay, but didnt feel like paying that much, then i remembered the thread on TGO that someone else posted, took mine off and just did it

As far as i know, the 1157LL (Long Life) are dimmer to extend the life of the bulbs. I may be wrong.
To me it would make sense that the insides of the 4th gen turn signals would have lighter plastics/less plastics in them. Possibly the reflectors were more clear. The 3rd gen signals lens clouds from the UV exposure over time, so they would allow less light to pass through. Or they could just have a higher wattage bulb, lol.

Again I may be wrong, but if anyone can confirm/disprove, feel free to post.

Re: clear driving light mod

As you were doing this mod do you think you could actually keep the inside reflectors on so they have more of that stock look? I believe it would look nicer not sure though.

Re: clear driving light mod

im sure you can reuse the original internal reflectors, but you would need to keep the wizzer at a set distance. if you look at the pic with the reflectors in it, you can see that i kinda hit them with the cutoff wheel, but i wasnt planning on keeping them so i didnt care. I think the reflectors also sit up higher than the ledge that i epoxied the lexan to, so it would probably take a little more work than the way i did it.

Re: clear driving light mod

My budy Jose had been throwing this idea at me for the longest on making the turn signals into forglights. And adding a bulb in the inside for the turn signals them selfs.

Tony.
just use the 1157 bulbs, they have the dual filament. would make it easier then creating separate wiring just for the blinkers. i mean, you could tie in and use the side markers as your blinkers, but those are also dual filament.

find bright 1157's instead of 2 different bulbs.

if you do do it, let me know how it goes, and ask any questions you may have on the process

Re: clear driving light mod

I want to install some covers over my headlights this year and paint them black. That way I can ditch the factory headlights. Even though I'm using plastic headlights, they still add weight. I was thinking about just mounting some small driving lights where the factory fog lights normally sit but there's nothing behind the nose of my car to support them.

Converting the signal lights into some sort of driving light would be a good idea. I only need them for those late night trips down the track. We have no track lighting at the far end of the track and I need something to show me where the pavement is. Even mounting a driving light in the signal light opening would work.

Well with the removal of the clouded lens and reflector, I sprayed the original chrome lining with primer then chrome paint cause it was kinda faded. Although they aren't as bright as the headlights with the bulbs i put in, they are still significantly brighter than the old lenses. Plus I'm quite sure that you can find a brighter set of single filament bulbs that can serve your purpose.

Those corner light look good on the car. I seen my friends put their grille more in toward the radiato, but it looks good overall.

Re: clear driving light mod

i was looking at doing the expanded metal inside the grille, but just about everyone has done it that way. Another member did the same on the outside except he used the metal with round holes in it and put an emblem on the one side of it and i thought it looked sharp.

Thinking about shaving the emblem off of the front bumper and putting it on the grille, but not quite sure yet. Maybe I'll just get Camaro on it instead, cause it already has the chevy emblem on the grille.

I recently got pulled over, and the cop put 2DR chevy on the ticket, He didnt even know it was a camaro.

I wonder if any young person in a camaro or other muscle car, has ever fought a ticket because he got pulled over for being "A young kid in a muscle car". Sounds like profiling to me when there were 2 people passing me in granny cars.....Yet I still got the ticket.....

Re: clear driving light mod

or what you could is make a stencil from the word camaro and cut it out on some hard paper and spray pait it on the grille that would look nice. Just like how they do it on the intercoolers.

Well I started out with a large piece of expanded metal and bent it to fit, but I didn't completely form it right away. I finished up the grille insert itself, then primed and painted both, let dry and put it together.

Best way to do it is to make a couple of tabs all the way around except for the bottom, two tabs should do fine there. The reason I say this is because even if you tape the GFX on the front and around the opening, It will still scratch the hell out of it.

Probably be easier in the long run to take the front GFX off, Time consuming but no scratched paint.

Currently on mine the top is held by a couple zip ties till i make a better mount, and the bottom is tight enough only a couple tabs holding it in place. Did over 110mph and it didn't move at all.

Anyone think sticky tape would work?
Maybe some JBWeld.
I'll post the other pics of the grille when i find them.
