I have a power bulge hood, someone made a Formuls clone out of my firebird. Hate the powerbulge. Ugliest hood that ever graced a firebird.

By the vin, it is a base model 87 Firebird. It has the performance suspension package which was standard on Formulas and not an option on Firebirds. It has the bulge hood which was on formulas and formula rims. It also has the 86 third brakelight on the back hatch. The 87 have the brakelight on the spoiler. The car was built 12/86, so it was proably parts they had left over. 12/86 was an exciting time. Second divorce and reported to RAF Lakenheath 12/15/86. I had been singe 10 days.

Actually in 1987 there is no difference between the Vin of a Formula and a vin of a LG4 Firebird, there is nothing in the VIN to distinguish a Formula for a Firebird in this case. If you had the LB9 or L98 engine then you could distinguish it because the base Frirebird trim did not get either of those engines.

The 16" wheels were also from 85, 86 & 87 as an option or part of the WS6 package on Trans Am's.
It sounds like the hatch was replaced, does your car have the wrap around aero spoiler? If it does it sounds like its a Formula. The 85 & 86 spoilers had a texture, similar to the dash pad, and the 87-90 were smooth & painted body color.

THat does happen, but in this case it is kind of late in the year for it to be happening. Typically options & items that cross-link years are within a month of the new production model year.

The car does not have the wrap around spoiler, it is smoth and painted the color of the car. Today while looking at hood (buldge hood) noticed the Vin was on the hood, so it is original hood.It list motor as H1G5.0V4NTA47B4H-1C. I have no idea what that is. Does have upgraded suspension and 16' wheels. Maybe it is a formula with a standard Firebird hatch. But the Buldge Hood DEFFINETLY came with the car.

when I got my 89 TA, it had the exact same hood setup, except among other stupidities, the previous owner put the scoop on crooked and failed on putting in 2 sets of hoodpins . I'm still trying to fix the hood up right. that is my favorite setup though (when done properly!).

I have a powerbuldge hood in ottawa. Really hate it, so if someone wants to trade for a plain jane hood + a bit of cash, or a trans am ram air hood, id love to trade. Or even a cowl hood, and ill give you some cash.

thanks man.. would be nice if it was a little lighter though.. and i wish i could make fit more air filter in there, a 4" element would be great instead of the 3" element&lid.. and yes, no arguing with FREE!!

A cowl similar to yours, but starting from the front of the hood, and matching the contour of the bumper closer, with the nostrils would be simply amazing.

Re: Best Firebird hood choices......

I bought my 4166 aero scoop used and i got it for $25 and cut it down far as I could, bolted it on to a stock hood I was given. I have about $30 into it. I prefer the cowl hoods. But this was purpose built in the end It turned out looking pretty good, just waiting to paint it when I paint the car over the winter. I was really afaid I was not going to like it but I am happy and think it turned out looking pretty good.

Why oh why does someone have to bring up the gawd aweful Daytona hood in every freakin hood thread. That is the ugliest hood ever made for a thirdgen and they just need to burn the molds so it will go away.

i just find that the asymetrical hoods that the formula firebirds rolled off the factory line with are the best looking hoods on any car. it gives the car a unique look without having to go the ***** route and make the ride look like every old nissan stanza out there with a 4 banger and a wooden spoiler bolted on the trunk with lag bolts...

Check out the "thirdgen ranch", one of the sponsors here on the site. They've got all kinds of stuff like that and I do believe I saw the aircleaner assembly on their web-site. Worth taking a look at anyway.

Re: Best Firebird hood choices......

I miss the power bulge hood my '84 t/a had, Id gladly trade my t/a vent hood for one without even a second thought. To each his own I guess.

Excluding the power bulge hood, I honostly can't think of a firebird hood Ive been too fond of, aftermarket or stock.
